SW Question

Hi, I am new to FF miles. About how long does it take to get the SW card, get the miles credited and be able to use them to book flights? I have a dental bill coming up that would reach the required spending. Thanks.

Your miles turn over once a month at the end of your billing cycle.

I have the Southwest card and it took a few weeks to get the card in the mail, and the points will not post to your Rapid Reward acct until after your first bill is paid. They often run promotions where you can get 50,000 points with the card instead of the usual 25,000. So make sure you either wait until they run that promotion (usually happens pretty frequently I think). Or if you want to PM me, they have a referral program so you would get the card with the 50,000 points even if they aren't running the special right now.

I got my card in the mail within a week after applying by phone in early April. My billing cycle closed approximately (or maybe even a little less than?) 3 weeks later. So, basically I had my first bill in my hands almost exactly 30 days from the day I applied. If the previous poster is correct in saying that points post after you pay the bill, then you could pay the bill immediately instead of waiting until it is due. I missed my $2K by a few bucks, because I didn't realize how quickly my cycle was going to turn over, so I haven't gotten my bonus yet. It must start the day they approve you. I thought it would start the day I activated the card.

The points post a few days after your billing cycle date closes, not after you pay.

Both my husband and I applied. We received our cards within a week. Just be sure to finish your purchases a few days before the closing date as purchases list as pending for up to a week.
