can you make a tag or does the tag fairy make them if i can make my own i need to know how and how come mine says mouseketeer

You can make your own tag by clicking on "User CP" and then "Edit Profile". Mousketeer is a default tag that corresponds to the number of posts you have made. This title changes as your post total goes up.

Only the Tag Fairy can color your tag, any tag you make will show up in black. If you edit your tag AFTER a visit from the Tag Fairy you lose your colors, so be careful!

LoriR, your tag is a perfect illustration of what has been puzzling me for a while.

Under our control panel, we have the option to have either the default tag or our own custom tag. Not both. I have tried changing mine to a custom tag with "Mouseketeer" on the first line and and the other words below that, but I can't manage to separate them no matter what I do. So how do some members manage to have both? Or is this a moderator-only option?

Which leads me to my other question: If we leave our tag set to the default, and the Tag Fairy decides to visit, are words simply added below it, or do we have to lose our "rank" in order to receive a tag?

My tag is the work of the Tag Fairy. I had never added a custom tag and only had the default "Mouseketeer" listed when I was tagged. No, not a moderator option, a Tag Fairy only option.

I am frozen in time as a Mouseketeer! I shall never reach the DIS Veteren status! ( but that's OK, I love being a Mousketeer)

You would not "lose" your rank receiving a tag, but your rank would stay listed at whatever it was when you were tagged. I guess many do not have a ranking listed since they had added their own custom tag before a lucky Tag Fairy visit.
