So I messaged back and forth with a TA a few months ago before I realized they make most of their commission with on-property trips. I have gift cards to pay for our park tix, and am happy to buy thru this TA if she will get some money since I already chatted with her. However, if I need to upgrade the tix to hopper or want to add a day, can I still do that on my own? Maybe I’m overthinking this, but seems like it would be simpler to purchase directly. Would appreciate any input on this.

The TA would get a commission on the ticket sale. You, personally, would have the ability to modify those tickets should you want to add a day or add the PH option. Unlike resort reservations, the TA does not "own" ticket reservations, so, once purchased, those tickets are yours and the ability to modify belongs to you as well.

Like Marthasor said, you can use the TA for your tickets and then add parkhopping/extra days through Disney on your own. You can use your gift cards with the TA too. I would use the TA. They only get paid through sales and if you used her for some information in the past it would be a wonderful gesture to purchase your tickets through her.

Do TA's actually get a discount on ticket prices?

Not sure what you are asking? TAs can’t sell the tickets for less but they will get a small commission on the sale of the tickets depending on the length and type of ticket. They themselves may be eligible for a free ticket for them only but that benefit has been suspended due to pandemic. Even for those TAs that are booking trips.
Personally if you used the TA for help I would give her the courtesy of buying through her. TAs do a lot of work for people and never get paid. Just my opinion!! It’s nice you are even considering her in this situation.

A TA will only make commission on ticket sales of 3 days or higher. Their prices will be the exact same as through the direct Disney site. You can upgrade to a hopper or add days once you get to the parks through Guest Services. If you meet that 3 day requirement feel free to help out a small business!

That changed as of July 9, 2020. TA's now make commission on ticket sales of 1 day or more, so anything OP is purchasing will help the TA.
