Does anyone have this problem? Every once in a while one lip swells up and I can't find out why. The only similarities are it's in the morning and right after I've eaten something. But it's always different food. After I take an allergy pill it stops the swelling from getting worse, but it takes overnight to completely get back to normal.

I have had that happen before, usually if my lips came in contact with citrus pulp. It's never taken overnight to go away though. I do have a slight citrus allergy so I've always just assumed that's what caused it. A Benadryl fixes mine in a couple of hours.

It's probably some kind of allergy. Could be anything from a food to a drink to the nail polish or make-up you wear.

My lips swell up after taking Motrin, Aspirin and most other NSAIDS--which is why I can't take them.

I suggest that each time it happens, write down what you've had to eat or drink before you swell up.

It's odd that it takes so long for the swelling to go down though....

Allergy, most likely fruit allergy (at least for me). Whenever I ate banana or water melon, my lip swell up. Just drink alot of water after that.
I used to not have that, but these couple of years, it's getting worse and worse.

Banana could mean you have a latex allergy. Not sure about the watermelon though. It's mostly water.

LOL! Jason, you need to stop watching Anna Nicole. She's shooting ideas in that sexy head of yours.;)

I agree that it sounds like an allergy. I'd probably try to figure out what's causing it. It could be a mild allergy your whole life, but allergies can get worse very quickly.

Thank you all for your advice. What I can't understand is that I've been drinking orange juice every day since I was a child. I'm 57 now. Would it suddenly start to cause me problems? I don't wear makeup except for St Ives collegen and elastin moisturizer that I've used for years also. I haven't taken any asperin, ibuprofen or anything like that when this happens. I've gone online to a site that has lots of people with the same problem. THey also mention citrus and ibuprofen. They have gone to doctors, had tons of allergy tests done and no one can come up with an answer, other than taking allergy medicine. I eat the same food I've eaten for years also. Maybe I'm just getting to be an old lady. LOL

Jason you are a baaaaad boy! LOL

People can develop allergies to things that previously didn't bother them.
I agree that it sounds like a food allergy. My friend gets that from eating peppers.

I'm going to have to keep a log of everything I eat when this happens. That will be the only way I can find out what is causing it.

i nad allergy test and was only allergic to dustmites but i sneeze constantly if i don't take my allergy pill, also allergic to pineapple which is also a latex trigger allergy, so when i go to dr. i tell them i have latex allergy and sta away from all latex. keep a journal it could be an additive sulfites are most common trigger if it is a additive

I"ve had this happen a few too many times. I never know exactly what causes it. ??
Jason, deary, there is a difference between a swollen lip and a cold sore. :)

Angel, I've found that keeping lipgloss on and taking mega doses of Benadryl and tons of ice, helps it go down.

About a year ago I went camping and for some reason this happens to me. It got bigger than I ever thought a lip could get. I thought it was going to bust. When I walked it looked like this :Pinkbounc . Isn't that embarrassing. lol
My kids were laughing at me, I thought I was going to die of embarrassment in front of all those relatives I really didn't know very well.

I was only taking two Benedryl. Maybe that's why it took so long to go down. Thanks Serena, I'll try four at a time next time.

disclaimer: Angel, I'm not a doctor so I cannot recommend taking four,

but two doesn't cut it for me either. LOL

understand Serena. But I think it's a good idea. I will try anything to stop looking like I was in a fight with Mike Tyson. LOL

I second that "do not take more than 2 benedryl at a time". I had LOTS of allergies develop very quickly the first of this year, and when 2 benedryl weren't working, the nurse at the allergist said DO NOT take more than 2. And yes, you can develop sudden allergies to food you've eaten for years.

I have a friend with this same problem, and it is called "oral allergy syndrome". Her particular problem is eating raw fruit or vegetables. She can't drink apple juice, or eat an apple, but apple pie is okay. Anything baked is okay.

If you can do an internet search, there is alot of info out there. If you look at cross-reactivity, you'll find "families" of food, so you'll know more what to avoid.

OK Milo. Back to just 2. I will do some more research on food families. I will get to the bottom of this somehow.
