Taking a non family member child across the border?

Hi there I am planning to take a 14 yo on our trip with us. Does any one know what documentation I will need ?

You would require a letter from the child's parents permission to take the child across the border. You should also include in the giving you permission to make any medical decisions in case of accidents. It would be better if you got the letter notarized.

Make sure you have something notarized from BOTH parents. My friend and I (both single moms) took our kids on a cruise to the Bahama's this summer. Several times they asked for documentation from both of us that we had permission from the child's other parent to cross the border -- she brought a notarized letter from her daughter's dad, I brought the adoption decree that lists me as DS's sole parent. When my mother took us to Australia as teenagers, the embassy wanted to see my father's death certificate before issueing visas.

I travel solo with the kids often and have never had a problem as long as I had documentation. Plus, in your case the child is old enough to speak for him/her self. Have a great trip.
