SWEET SIXTEEN :Have they been kissed? PTR: Updated 8/15

Mornin' Rosie!!!!

Morning Christine !!!
Good morning Rosie! Innoventions is lots of fun!!! You just gotta know what to look for. My favourites of the ones I've tried are the Piggy Bank, Storm Struck, and Sum of all Thrills. Waste Management looked like a lot of fun too after seeing Glenn's review on it in his TR. AllEars has lots of good info as mentioned earlier :thumbsup2

ETA: The segway tryouts are empty if you go first thing in the morning

Thanks Jen but I am a little confused are you saying MORNING is the best time ???:confused3 See what poolrat said :confused3

Off topic but I wanted to share this !!!I attended an Inservice today presented by the Self Advocates of the second agency I work for !! The subject was the History and goals of the Self Advocacy movement !!Now as the Advocate for them at my full time job ,this was of interest to me !!
I was horrified to learn some facts that I did not know and are just so shocking
1, The Nazis used the Dev,. Disabled to experiment on methods to kill the Jews:scared1::scared1:
2. Here in the US the Institutions experimented :scared1::scared1:by injecting them with Hepatitis :scared1::scared1:

I know that the world has come a long way but the thought that any human being could be subjected to such traetment ever just saddens me :sad2:

I went to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC and there is a section about the "termination" of the disabled since there were viewed as less than human and damanaged the Nazi attempt to perfect their "superior" race. I cried my eyes out there... there was pictures of children with inteluctual disabilities naked before they were excucuted. It was unbearable to look at. Thanks Sam for sharing this, it is wonderful for people who are not familar with the disabled population to be aware because discrimination of poeple with disabliities continues today. :sad2: The US around that same time was experemting with eugenics, the science dealing with improvement of hereditary factors through social control of reproduction and the Germans looked at US research. But okay sorry the interject some sadness here but it is a pasion of mine and I know Sam (I mean aka Rosie!) too since we work in the field.

I understand your comment about discrimination of people with disabilities today. I've always tried to make sure my kids realize that just because someone is "different" from them in some way, doesn't make them any different as a person or a human being. Our Scout Troop made an extra effort to do the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge, and have people come in to speak to them so they see we are all the same, in spite of our differences.

As an outsider, though, my problem is knowing the right way to treat people with disabilities. On one hand you want to make concessions, but on the other hand most people I know like that just want to be treated like everyone else and show they can do things just as well as anyone. They don't want to be treated any differently. (now I know there are extremes, but I hope you understand where I'm coming from) I think a lot of people, since they don't know WHAT to do, try to avoid the situation so they don't do the wrong thing. :confused3

Agree Rosie...... :thumbsup2 (but now you have to explain those dignified and respectful remarks you always make about me around here.......) :rolleyes1 ;)

First let me answer the serious stuff !!I fully relise how the openness and overly so at times personalities of the Dev. Disabled can make it hard for the general public !!I will give some examples If they aproach you and appear about to Bear Hug you and you aer a a stranger , it is okay to say how about a handshake we haven't met before !!Usually this is all it takes !!If they cut in line and the staff says to them you need to wait don't say it's okay as they do need to learn to wait like everyone else ! Most of them are absolutely wonderful human beings , who want to be part of the REAL world !!They are quite likely to tell you a lot of information that is of no interest to you what's so ever such as there birthdays , their families birthday etc, etc A staff should redirect them , before this gets tooooo overcoming !!:rotfl2:

Now as for treating you with RESPECT ! You know only to well it is outta LOVE not disrespect , although sometimes ;):rotfl2::rotfl2:

Thanks for the info Rosie! I truly think that education about topics like this is the only hope we have of people ever making true change with how we deal with each other, whether it is those with disabilities, people of different races or cultures, and even people from other countries (like those infernal British......) :rolleyes1 :rotfl:

And yes Rosie, I know we have never met but even so pick on each other out of love due to a common ground called Disney! Even so, you know you are one of what is becoming many people on the DIS that I would one day love to meet and know immediately we would have a great time and a lot of laughs together!!! :thumbsup2  (now I just hope Dan, the Fauntleroy one, and Glenn don't end up reading this.......)
Thanks Dan:lmao::lmao::lmao:I see Marv is egging you on to enlarge the gallery!!!:rotfl2::rotfl2:
The more I see Dan post on here, the less I think he actually needs to be egged on at all!!! :lmao:

Thanks Jen but I am a little confused are you saying MORNING is the best time ???:confused3 See what poolrat said :confused3

Although Jen is my bestest Canadian buddy...oh wait, Yuki's neck and neck with her...anyway, I have to agree with Poolrat. When we were there in June, I stopped by in the morning and couldn't get a Segway lesson because they were out with the people taking the tour. They told me I'd have to come back in the afternoon.

Rosie, you're just interested because you saw Tim mention something about a Piggy!!! :lmao:

As in Piglet? :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Just popping in to say hi, Rosie.

I can't believe the schools closed for "cold weather". We've had subzero temperatures and our schools never close.

Rosie, I hope you will get the park hours soon, don't they come out about 6 months ahead? So August should be released around the beginning of February.

The first site to have them appears to be the travel agents' website, this is the link to the August schedule: http://www.disneytravelagents.com/S.../pdf/ParkHours/WDW_Operating_Calendar_aug.pdf

I just checked and it already says August 2011, it has a few hours, but a lot are still missing. But I would suggest to check this thread regularly!

I agree, I just learned something very important from Rosie about how to react to an unwanted hug from a stranger. :thumbsup2 And it is strange, but I have learned from the DIS a lot about people with special needs because there seem so many who choose to come to WDW because WDW makes it easy for them, which I think is wonderful! :thumbsup2 I really appreciated that Katharina could enjoy so many restaurant meals without worrying about the ingredients.

I think I may have shared this before :confused3Since a child I have had a natural affinity to the disabled , from the boy who lived in our boarding house and hand birth defects of his feet and one hand and who was shunned as no one would touch his hand I either held it first or punched whoever refused too:lmao:to girls at school who were assimilated into the "normal" school and thus were picked on teased etc !!the one I regularly smacked those who picked onher or the other who needed no one to smack for her but always listened to me to the point that the Techers always sat her next to me in asemblies asth only hope of not having a major blowout !!:lmao:One would tink that I would hve known then what the good Lord intended me to do ... but NO I have to wait till I was in my 50's to work in the field I wa sborn to be in!!!:cloud9:Growing up in the boarding house I was exposed to many diferent types/races / creeds of folks , I treated them as my mother taught me I looked at their "souls " not their appearance as God intended !!I believe thanks to hr that I am truly unbiased except when it comes to mistreating those who donot or cannot help there differences such as Dev.Disabled !!Okay Rosie is off the soap box !!

And yes Rosie, I know we have never met but even so pick on each other out of love due to a common ground called Disney! Yesterday was the coldest temp here in 15 years :scared1:The concern is those waiting for buses in the FRIGID cold not so much the amount of snow !!

Glad I could help in th HUGS department !! I have one consumer who is very free with his hugs , I allow him too once and tell him that;s it no more and he listens . We have to walk a fine line as Staff, we have to be ever mindful that that is our role we are NOT their friends or family , harsh as that may seem , it is essential in order for us to teach, train and assist them to become as indepenadent as possible , I am sure Karin knows what I mean!!

WDW is the best place in the World for people with any sort of disability!!! :cloud9:

So excited! :woohoo::yay: We are going to Disney on Ice Friday!!! Just thought I'd share... :goodvibes

I have to add to the serious stuff. My DH had a cousin who was developmentally disabled. You are so right about too much info at times, I cringe when I remember some of the things she would tell me or anyone who would listen. My MIL would not allow her to go to an institution when her parents died. It was the early 50's and it is amazing what people did back then. She loved to give hugs to anyone but didn't know her own strength. She broke my finger when she thought I was hurting my DH. It was unintentional and when she realized what had happened was very upset. We always had to tell her to be gentle with my kids when they were born. She was great with them though and they adored her. That has to be a hard but rewarding field to be in.

I'm waitng on the August hours too. We can't make any plans until they come out since we aren't doing PH's and have to plan our parks around our ADR's.
