Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

I live in a state which has not had any problems whatsoever, but I do have allergies. I was at the grocery store and I was coughing a bit from my sinus drippage, and I felt slightly embarrassed, because I'm sure people were looking at me wondering, "Uh-oh, why is that guy coughing?"

I live in southeast Louisiana ~ this is the worst possible place to be during allergy season :lmao:

I have had allergies so bad that they developed into a sinus infection and inner ear infection.
I take Astalin and I LOVE IT :lovestruc
If you suffer from seasonal allergies I would ask your doc about it! FOR ME its the best stuff I have ever used ~ and I have used them all :lmao:
I am basically allergic to New Orleans :rotfl:

[I emailed Disney we had stayed there in march and had a terrible time finding hand sanitizer Poly was sold out and tried numerous stores finally found it at stroller center in Epcot. I am an RN and am a fanatic about hand washing, I told them it should easier to find in the hotels and parks, and they should at the very least have hand sanitizer at the restaurants. They actually called me and listed the stores it is supposed to be sold at I told them it was near impossible to find!! Maybe now they will rethink it!!

quote=BC1836;31575925]The most commonly touched objects in WDW are the finger-ID scanners at all park entrances. A quick splash of hand sanitizer upon immediate entrance to the parks is a helpful, healthy move no matter what day of the year it is or what the pervasive medical concern is. We are not suggesting WDW install dispensers at each entrance; however, a small portable dispenser should be a part of each guest's/family's on-site possessions.

Egypt slaughters pigs to stop flu
Egypt has begun a mass slaughter of all 300,000 pigs in the country in an effort to prevent swine flu spreading.

The cull was going ahead despite there being no cases of swine flu in Egypt. However, neighbouring Israel has two confirmed cases in humans.

"It is decided to slaughter all swine herds present in Egypt, starting from today," said Health Minister Hatem el-Gabali, according to Mena news agency.

Swine flu has spread from Mexico to several countries around the world.

Folks...this is a virus..spraying Lysol in the room in the air is going to do as much good as spraying pine scented air fresheners..the concentration you will need to effectively kills viruses is enough to kill you first..no, I don't care what the Lysol can says..read first...

As far as the hand goop goes - as long as you know how to use it, it is moderately effective against some viruses...but if you want your hands virus free you have to hard clean first - ie hard soap 2 minute scrub and wash then use the goop..if you don't believe me - google and read for yourself..now don't get me wrong I am not saying it is not a good idea..it sure does kill bacteria and such..but as for viruses - a quick squirt and rub, then touch a door handle..well - you see what I mean..

As far as the 95 rating masks - yep they work for limited amount of time but you have to wear them properly - they have to pinch the nose and the tie straps have to be tight - well we were told to make sure they are tied correctly they should leave marks on your skin after you take them off...certainly having them hang on your neck ain't going to work - that is not going to scare a viris away..

As far as folks "drowning in the lung fluid" from this flu - come on people ALL flu viruses attack the lung tissue - that is why you cough, wheeze and sneeze - that is the bodies natural defense mechanism kicking in...

As far as staying home when you are sick from a flu - yes that is prudent provided you have the sick time - in this economy most employers could care less...

So, what am I saying - just please be reasonable about this..stocking up with supplies and squirelling youself away in your house is only as good as the surrounding enviroment lets it be good - your house is NOT air tight and unless your house is a fully sealed enviroment - the first time you take a breath, handle anything you are at risk....unless you want to live in a bubble...

Take the necessary precautions, wask hands dillegently, use the stupid goop, don't let folks who are obviously sick spit on you, get plently of rest - eat correctly, exercise if you can - all this gives you a healty immune system...yes, I know this virus can (maybe - yet unproven) hyper stimulate the immune reaction, but if you are strong you at least stand a chance...IF this becomes a pandemic....notice I said IF....

I wonder if Gerry Fordhas any of that swine flu vaccine left.

Oh yeah, he's no lonfger with us and that vaccine was more dangerous than the flu.

Never mind.

How many confirmed US cases now? is it over 100 yet?

.00003% of the US population? I'm getting very concerned now.

Wake me up when/if it gets serious.

True enough.
Lysol does work against some viruses.it says right on the can. N95 respirator masks are only good for so long and a tight fit needs to be ensured.1918 had Cytokine storms assoc. with it that killed so many. But in 1918, we had no antivirals, no modern medicine, and often resp patients died. Not to mention we were in World War I and our resources were simply not there. The swine flu in the 1970's again never came to pandemic proportions. They managed to crank out a vaccine that ended up causing more harm( guiilian Barre syndrome)

The CDC site still says 64 with no deaths.

Lysol spray DOES kill influenza on hard non-porous surfaces.

As does good old fashion clorox cleaner.
As bleach kills everything I have opted to going back to wiping everything down with Clorox in my house.

Not the best smelling and I don't use it on any normal basis but right now ~ this house has a nice bleach scent to it :rotfl2:

Could an expert (perhaps a physician or nurse), tell me which hand sanitizer is the best? I've googled and only come up with hospital articles that discuss properly applying product. Is Purel not the right solution?

I am not a DR but this was discussed earlier...
alcohol based products with at least 40% ethel alcohol. Purell has 65%

Also you want to wash your hands after using it 2-3 times to make it the most effective. Washing your hands with plain old soap and water is always better ~ hot water for at least 20 seconds.

What WILL NOT kill the virus are anti bacteria products with Triclosan. Triclosan will kill strep and staff but not influenza viruses.

Alcohol with 40-60% content ( the higher is better)has the most Viral kill. Avoid Triclosan which is an antibiotic and not effective against viruses. Purell is the best and what we use in the hospital

Please note, Lysol is actually very BAD  for kitty-cats so those DiSers out there who plan to use Lysol, please be careful and observe your cat for any sickness.

Thanks. :) I've actually been using Purel for years and I've been pretty lucky to ward off vacation sicknesses. I'm one of those crazy people that have it hanging off my stroller. Could be luck, but I won't tempt fate not going prepared.

Maybe I should bathe myself and my family in the junk before we go into the parks?

I would say it's also bad for a humans lungs. Something about inhaling alcohol spritzed with apple scent doesn't feel right to me.

I'm a freak - one of the reasons I've stuck to Chlorox over Lysol or other anti-bacterials is because I like the smell! I think it is all the years I spent swimming (I was a competitive swimmer for 10 years as a kid/teen); the chlorine smell is familiar and oddly relaxing.

I am watching a news conf. right now with our Governor here in MN talking about our first probable case of swine flu...

Aslo bad for cats:

Human medications

Oils, tars, grease, gasoline—petroleum products
Petroleum distillates, paint, paint solvents; strippers, thinners, nail polish, nail polish removers, hair spray
Alcohol
Bleach (sodium hypochlorite)
Pine Oils : Pine Sol ®

Chlorine, bromine :
Furniture polish
Pesticides, herbicides, rodenticides, fungicides
The pyrethroids are synthetic pyrethrins such as permethrin

That is a short version of the list on cat health
