The mom of by Best Friend's MIL passed away and I am sending a sympathy card to the family. I do know the MIL and FIL and my BF and her DH and kids live at the in-laws house right now and I have stayed there when I have visited.

My question is how should I address the inside of the card (it is for the whole family)

Dear XXXX family,
To the XXXX family,
XXXX (just the last name),
or should I write out each persons first name

I am thinking the first one, but it seems a little impersonal, but the last one seems like a bit much since the card is for the whole family and there would be 7 names to write out.

My MIL recently passed away, so we've gotten a bunch of sympathy cards. (As an aside, I will never again underestimate their value!) All of them appreciated tremendously, but the ones that had each of the names written out did seem more personal to me. (There were 5 names folks wrote out as many did not have BIL's address to send a card to.)

Another option some used was "To MIL's-first-name's family..." That was nice too as we shared the cards with her brother and cousins.

I would write your best friends name and family.

If you think you might accidentally leave someone off, put down To the Family of (deceased).

If you know absolutley everyone, then put down their names.
