Taking a GPS on the plane

We are renting a car when we arrive and I was wondering what is the procedure for taking our GPS on the plane. It will be in our carryon. Does the xray machine damage it>?

I took a portable GPS on the plane last month. There was no damage and there was no problem with it going through the scanners. It was in my carry on bag. (We went from CHI Midway to Kansas City on SW -- we also took it to Orlando 2 years ago -- no problems):)

It definately made getting from the airport to the hotel at 9pm a LOT easier!!

X-ray machines will not damage your electronics. They are only a problem for film.

Some airlines allow use of a GPS while in flight, others don't. Check the back of the on-board magazine.

I travel a lot for my job and I always take my Garmin GPS. It's in my carry-on luggage. Never have any questions asked about it and no damage to the unit.

I brought my Garmin unit on a plane last year and turned it on to see what would happen. It was not able to keep up with the changing routes and eventually shut down, but my average speed and maximum speed were great, over 450 mph for max speed. My average speed eventually made it down to less than 150 mph after the trip.

I have flown United, American, Sun Country, Delta, and Continental in the last few years and there was no problem taking it on the plane, BUT, none of those airlines allowed it for use on the plane. They all announce that GPS type equipment cannot be used at all in flight.

FWIW, here is a site that lists airlines that approve and disapprove of the use of GPS devices in flight. ALL will let you bring one on board.

Not to hijack the thread, but for those of you who've taken your GPS units to Orlando, do you find that the pre-programmed directions are pretty accurate? I have a Garmin and have done a little experimenting w/ it and know that it has automatic directions for Magic Kingdom and all the other Disney Parks, but it would help my peace of mind to know that other people have had good results.

Thanks!

I'm very familiar with all the roads on WDW property since we go so frequently. When I first got my Nuvi I brought it along just to see how well it works. The answer was - very well! They do indeed have all the roads and their routing from one spot to another is good too.

As of June 2007, GPS use was permitted on Continental but forbidden on Southwest.

The auto-routing on my Garmin 60CS(Mapsource City Select) was good on WDW property and to and from the property.

I didn't have any problems using a Garmin on a plane. You have to change the scale on the map, the easiest thing is just change the scale so it shows both your originating and destination airports. The unit doesn't have the speed, nor do you need, to have the local roads displayed as you fly over.

Some of the older units need a better line of site to the satellites then the newer units.

I have had no problems with my GPS60C. I have taken it on the plane and used it on the plane with no problem. Haven't used the routing function since we use ME, didn't see the point but have never had a problem with it anywhere else.

I just keep it in the camera bag for Geocaching while there. Well, Really locationless terracaching. www.terracaching.com.
