I see someone won a sweepstakes...congrats

I was just thinking, there are alot of contests/sweepstakes out there & I enter alot, but..............

Has anyone won a BIG one?

I also heard that you have to pay taxes on them at the end of the year?

Anyone have good/bad sweepstakes/contest stories?

I always wonder about some of these, like if there are people out there that really win.
or if they dowin & cant afford the taxes or cant collect the prize???

How do people typically get notified??

I sure would love to win a pd trip or house or $$$$$....wouldnt' we all!!!!

I was called last night to go to a Time share spiel . This was from DD entering me in a Box at the mall for a Disney Vacation add.

Was told i have to be there for 90mins and I get a 27in wide screen (not LCD or plasma)but also have the chance to draw my own prize of either that a SUV (ford I think ) or 25,000 in cash.

They called and then E-mailed me with all the details. Never asked for any personal info other then verify name and address (they had it I just said it was right). I had to have DL and major CC to get the TV but she stated I could cover the numbers on both they jut check that the names correspond,

We decided not to go but it was temping just for the free TV and some gas vouchers they promised.

They did tell me no taxes on the TV but if I won either of the other 2 I would be held responsible for the taxes on those.

That's why I never get jealous of winners of THE PRICE IS RIGHT show. They have to pay taxes on all those hot tubs, cars, livingroom sets...

...and don't get me started on whoever wins that HGTV home. $800,000+ in taxes!! Good Lord! I'm too poor to win a contest.

I've won twice.

A trip to DisneyWorld for four: airfare, 4 4day Park Hopper passes, three nights at AKL. Yes, I had to pay taxes so it wasn't totally free. But, I'd be more than happy to pay taxes for that trip again.

Also won a carribbean cruise. Everything except for transport to the airport and parking for our care while we were gone was included---even the tips at the end of our cruise! The great thing about this was that they awarded it to DS who was only 15 at the time. Since he had no income other than the prize value, we didn't end up paying any taxes at all on that one.

I always look at the prize and don't ever sign up for a sweepstakes where the prize is something I don't really want. If you don't want it at about 1/3 of retail value, don't try to win it. Your tax rate will be about 1/4, but prize sponsors often report the value of the prize as being significantly higher than those of us on the DIS budget board are likely to pay. (The disney trip valued the nights at AKL at full rack rate and the airfare at prices I've never ever paid to fly from Chicago to Orlando and I make the trip three times per year).

Well, this isn't that big but it was big to me.

I play all the instant win online games that I can find. During the summer I won an IPOD NANO with three cases and it came right after Christmas.

I also won $100.00 cash playing some instant win game during the summer and that check came via Federal Express the other day.

I won a trip to this year's Super Bowl from ThanksUSA.org. My daughter and I completed a treasure hunt game where we had to solve chapters of the game that involved US History and covered 12 of the individual U.S. states. It took us most of last summer to research the answers. Each chapter had winners. Along with the trip, I also won an Ipod Nano and a large beautiful jewelry box.

We won airfare for 2 courtesy of Northwest Airlines, 4 night stay at a Fairmont Resort and 2 tickets to the Super Bowl courtesy of CBS.

My daughter and I can't wait to spend some great quality time together!

Well I was also iffy if people ever won but every year i enter the trek tour de france online win game and the year before last I won a really nice vaccum around $120 i think it was, last year i won a super nice road bike value at $1200. So yes i was skeptical before until i actually won something. Being on top of it everyday also helps, you can play everyday. I just put the first 20 miles on the bike this past weekend...woohoo!!

Last fall, there was a contest for AP holders at Disneyland in conjunction with the Pirates ride to win a new car - a Honda Fit. I won it! I am scheduled to pick it up any day now, they are delivering it to a dealership near my house. I do have to pay tax and license on the vehicle, but with DD15 - it's pretty inexpensive way to get her a car. I still can't believe I actually won.

DH's coworkers told him that they can't make fun of us anymore for having annual passes (they just don't get it do they ) since we won the car.

I won a trip for one night to CA for a photo opt thing valued at $3,000 or I could take $2,000. I took the $2,000 and spent it on a three day cruise out of port canaveral and of course I went to WDW for a few days.

I have also won many little things, like a $100 gift card.

I have wondered if anyone ever wins these things, my kids always want to enter the contests they see on their snacks or cereal or whatever. That's really cool. I never enter the contests for trips because they're always for a family of 4 and we're a family of 7.

We've won a couple of little things, DD won a t-shirt from Goldfish crackers for a contest she entered (it was a smaller prize, she entered for the bigger one of course) and Dh won a $75 gift certificate to nfl.com or something like that for a fantasy football thing.

My kids really make fun of me when I get excited for winning .03 from the SR scratch off, I just tell them that's .03 more than I had before!

If the prize is less than $600 it doesn't get reported to the government (no 1099) but you're still supposed to pay taxes.

I've won a 5 day/4 night trip to WDW with Park Hoppers and airport transport staying at AKL. That was few years ago.

Last year I won $1000 from TV guide, a 30 gb Ipod with $200 Itunes GC, $1000 from 3M and $1000 to DS school, and a 1 year membership to Netflix.

So far this year I've won a Coleman outdoor firepit (I haven't received it yet) - being that the temperature is only 17 right now it may be a while before that gets used.

You guys are super lucky. I enter contests all the time. The only one I've ever won was four books from the Sundance Channel. I was ecstatic (love books anyway), so I'm pretty sure a free car or vacation might bring on some fainting.
