I just found out my DB was diagnosed with Diabetes. While my Grandparents had this, neither of my parents have any problem. It is probably that generation skipping rule or something. Well this has created some concerns for my future health.
A recent trip to a nutritionist indicated that I do show signs of early insulin resistance (aka prediabetes) - nothing that diet would not change. We are going to try me on the South Beach Diet. This will retrain me to eat those carbs that do not convert to sugar so quickly. I know that there has been some discussion recently on this diet, but here is how it goes.
The first two weeks are very restrictive - only those carb with a super low glutemic level are allowed. (glutemic level tells how quickly they convert to sugar). These carbs are usually in vegetables like brocolli, caulifower. This is to stabilize my sugar after living with the "peak" and "valley" lifestyle of the past.
After two weeks you slowly add back complex carb. Each week I will add one or two complex carbs to my daily total. Eventually the nutritionist and I will determine what carb level works best for me.
While it starts out low carb, it is not a low carb diet - nor is it a low fat diet. It is a moderation diet. The nutritionist is very postitive that this diet will re-teach me how to balance carbs, protein and fat.
Today is day 2 - the headaches from stabilizing my sugar are slowly subsiding. Maybe tomorrow, I will be able to function better.

You are doing the BEST thing you could ever do for your health, heading off something before it gets big enough to become a problem. Good for you!!!
