I had (almost 8 years ago) a Sweet 16-- VFW hall, DJ, half-catered food (half my parents made). We had a bunch of decorations, etc. I had a great time! Most of my friends (except for some of my Jewish friends, who had hugely lavishly bat mitzvahs) had some sort of sweet 16 party-- whether a pool party or fancy dinner at home or country club.
I stopped having birthday parties (which were basically just a bunch of girls over to swim and sleepover) after I turned 13, so 16 was special. Besides my high school and college grad parties, it was the last party held in honor of me.
