I have to switch my plans from September to August. It will be around the
23rd. What are crowds like then? Is it going to be a mistake to go then? We really want to enjoy our time in Universal.

The crowds start to thin out by that time of year but it's still brutally hot. September can be just as bad weather wise but it's usually cooler at night. You will see lighter crowds in September so that will help.

September (after labor day) is a low crowd time. Check the closing times for your dates in August to see what the expected crowd levels are - the later the park closes, the more crowded it is expected to be. Also check the cost of express passes, the more expensive the larger crowds expected.
I did a check and the express passes are at their cheapest. We booked for August 30th for four nights at the Doubletree near the Universal Entrance. Any idea on the crowd levels? We have early entry with our package.
