We are flying SWA in July and when I was starting to drag out the luggage today, DF asked a good question that I did not have the answer to so I am hoping you can help. I read on the Southwest website that each passenger is allowed 3 checked bags. I also read that the weight limit was 50lbs. Is this per bag or total? I was thinking it was per bag, but now am worried that it is a total (not sure that we would hit 100lbs anyway, the 50 for each, but wanted to check before cramming the bags with everything but the kitchen sink) TIA

Beware, SW will charge you extra (about $25 per bag) if a bag is over 50 lbs.

It's 50lbs per bag, not 100lbs for two bags. In other words if one bag is 60 lbs and the other bag is 25lbs you'll have to re-arrange stuff or pay the overweight charges on the 60 lb bag.

NOT just SW but even skycaps are now weighing bags. SW may let a 51 lb bag slide but anything heavier will be charged. Other airlines are the same. Airfares continue to be low and airlines are using overweight luggage charges as a source of revenue.
