I am getting married on August 2nd of this year but we are not taking our honeymoon until October 17th. We are going to WDW and on a DCL cruise. We may not book our airfare until right after the wedding so we do not have to worry about the name on the plane tickets at this moment unless we decide to book our air earlier than that. I would have about 10 weeks do get my name changed and order a new passport. Do you think I should change my name before the honeymoon? And if yes do think I should pay the extra $60 to have it expedited. Regular will probably take 4-6 weeks and expedited 2 weeks. I would really appreciate any advice or to know if anyone else has made this type of decision before and what you did. I included a poll as well on this.

I was thinking about the same kind of thing as you. I am getting married next year, and was looking into name change stuff, and figured it was for the best to wait. For me this was for 2 reasons

1) I am Canadian, and getting married in Florida, so I NEED a passport. If the passport doesn't match with my current last name, there may be some issues. I would think if you are American and going to WDW you wouldn't have to worry as much about a name change on identification (I know in Canada if we are flying within the country, they aren't too bad on identification, I'm not sure about the US since I fly as an "outsider".

2) We want to go to Europe prob 6 months after, but even with that, I just don't trust everything to go through quickly.

Anyway, that is my advice! I just would rather be "safe than sorry". Good luck with whatever you choose!

Just be aware that for some name changes that you may have to do including car registration and driver's license with your new married last name you may need to provide your marriage license. My daughter just had to do this in the state of Maryland when she moved there from Florida. She had to show her marriage license to prove that she had changed her last name, also when she applied for a new social security card and probably again whenever she has to use her passport.

I think my nervousness of doing the name change and getting a new passport before the honeymoon stems from the fact that I need to send in my current passport. Although if expediting I think should have plenty of time as long as I get the name change stuff done quickly right?

I vote for waiting just b/c that what im doing. Like someone else said you will need the original marriage licence for almost everything to change your name. So figure by the time you get home and change your name on things it will probly be a cuple of weeks. Then you send in for your passport. To me it was not worth the $60 and I had longer between the wedding adn honeymoon. I dont want to stress the weeks leading up to the honeymoon because my passport has not arrived yet! Ill change it when I get back when I dont need the passport for a while.

That's good point about stressing over it before the honeymoon - maybe I will wait - I think maybe it will take time and enjoyment away from planning the honeymoon. I am anxious to change my name and get it done with but I may just be better off to wait and avoid the headache before hand.

BTW - your wedding picks are beautiful!
