Hi all, I am looking to book a rental car for my upcoming trip. If I book through Costco, can I still earn Rapid Rewards points or do I have to book through Southwest. This is my first time renting a car so I could use some pointers! Thanks!

The bonus points through Sw are done via corporate discount codes offered by the car company; this is very much different than using the SW Rapid rewards shopping portal. You could book the car through the car company site and enter the corporate discount code for SW and still get the points. You typically can use one corporate discount code and one coupon code per rental; you don't have to use the SW site. So when you ask if you can go through Costco, the answer would be no if the costco offer you are trying to use is a corporate discount code because then you would not be able to also use the SW discount code. If the costco offer is a coupon code for an upgrade or free day, then you could use it. FWIW, I booked through budget on the SW site last week and found it to be the best offer at the time for my particulars. I entered the SW BCD to get the discount and bonus points and also a coupon code to get a "free" upgrade.

When you pick up the car give them your SW RR number. That's what I do. It takes a few days for it to post.

By simply providing your RR number at the rental counter you should get the standard 600 points if you're using a SW partner car company. However, if you will receive no bonus points or discounts from any of the several promotions currently offered, including Alamo, without the corporate discount code I mentioned above. If you're trying to take advantage of Costco's discount code instead of SW because it's a better deal then you will only qualify for the standard 600 points. Also, if you decide to book through SW, your RR number is automatically linked and easily traceable in the common occurrence that your rental points don't show up.

You can do this or store your RR # in your account with the company's frequent renter program.
Thanks! Can you elaborate? Even though Alamo has nothing to do with Southwest I can just give them my RR number and it'll post?
Yes. You don't need a special code to earn SW points though sometimes you may find a better price or earn bonus pts by using discount codes offered by SW. With Alamo you can join the Insiders program then enter your SWA RR account # into your Insiders account. Then all future rentals with automatically earn SW pts. I find that in my travel fatigue/excitement I often would forget to give the agent my RR # or if using Alamo's kiosk or online check in, there's no agent to tell so that's why I register in advance.
Worse case scenario you can send a copy of your rental bill/email confirmation after your trip to Alamo requesting credit and they'll do it.
