Please let us know what they say. They said we expected to have an answer yesterday on whether or not the cases were confirmed. Now they're saying today.

Right. I found the article. It sounds like the reason this school decided to close as opposed to the one in my county (which is the one with the student who's father is Obama's aide who went to Mexico) is because the student appears to have no link to anyone who has been to Mexico recently - he may have got it from someone at the school and therefore it is already spreading.

Please let us know what they say. They said we expected to have an answer yesterday on whether or not the cases were confirmed. Now they're saying today.

carissanboys is exactly right.

They are concerned that it is not being spread in the community, as opposed to coming straight from Mexico.

They have closed the school "indefinitely." Now they are trying to determine if they can have sporting events, etc. And how long the school will be closed.

The case is not CDC confirmed! They did "confirm" it on the state level, but it has not been confirmed as swine flu. They said they should have confirmation this weekend.

I am glad your daughter is fine. My fear is not getting the flu, it is how do they test you. If it is to shove a qtip up into your sinuses, I have a huge problem with that. Can you tell me how they testing your daughter?

Well, from DD's reaction, maybe the nurse did shove it all the way up to her sinuses!
Seriously, it was a qtip just into the nostril to grab a booger.
DD thinks it is funny the strange things doctors want for samples, and she was OK with that in theory, but did not like the actual sampling at all.
Again, this was garden-variety flu she had. The MD almost didn't test her, since we brought her in at the very first sign of symptoms because the previous week 7 kids out of her preschool class of 14 had flu. She was still looking fairly well when we got there.
But we all got on Tamiflu that day, and even though I know DH & I did come down with it, ALL of our symptoms were very mild and it didn't last long. I have become a Tamiflu convert, because it was nice to have the flu not last so long.

PS: Sorry if I did duplicate anything. I didn't stay up all night reading this thread, just sort of skimmed the pages since then. In the meantime I slept (gotta keep that immune system up!), ate (ditto), got DD off to preschool (to pick up whatever bugs are floating around ), and got my annual screening mammogram.
Life goes on!

FYI -- back to swine flu -- the mom of one of the Newberry, SC teens, who also got the swine flu, said yesterday (paraphrased, because my memory isn't that great): we're well now, and we didn't have the bubonic plague!

Not to be cynical, but sometimes I get the feeling that some of these people/officials are kind of enjoying their time in the spotlight? We've already heard the CDC & the WHO flaunt the number of people visiting their websites, now it just seems like these press conferences start to include more and more people who probably shouldn't be commenting on a medical situation.

For example the School Superintendent in Maryland just made comments he probably shouldn't have. Basically he just gave the media a soundbyte of him basically saying, "Next week, you never know, it could be you." That's great, now someone use the hook and pull him off he has no business commenting on this.

At the big level 5 announcement the WHO said they were going to watch Spain closely and we would go to a level 6 if they showed human to human spread...

Well on that day their report of Spain had 4 confirmed cases.

Yesterday at 4pm the WHO posted that Spain had 13 confirmed cases. This is why I think they are going to raise it to a 6 sometime today.

I think it is way too soon to assume that cases being confirmed now are necessarily a result of human to human spread, given the delay between testing and confirmation. As of the most recent update, the number of confirmed cases in Spain is holding steady at 13.

That being said, thank you all very much for your insight and opinions. I have been watching this thread for a few days now and am not planning on cancelling my trip, but am gathering ideas to best avoid getting sick at all while at the World. Here's what I've gathered for what you all have said:
1. Lysol everything in the room
2. Bring lots of Purell & anti bac wipes, there's low stock there
3. Purell after every ride and before and after meals and snacks
4. Consider cancelling Mousekeeping (with 4 kids I really don't want to. I can use all the help I can get!)

One question: One of my DD's is a finger sucker. No use getting her to stop, I've tried. How can I try and keep her from getting sick? Purell constantly? Is there something I can give the kids to boost their immune systems before we go? Is there something safe for babies? She's 1yo.

I agree that they are doing a good job, but some of these people do not need to be up there making certain comments.

I also don't like that Maryland wants to be able to allow private businesses to buy into their allotment of anti-viral medications. So now we're going to sell of treatment to the highest bidders?

The clusters are very interesting, too. It sounds like this is definitely shaping up to be a school-zone incident. Looks like 1 or 2 bring it in from Mexico and then pass it around schools and College campuses. Of course these are always a breeding ground for the flu to move around.

I'm in the minority.

What would this be like if Mexico City hadn't shutdown? 20 million people would make it easy for the virus to be in hundreds of thousands right now. Considering Mexico didn't have stockpiles of flu medication for this, it would be sad to know how many children would be impacted.

If media wasn't getting this out and letting sick people know they should get help, sick people would likely have spread this much further and it would be far worse. It's safe to say if some of these 300 schools hadn't closed, it's likely that thousands of children would be sick.

Yes, if treated this flu strain is CURRENTLY not bad.

I would rather they be proactive than bury their head in the sand.
