Swimming Advice for Kids

Oh like I said in my original post I would NEVER leave them in the water alone. I do have my hubby to help me, but it is still three against two, so I need the swim aides

I totally understand. It's scary when you're outnumbered.

I'm sure whatever you decide will be a help to you and your DH.

Have a wonderful trip!

My girlfriends 4yo daughter who was accustomed to floaties
jumped in a pool without them and sank right to the bottom.
No one noticed. Luckily, my friend immediately missed her and
began looking for her. She ended up in the pool fully dressed
for a luncheon pulling her daughter off the bottom. Sarah,
the 4yo, later explained she didn't know she had to wear the
floaties to float. Be careful about floatation devices, children
need to respect the water at all times.

That is awful that happened to your friend Thank God she is alright. You are right a healthy respect is what is needed for children and the water.

I remember my youngest one wearing a lifevest when she was 3 years old, she hated it and that was the last time she ever wore one. She was more comfortable learning how to dive and swim than wearing a lifevest. I let her go for it ( while I was in the water with her of course ) as long as she could touch the floor with her feet.
She's 7 now and she swims like a fish , goes into the deep part of the pool without a problem but she's not allowed to go there without an adult.
There was never an in between situation with her and I think it all has to do with older kids always around her , and she had to catch up with them to keep up with the fun, along with her not having any fear.
She did have swimming lessons this year in school , one of the days I went to watch them and the swimming teacher basically told me that the other kids were holding her back and asked if it was ok with me to have another teacher take her to the deep side and teach her other things. I gave them my permission.

When my niece was 3 or 4, she kept pestering her mother about swimming in the deep end of the pool. She insisted that she could dive in and swim. My SIL knew she wasn't ready, and kept her in the shallow end. A moment's inattention and my SIL looked up. There was my niece paddling happily in the deep end. When fished out, her comment was, "see, Mommy, I told you I could swim." A funny story in the family because it ended well. ::MinnieMo
