Travel and Lesiure has an article today saying to stay away from whirlpool tubs. the pipes in side the tub lead to rashes and urine (sp?) infections.

it goes on to say that the pipes must be flushed bleach and then run clean water and then wipe the tub and drain down.

I wonder if the writer has been on these boards????????

The best part about the hot tubs at the resorts, is they look neat & fancy.
I've tried it once, briefly, but really have other things I would rather be doing.

For that matter, the whole thought of a community bath tub sorta grosses me right out the door.

Disney has a person who take water and runs some tests at least twice a week on their water - both the hot tub and pool water.

I have seem him. Of course I am assuming this person works for Disney - who knows.

He was there early like 6am. great walking time.

Okay this was only at VWL - but OKW and BWV I don't walk near on my early morning walks.

I think canda is talking about the jacuzzi tubs in the villas...right?

I think this must be the article in question: Whirlpool Germs

I'll file this as one more thing not to obsess about. It's actually quite a long list. ;)

Just saw the article but you beat me to posting. . . And I was looking SO forward to our first trip home and the jetted tub in our 2BR villa!! :sad2:

If you really want to use the whirlpool tub just take (or purchase beforehand) about 1 cup of bleach and some Clorox wipes with you.

We have a whirlpool tub at home and they aren't that hard to clean. You can just wipe the tub out with the Clorox wipe and let it air dry. Then fill the tub up with warm water to about 2" above the jets and add 1/2 to 1 cup bleach to the water. Run the jets for about 10 minutes to let everything flow through the system (you will know right away if they are clean or not, believe me). Then drain the tub, fill it back up with fresh, cold water and run another 10 minutes to flush everything out. This should clean everything out and disinfect it at the same time.

Hope it helps :)

okay do the same I add a little detergent (to help clean it) and I do the wipe down after cleaning it.

I'm right there with ya. DH always wants to go to the hot tub on vacation..ugggh..Just sitting there in a what really is just a hot bath with a bunch of heavy set men ewwwwwww.

Maybe he's expecting a bunch of bikini clad models to jump in  ..but I don't think thats real world. :rotfl2:

They say the home toothbrush has more germs on it than the home toilet. Also the shopping cart handle has more germs than the public rest room. Gotta build resistance somehow. :rotfl2:

It can happen! I've seen it in plenty of movies...

Seriously though, a couple glugs of bleach, run it, drain it and you're good to go. When bleach (diluted or not) evaporates it leaves no residue so there's really nothing to rinse.

I travel a bit for work and if I started worrying about all this I would go nuts. How many would take a black light to look at the pillow? I'd rather go to sleep believing everything in Disney is just brand new, perfect and magical...

I agree ! :cool1:

Didn't someone once suggest taking one of those dishwasher machine tablets and dropping that in the tub, fill with water and run for a while?

Sounds easy enough to me -- and I don't have to check a bottle of bleach in my luggage!!

Anyone ever try that?

I hate to be a downer on this, but I feel the true need to be a bit serious about this. If you have a child who has ever had even ONE UTI, then please do not ever let that kiddo in a hot tub.

My 4 yo princess is about to lose her left kidney later next month (we are going to WDW first so that we are all in a happy place before entering a difficult time).

Now, I am not saying that her going in a hot tub caused her to suffer kidney damage...however, due to her condition I have done a ton of research and am very well schooled in the the perils of uti's, kidneys, hot tubs, and all of these issues. So please, the hot tubs say "not for kids under 17" for a lot of reasons. Protecting your kids' urinary system is one of them.

Peace.

3DisneyKids, so sorry to hear about your DD. I wish her a very speedy recovery.

AS to your first paragraph...you do need to run a rinse cycle to get the bleach water out of the pipes, because the pipes do hold some residue water. It's why there is a need for bleach in the first place.

As to your second paragraph...I totally agree!

Also, for those who don't want to mess with bleach... Automatic dishwasher detergent has lots of bleach in it, and will serve the same purpose. That's already in your unit, so no need to haul bleach along or buy it there.

3DisneyKids,

Prayers and pixie dustpixiedust: for your DD. UTIs are terribly painful and can be very serious. I hope your family has a wonderful time at Disney and that all goes well with your DD. She'll be in my prayers.:grouphug:
