I remember the post about this....and it just happened to me!!!! Yesterday...I was just sitting by the computer watching TV and it started "system restore".....it ended up restoring me back a long time ago!!! I lost alot of stuff....thought I lost my whole hard drive....but didn't...it wouldn't reboot right away and finally I did and then spent 2 hours on the phone with Comcast trying to get "connected"....the guy was GREAT!!.....Figured out that my Winsock files were corrupted????? Anyway he ended up walking me through everything to fix this....backing up reg...moving and replacing system files....something he really wasn't suppose to do since it wasn't a "comcast" issue.....I plan to put a good word in for him (but of course, not mention what he did)..he even gave me his ext and hours and told me to call with anymore problems.....

He had no explanation of why it started a restore by itself either...I was wondering if anyone had an idea?????

My computer is still bad.....I ended up trying to install my panda virus thing and had to restart...and it did a restore AGAIN!!!! When I was with the comcast guy on the phone...we must have restarted AT LEAST 10 time just fine......so....this afternoon I played around with stuff and am online again...but I am sure not for long.

Tomorrow we are going to go check out getting a new computer...we really can't afford it BUT I can't be without one...just those few hours last night I was going crazy!!!!!

can you do a clean install(reformatt the hard drive)?

this sounds like a virus to me.

What other virus program do you have besides panda?

My computer has been on its way out the door for a long time now....not worth doing anything to really.....350mhz.....with win98....it is about time for a new one....the tower itself is HUGE!!!! LOL!!!!

That is the only virus program I am running.....have had no problems running it either....

I was thinking it was some kind of virus that panda didn't catch too....

I think I want to check out a laptop while I am at it too....LOL....although DH says no....

As I just sat near it....it went to "restart" on its own and during it....the screen turned blue and on the bottom it said "system restoring" or "restoring system".....one of those....there was not option to stop it or anything...

Ok, sorry - as a geek that has had to work with problems like this, I agree with the poster earlier - Windows98 does not have a 'restore' capability. I am not sure what it was doing, but my first thought is also virus. I'd make sure I had a recent backup of important files and wipe it clean and reinstall.

that sure does sound like a worm(virus) :badpc:

Good Luck with you new computer, hope you can talk DH into a LT! I would love one!

I wonder why Panda didn't "catch" it then??? I run the virus program every night....as well as spyware every other day....

I was thinking about wiping everything out and just starting new and giving this one to the kids....I REALLY REALLY want a new computer!!!!

I really don't have much to "save" on here....except for email I think.....

And another question.....how exactly to I back everything up.....like I don't think I want to back up the whole c-drive if there is a problem with it...???

email is stored at you ISP

you should do a clean reformat do you have your disk that came with your computer?

Thats the whole problem...I don't have the win 98 disk...the person who put it in for me did copy it to my hard drive...thats how the comcast guy and I were able to do whatever it was we did to the registry....

Once I get my new computer....and what ever it comes with...probably xp.....can I use that on this one too?? Or can you only use it on one computer???

Well, can't I just copy my email stuff on a cd?? or can comcast send me everything???

the disk that comes with a computer will only work on that computer.

Will this guy reformatt for you?

He probably will...he is REALLY smart when it comes to computers....it's actually his job...but I won't call him until absolutely necessary....he is, to put it bluntly....usually wasted all the time and drives you nuts to be around...but even so....he still knows EXACTLY what he's doing...and when he comes over to fix problems I may have...he never wants to leave!!! Last time (a couple years ago) he stayed 2 days!!! But he really can be a nice guy......Once I get my new one I will probably give him a call...

Whoa! Be careful there... email is generally not stored at your ISP, if you use outlook or outlook express it is stored on your computer and if you don't back it up first you will lose it.

Been there, done that, found out after the fact.

I hope you get it all figured out and don't lose much in the process! Good luck!

mine is stored on my ISP just thought that was the case with most peoples.

Not too many emails I would not care to lose anyway most are spam.

My husband came home the other day, and he looked at our laptop and he said, there was a message about the computer restoring. It has to be a virus or a worm, we lost all our stored pictures and files. The laptop will not allow us to store any files or change any settings. When you turn the laptop on, it goes back to the beginning like the day we bought the lap top.

My daughter is home from college this week and she is able to pick up charter wireless and her computer is fending off virus's and worms constantly. She said Charter really sucks. She turned off her computer at our house, she is afraid she will end up needing a new mother-board.

Just now.....I went to move my mouse and the computer restarted on it's own again....started right back up...but still.....VERY STRANGE

I had to replace the hard drive then the cdr went bad the second I formatted the new hard drive. That computer still gives me problems.

I hate these guys who do this crap they should lock em away.

Ok, I am a geek. Two Questions

1. How did 98 restore its self?

2. Why are you still on 98?
