We are new DVC owners at Boardwalk! :) We are looking to book our first trip at the 11 month window for May 2016 in June of this year. We will be a family of four (we'll have a 3.5 year old a 7 month old - currently gestating). We may be bringing my parents, in which case a 2 bedroom would be ideal, but I think we can get by easily on a 1 bedroom if it is just the four of us.

I want to book a standard view because the points are so much lower, but I was curious if I would have the flexibility to book a 2 bedroom then change to a 1 bedroom later on, assuming more than 60 days out? Or would I have to cancel and then probably only be able to rebook a preferred view 1 bedroom? I know 2 bedrooms in general are harder to book than 1 bedrooms which is why I was planning on booking that initially.

Thanks for any insight.

thanks. could I potentially make two reservations (a 1bdrm and a 2 bdrm) and then cancel one later? I realize that may be frowned upon but just curious if that was technically possible.

Yes, if you have enough points for both reservations.

Booking two rooms would be the way to go as long as you don't have to borrow points. And keep track of the date you have to cancel so the points don't into holding.

Couldn't you just book a 1 bedroom and a studio and cancel the studio if you don't need it. It wouldn't be lock off but is that essential?

1) it might cost more to book a studio + 1BR than to book a 2BR
2) you might be a long way from the other room

thanks for the advice! It is only 10 points more to do a studio + one bedroom rather than a 2 bedroom so I think that's what we will do. We can always give my parents the baby's magic band to get into our room if needed. Being far away wouldn't be a huge deal vs the benefit. I really think we just want to do a vacation without them but we may change our minds once the baby gets here! :)

That's certainly an option for them to consider. However, it does cost a few more points and there is no guarantee that they will be assigned anywhere near each other. So if those factors are important to them, that won't be the better option.

If it were me and I had enough points to do so without borrowing, I'd book a 1 bedroom and a 2 bedroom. I'd make sure I cancelled the one I don't need before my banking deadline (if I didn't plan to use the points before the end of my use year) and at least 31 days prior to arrival, whichever deadline came first.
