Tacky or nice? Christmas gift thought...

So we did the Peru ABD this year. We got some really amazing pictures of the breathtaking scenery: Macchu Pichu, other mountains, glaciers, salt flats.

Then this weekend we were strolling through some art galleries and saw some very lovely framed photos for sale of.....scenes of mountains and glaciers.

Which got us thinking, perhaps we could print and frame a couple of our nicer shots as Christmas gifts. I mean, if someone would buy a mountain scene to hang in their house, why wouldn't someone want to receive that as a gift.

But then, I've had second thoughts that maybe this is tacky. Or at least, that art is too personal to give as a gift, and "art" that is really a picture from my vacation may not be a good gift at all.

Soooooo, whaddaya think? Would you like to receive something like that or not?

not lovin' it - I wouldn't want to hang someone else's great memory in my home. Sorry.

Unless it is for your mom/dad/grandma and you are in the picture, then I have to say I think it is a bad idea.

However....

I have a friend who travels extensively. They don't have children, so they print pics from one of their travels to use as their Christmas cards. I think that's way cool. I enjoy receiving a card with a pic of them in Egypt, for example, as much as I enjoy receiving a card with a pic of somebody's kids. Just another idea.

Sometimes photos like that are more meaningful to the person who has the experiences behind what's in the photos. While I'm sure the scenery in Peru is breathtaking, it might be moreso to you since you have the memories to go along with them. KWIM?

I think it's a horrible idea, sorry. Nice thinking though!

To the PP, I had that EXACT same idea to use some pics from Disneyworld for our Christmas cards...find a nice print and make a card out of it! DH said no, it would be braggy and it wouldn't be very nice. Ugh. I gave in (pick and choose your battle type of thing) so we did the same old, same old, everyone put on your formalwear and let's take a pic in front of the white background in the portrait studio. Ugh.

This year tell your DH that any Christmas pictures are braggy when you really think about it. ;) Sounds like my DH!

If you mean family, I think it is a great idea. My son, who also traveled to Peru and lived in Hawaii for three months, took some breathtaking pictures. He blew some up, matted and framed them. He let us and his brother and sister choose which ones we wanted. Maybe it's because I'm his Mom but I thought it was a great gift! People have commented on his pictures I have displayed and I think its cool that I know the photographer!

Tacky! I would never choose artwork for someone. Everyone's taste vary so something you might like, someone else might not. For instance, my brother framed me some artistic cards that a friend made. He thought it was a great Christmas present. I on the otherhand am stuck with a piece of "art" that doesn't got with anything in my house. The cards are beautiful, just not my thing.

Make a Christmas card out of one or two.

Never buy art for anyone (or make it, unless you are under the age of 10). Art is not only personal, but even little things like frames, size, etc. can make or break it as a gift.

I say this as someone who has a picture that lives behind the couch until the giver comes over to visit.

I actually did do this one year - I had some great shots I took of the sunset in Ft Myers Beach and I had them enlarged. I decorated the frame with beach sand and shells from Ft Myers Beach. I made these as gifts for my mom, my sister and my best friend (I knew they all had and enjoyed beach themed decor) My friend even had me make a few for her to give as gifts.

I do think though that it depends on who you plan on giving it to and if you know if it will fit in with their tastes.

Thanks, ya'll. I was thinking "tacky" and you confirmed it. I won't waste time with it.

We did do our Christmas cards with a pic of the three of us at MP- but it looks like a green screen shot, the air was so clear! Oh well.

Not loving the idea. Not even for family.

If you are in the photo & use it for holiday cards, then I'm ok with it.
