So on to 2011.

Cast:

Me (Sara) – 36 (!!)Total Disney addict, complete and utter planner for everything I do and when it comes to holidays I am even more obsessive. My first “Disney” trip was to Anaheim in 1979 when I was 4. I can remember snippets and keep meaning to get my parents slides out to see if it jogs my memory any further. First trip to “the world” was April 1982. EPCOT had not long opened and my love affair with all things Disney became apparent. Looking back I obviously get my strict itinerarys (planned months in advance!) from my Dad. He had a strict plan of where we were going every day – in those days it was Circus World, Seaworld, Magic Kingdom and EPCOT – and I think we made a trip to Busch Gardens – how things have changed. We then took a break for several years while my Dad tried to establish his business. My family makes all types of sugar confectionery but in particular lettered rock. From 1992 we went every couple of years – staying in a mixture of hotels and complexes. I loved it – every minute of it – from the smell as you arrive at Orlando International – to the feeling you get as you pick up the hire car and know you are truly on your way! Nothing however compares to the feeling I get as I enter the Magic Kingdom and look straight up Main Street – that is truly my happy place!

DH – Jonathan. My wonderful husband. Loves me more than words can say and puts up with my Disney addiction. Although he visited Orlando in 2001 for a golfing trip he had never been to Disney!!!!! We made our first trip together in November 2003 – DD stayed home with DM and DF as she was only 2 and we felt too young to appreciate it. We had a wonderful time and Jonathan fell in love with the place. He warmed to the characters (something I didn’t think would happen) loved the magic of the Magic Kingdom and the thrill of the other parks – I had met my perfect match!!! He has visited three times more with me since.

DD – Amber. The light of our life! Amber will celebrate her 10th birthday on our trip and went for the first time in 2005 and then again in 2007 and 2010. She is a true princess and the characters love her. She is so polite with them and tells every one a different story. She is being more of a help this time with the planning as she has more experience of what she wants to do.

DMIL – Penny and DFIL - Martin. Came with us in 2007 which was their first Disney experience. It was not all perfect then but things have moved on hugely since then and we are all looking forward to spending the holiday together.

How this trip came about ….

Well it was back in April 2010 and I was at work when I received an email on my phone to say that Disney were once again offering Free Dining in 2011. This was too great an opportunity to miss! I sent a text to Jonathan straight away along the lines of for the same price as a couple of weeks in Turkey (we were supposed to be having a budget holiday in 2011 as 2010 was so extravagant!!) we could have 2 weeks in Orlando. I told him we didn’t need a car and I would be more than happy to stay at Pop Century or Coronado Springs. Jonathan was immediately keen (although this will be reputed when I nag him about saving !) although he said under no circumstances would be not have a car. I have to be honest I did agree. He did agree that there would be no need to go to Universal etc so that would save there. We would have a Disney pass and have a much more relaxing holiday !!?

I started to do a bit of research and found that Complete Orlando were offering 40% off at Saratoga Springs and Old Key West for Summer 2011. Bonus!! I looked into it and thought it looked lovely. It would be great to be so close to Downtown Disney. Now that Amber was getting older I did not feel the same urge to be as close to the Magic Kingdom.

Jonathan then suggested that we say to his Mum and Dad about going. My Mum and Dad would be joining us for part of the holiday in 2010 so it seemed only fair. I was a little hesitant after our last experience but fully excepted that we were all to blame the last time and that it would be totally different if we were to go again.

Jonathan phoned and suggested it and they were very keen. They said they would like to bring Sam our nephew again. I have to be honest I really wasn’t sure about this. The last time it had been the tension between Amber and Sam that had caused all the problems. We HAD all moved on though and the children were older and did seem to get on much better.

Therefore we were all ready to book …. ?? Not quite …. Sams parents were hesitant in letting him go until we found out the exact dates and the date the children would be expected back at school. Unfortunately, we couldn’t leave until 26th August when we were able to get time off work and the shop and the schools were due back on 5th September. We were happy to let Amber miss the first week but Sam was due to start High School and it would be awful for him to start late when friendships had been established. Sam also agreed that he would not want to start late.

We therefore all agreed we would have to go without him. I was actually really disappointed that he couldn’t come which was heightened later in the year when Amber and Sam got together – I think it would have really worked this time.

Anyway … He couldn’t come so we got on with the booking. I was originally going to book 2 Studio rooms but on further investigation preferred the look of the 2 bedroom villa. I double checked that we had 2 bathrooms!!!! And thought it would be much better as when Jonathan and his Dad played golf (which would be inevitable), in Studio rooms his Mum would have been left in the room on her own wondering if Amber and I were up and about. At least this way we would know when each other was up and ready and we also had a communal area we could relax in all together instead of each going back to our own room.

We finally booked in early May. I booked the flights and car hire with Virgin so I could get my 15% and it made sense to book the Universal Tickets with them to, to take advantage of the discount. Our relaxing holiday had of course been knocked on the head in favour of doing “everything” again with his Mum and Dad. It did of course end any talk of a “cheap” holiday as this was anything but “reasonable”. You’re only young once!!!

With Complete Orlando I booked the 2-Bedroom Villa at Saratoga Springs as well as 14 Day ultimate Disney passes which gave us 14 days free dining. Our travel dates were 25th August 2011 until 9th September.

Now … we had to just forget about it as we still had that years holiday to enjoy!!!

We often talked about it with his Mum and Dad but when we were alone we obviously only talked about the holiday we still had to enjoy!

And enjoy it we did!! It was an amazing holiday. We loved every minute of it and often talked about the fact we hoped we had done the right thing by inviting his Mum and Dad along as we had really enjoyed spending some time just the 3 of us. We then realised how much it had meant to enjoy the last week with my Mum and Dad and that it would be lovely to share it with his Mum and Dad too.

One thing we did realise was that we loved being away for longer than 2 weeks. It had given us a little bit more time to relax. We suggested to his Mum and Dad that we add 2 nights on to the holiday and they agreed. I rang Virgin and changed the flights. Obviously they had gone up in the meantime so that was a bit of a price difference and I then rang Complete Orlando and changed the dates with them. Our free dining would be for 16 days but I did not upgrade the 14 day Disney tickets to 21 day tickets, I just said we would not go into a Disney park on the first or last day!

My Mum and Dad arrived back just after us and had enjoyed their selves so much and had looked upon our free dining with envy that they decided to book themselves in at Saratoga Springs in October 2011 for 10 nights. I have to say I am really sad that they can’t enjoy the trip with us but it is still busy in the shop hopefully in August/September so they can’t really get away. It will be nice for them to have a holiday going at their own speed for a change.

As we approached Christmas 2010 I had news from work that we would be re-locating to Norwich which is about a 35 minute drive away from our current office. This filled me with dread slightly as I didn’t relish the thought of working that far away from Amber’s school. I accepted that she was growing up though and that soon would not want me taking and collecting her. This news was shortly followed by the fact that the post I undertook of which there were 3 in the County would now be reducing to 1. Great!!! Anyway, I applied for the post and was successful so opted to go back to work full time!! Scary thought. But to be honest it was a huge difference financially and I’m not sure how we would have ended up paying for the holiday if I had not done so.

The festivities of Christmas came and went with talk of the holiday and what obstacles were in the way i.e. Valentines, Easter, Birthdays etc etc.

I managed to book an Airport Travel service to take us to the airport and collect us after the holiday. I love this – I hate having to watch Jonathan drive back in the early hours. I always try to stay awake as I think its only fair when he is driving but sometimes its so hard!!

I began the new job and travelling in January and the next few weeks passed in a blur. Although the Area Support Officer for Norfolk I was seconded out to assist in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire on certain days and the extra long hours and travel meant I had no time to think of holidays.

I suddenly realised in February that the date to book ADR’s was fast approaching!! Jonathan was really good and helped me with an itinerary. His Mum and Dad had made it more than clear they were happy to go wherever we picked. I did give them my Disney Dining Guide and they suggested places they liked in 2007 but other than that were happy to eat anywhere.

With input from Amber we successfully booked all our ADR’s and were lucky enough to secure meals at the California Grill, Ohana, Teppen Edo, Corel Reef, Crystal Palace to name but a few.

The next couple of months drifted on and the whole time we were noticing that Jonathan’s Dad was suffering with his hernia. We felt that he should really get it seen to prior to going as it could cause him grief on holiday. He agreed to go to the Doctors which is quite an achievement. The Doctor suggested that he have it operated on and said he hoped to get him in way before we went away in order to give him plenty of recuperation time.

He got his date – 22nd May 2011 and in he went and had it operated on. He came out the same day and said he was so pleased he had had it done and was now looking forward to the holiday even more! Hmmmm famous last words!!! A few days later he began to get pain as he breathed so he went back to the Doctors who took a blood test. The test came back very quickly and he was informed his blood was in danger of clotting and he needed to go back on the Friday. So last Friday he want back to the Doctors for the test and also told him he had pain in his legs. He got sent straight to A&E where they discovered he had DVT with a clot in his calf. Nightmare!!!! Luckily they had managed to catch it very quickly so he was home the same day. He has worphorine to inject for 5 days and then tablets for about 3 months. We were on tenterhooks as to whether he would be able to fly but the Doctor said there would be no problem. Seeing as the balance of the holiday with Virgin is due in 12 days (I’d paid mine!) I advised the in-laws to get the insurance sorted. I did this on Monday night and it was no problem. We listed all his symptoms etc and although the cost was higher he is fully insured and raring to go!!! It was a tense few days!

We then booked the Gatwick Hilton for the night before we fly and got a reasonable rate there with breakfast.

My friends then arrived back from Orlando and they had spent 2 weeks at SSR so I couldn’t wait to hear all about it. They said it was amazing and the villa was huge! They did however show us pictures of the hire car they had had – a Ford Explorer!! Jonathan, when he saw it, insisted we had one. I had to get in touch with Virgin and upgrade to a Full Size SUV. It cost a little bit more but it does look a beast! I doubt I will get the seat far enough forward to reach the pedals!!

That is basically where we are at the moment.

I have started to book the golf. I have allowed them 4 rounds!

I still have lots of things to sort so am looking forward to getting all this done over the next 11 weeks. Trouble is I am working 7 days a week between the day job and the shop. When I am there dipping chocolate, selling rock and making donuts I let myself drift away to Main Street and know that it will all be worth it.

I read your other TR and loved it and am in on this one. We will be there Aug 23- Aug 31. I drive a Ford Explorer and its not really that big. I am 5' 2" and reach the pedals no problem. I love it and I am sure you will too. It does use alot of gas though.

Well ... It has been a busy few days since I last posted.

It was our wedding anniversary and I was lucky enough to get an iPad2 from Jonathan so I have been playing on that.

Amber went away with the school for a few days so we went to the cinema and saw The Hangover 2 - it was really funny!!

I also had to start thinking about Amber's birthday cake for this year. Last years was a bit extravagant but it was delicious

1580-1.jpg

We are a bit tied as Amber has chosen Crystal Palace for her birthday dinner and I am sure my only options are a podium cake or a Mickey Head with her name on?? When I spoke to Amber she said she would love the Red velevet custom cake again but now I can't get into Chef Mickey's and I'm not really sure where else I can get the custom cake. I thought about picking one up myself from the Boardwalk Bakery but then found out that even if we take it to the Crystal Palace they can't store it or serve it so not point. So ... unless I can think of any other plan it is going to be a Mickey Head a Crystal Palace.

I have also changed another reservation from Kouzzina by Cat Cora to Tutto Italia at EPCOT.

So here are my plans so far ...

Thursday 25th August - Travel to Gatwick and stay at Gatwick Hilton
Friday 26th August - Fly to Orlando, Check into SSR and eat at Turf Club Bar and Grill
Saturday 27th August - Jonathan and Martin and playing golf and we are having an easy day. That night we are eating at the Rainforest Cafe.
Sunday 28th August - Ambers Birthday - Magic Kingdom and then Crystal Palace at night
Monday 29th August - Islands of Adventure/Universal Studios and Cheesecake factory at night
Tuesday 30th August - J+M playing the Oak Trail, me, Penny and Amber are breakfast at Chef Mickeys and then we are all going to Blizzard beach. Dinner at the Rose and Crown
Wednesday 31st August - Seaworld and dinner at Raglan Road
Thursday 1st September - Busch Gardens and then Tony Romas.
Friday 2nd September - Epcot and then Hollywood Studios for dinner at 50's Prime Time Cafe
Saturday 3rd September - J+M at Golf, me, Penny and Amber having breakfast at Ohana and then all going to Typhoon Lagoon. Dinner at Teppen Edo in EPCOT.
Sunday 4th September - Hollywood Studios and early dinner at Mama Melrose with the Fantastic Dinner Package
Monday 5th September - J+M at Golf and then a free day with dinner at the California Grill
Tuesday 6th September - Islands of Adventure/Universal Studios and then Bubba Gumps for late lunch/early dinner
Wednesday 7th September - Tusker House Breakfast, Animal Kingdom and dinner at Tutto Italia
Thursday 8th September - Free morning with lunch at Beaches and Cream and then Magic Kingdom, Dinner at Ohana and back to Magic Kingdom for Electrical Parade etc
Friday 9th September - J+M at Golf and free day then dinner at Chef Mickeys
Saturday 10th September - Aquatica and then dinner at Corel Reef
Sunday 11th September - Gatorland and fly home :sad1:

A busy 17 days!!!!

Can't wait!!!!

Boo, none of our days match up! Are you eating at the DTD or AK location of Rainforest Cafe? If it's DTD, we'll be there that night!
Just an note from the people on the US/IOA boards-- I originally had my plans the same as you, MK on Sunday and IOA/US on Monday, but were told that Mondays are much, much busier than Sundays at IOA/US. We switched our days immediately! :thumbsup2 Although I'm guessing Amber wanted to go the MK on her birthday?
You guys are definitely packing a lot into your vacation!! Sounds like a blast!

Hi Kylie

Thats a shame but we are at the DTD Rainforest Cafe so we could see you there?? I've read that to about IOA on a Monday but we are at MK as that's where Amber wants to go on her birthday.

We do like to pack at lot in - exhausts most people reading it :rotfl:

I’m back.

Sorry I haven’t updated for so long! I don’t know where the weeks are going. It has been one mad rush after another.

I do have really BIG news though!!! But we will get to that ….

Since I last updated we have been really busy with work and weekends away. Jonathan went to France at the end of June to play golf with my Dad and some friends. My parents had also arranged to spend the weekend with friends in Hereford and they overlapped so I said I would drive my Mum to Hereford and Jonathan would take Dad there from France and then Jonathan and I would spend the night and then come home.

Me and Mum had a pleasant trip down. It took almost 5 hours!! I didn’t realise it was so far. We booked into her hotel and most of her friends were there so we sat outside for a drink and then went back and got changed for dinner. The dinner was nice and at about 8:30 Jonathan and Dad arrived back. Jonathan and I said our goodbyes and left to check into our Bed and Breakfast which was The Green Man in Hereford. It was really lovely.

034.jpg

037.jpg

We went down to the bar and had a drink and they made Jonathan a chicken ceaser salad which he enjoyed.

We went back to our room as both of us were exhausted.

The next day we got up quite early and had breakfast and then drove the The Bullring which is a shopping Mall in Birmingham. I got some new Fit Flops for the holiday and some for Amber. We had a drink and a cupcake and then I got Amber a nice holiday bag and a couple of summer dresses. Jonathan got a couple of T-Shirts. We then drove home and picked up Amber from his Mum and Dads and then went out for tea.

For those of you who read my trip report from last years holiday you will know that my brother bought Amber a Maine Coon cat for Christmas. As you can see from the picture below she is getting much bigger and Amber enjoys taking her outside on the lead. We don’t let her out alone!

044.jpg

Now for the big news!!! The following weekend we took Amber to Pizza Hut with her friend Lourdes. Lourdes and Amber haven’t been friends for that long but Lourdes lives around the corner and they now play most evenings and Lourdes sleeps over most weekends. It has been so great for Amber to have a “best” friend and they are really similar in their likes and dislikes. Although the same age they go to different schools in our village but will go to the same High School in September 2012.

Anyway … we had a nice time in Pizza Hut and Lourdes is the sort of child who feels completely at home in our company. While we were there we were talking about our holiday to America and Lourdes asked if she could see the dvd of Amber on Rip Ride Rocket. When we got home we watched it and Lourdes jokingly said “I wish I could come in your suitcase”. Well … they then went to bed and Jonathan and I watched the TV. I discreetly went on the laptop (he would have presumed I was on the DIS!) and looked to see if I could get an extra seat on our plane for her. Having a 2-bed villa at Saratoga Springs I knew that accommodation wouldn’t be an issue and also we had booked a car with 7 seats and there were presently only 5 of us. Jonathan then looked over and asked what I was doing. When I went to say he said “I really wish we had booked for Lourdes to come with us – it would be so lovely for Amber”. I then told him that I was looking up the cost of flights!! We both got really excited when they had a flight (and a little annoyed that it was half the cost of what we had paid 12 months earlier!!)

We then discussed what the issues might be to her coming. He phoned his Mum and Dad (even though it was 10:30pm!) and asked their views. They thought it would be a great idea. We then decided that I would telephone Lourdes’ Mum the next day and ask her. We decided not to mention anything to the girls in case her Mum said no. I didn’t sleep that night. I was so excited. I just knew that Amber would love having somebody her own age to enjoy her holiday with.

The next morning I asked my Mum for her views and she said that her only 2 concerns would be that she would miss her Mum or that she was ill. Well, if she were ill we would deal with it exactly the same as if it were Amber and with regards to missing her Mum she spends so much time at our house I didn’t think it would be an issue.

Anyway this was the weekend of Ambers dancing show so I had to do her hair and make up and drop her off at the studio.

055.jpg

Once I had dropped her off we went to my Mums and I rang Lourdes’ Mum. I really didn’t know what to say as I didn’t know how I would react if a near stranger asked if they could take Amber to America for over 2 weeks?? Anyway she was very nice and said that with Lourdes being her 4th child she had got used to them being away from home and thought it would be absolutely great for her and really thanked me. She said that she would need to check with her Dad who was working away in Vietnam and sometimes took a couple of days to reply!! A couple of days to reply!!! She was talking to a woman who does everything on impulse and now I had to wait !!!

I telephoned Virgin Atlantic just to be on the safe side and they agreed to hold the seat until Tuesday at 5pm which I thought was brilliant!

We had to keep the secret all weekend. Lourdes came with us to watch Amber in her show on the Sunday night and we said nothing! On Monday I was sat at work and my Mum rang to say that Paula (Lourdes’ Mum) had rung her (obviously had that number as that is where I rang from on Saturday) and said that her Dad had replied and it was fine for Lourdes to go and she would drop the money round that evening!

I was so excited – I phoned Jonathan and then his Mum and Dad. I then emailed Complete Orlando who we had booked the accommodation with and got the free dining plan. They came straight back and said that they would add her on and that Disney would honour the extra person receiving the free dining

When I left work I picked my Mum up and we went to get Amber from school. When she got in the car I said we just needed to ring Dad. I put him on hands free and he said he had something to tell Amber and then he told her. I wanted to cry!! She was absolutely thrilled – she couldn’t believe it!!

Here she is receiving the news!

056.jpg

Once home Lourdes came round about 5pm and they just jumped about for ages and then we talked about it for ages.

I got everything extra booked and paid for the next day so that’s our big news. Our trip is now for 6 and not 5 !!

Here are Amber and Lourdes together!

What a great update!! They will have so much fun!! All ur plans sound great!!!

I love the picture of Amber and your cat-- so sweet! Also-- how fun for Amber to have a friend along!! One of my favorite vacation memories is the one where I was allowed to bring a friend to the beach-- and I don't even like the beach! I'm sure Amber will have sooo much fun!!

Hi Sara... that is great news about Amber's friend coming with you!! Has Lourdes been to WDW/Florida before? :goodvibes

I have been so busy and so slack at updating this PTR. As it is we are now at the Airport, checked in, in the Vroom and just waiting to board!!! We have everything crossed the Irene is going to fizzle out!!

The moaning from the In-Laws has started already but Jonathan and are are (so far!) laughing it off! IT WILL NOT GET TO ME THIS TIME!!!!

Amber and Lourdes are loving being together.

OUr plane has switched from a 747 to an Airbus so unfortunately (!!) the in-laws are 17 rows away from us - shame!!!

I am taking good notes so promise there will be a Trip Report on my return.

Sara xx

Have an amazing time! So jealous, my parents and aunt & uncle are in WDW this week & been sending me emails with everything they've been up to :)
Sure the in-laws will be fine, ignore any moaning & remember you are in the best place in the whole world :goodvibes:

Luv & pixie dust,

Emma princess: x

Have an awesome trip!!! I will be anxiously awaiting your trip report!:cheer2:

Well... We've been back a week!!! I have been so busy getting back to work, washing, ironing etc that I have barely had time to check the DIS.

We had a great time and I can't wait to start my TR. The In-Laws were as expected. Far, far better than last time but still annoying at times.

I have had a little development since I've been back ...

I'm GOING BACK IN 11 DAYS :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

Decided to go back out with Mum and Dad when they leave on 1st October. They have a 1 bed villa at Saratoga Springs so I knew there was room for me. They were pleased I was thinking of going so I booked a flight! I am going to just go for a week and flying back on my own the following SAturday/Sunday. Jonathan and Amber are staying at home because of home and work. I feel really guilty about having a week myself so have promised to lavish them with gifts!!

I plan to get this trip report started before I go so will post the link here.
