My son has a peanut allergy, and he will be 4 when we fly,I would like to wipe down the armrest and tray table before he sits down as a precaution. Will my family qualify for preboarding on Southwest? :confused3

I think its any child 4 and under. Also if you have a dr. note saying he needs precautions, you could try that. We always wipe our trays down, just b/c of germs. Yuck!!!!!!!! Good Luck and have a great trip. Just fyi they always serve little penut bags on board.

Probably not but you may wipe down the tray table, etc. anyway without saying a word. You might want to buy a boxful of those alcohol soaked squares that doctors wipe your arm with before a shot and bring several on each vacation.

(copied from another post) Pre-boarding is to benefit the airline, not you. In order that the airline may choose what boarding order benefits them most, please ask quietly once about pre-boarding if you think that would help.

The airline will rethink your question if/when it dawns on them (may take months if no one raises a real ruckus on each occasion on the spot and no one should) that answering the question with "no" hampers boarding.

Unless they stop preboarding for families with children under 5, you will be allowed to preboard with your 4 year old. I don't think cleaning the armrest will qualify for preboarding if preboarding is suspended on your flight. You can do that in two minutes once you board. They do suspend the preboarding for families with children on flights that have a lot of children, in fairness to the other pax.

Under normal circumstances, as PP's have mentioned SWA allows families with chidren under 5 (4 and under) to preboard. I personally have never seen it suspended but have seen the "no aunts, grannies or new best friends" rule enforced.

Customers needing special assistance will have a blue boarding pass and be boarded first. Then families with children under 4 on a fc/fs basis - and beleive me families line up early to be the first of the preboards!!

I would definately contact SWA prior to the flight to make sure they are aware of his issues and you may qualify for the blue pre-boarding card.

SWA does serve complimentary peanuts on the flights so you will want to see if they can suspend that. Also realize that the prior passengers will likely have been served peanuts so your idea of wiping is a must. I have also been on a flight when the FA's have asked guests to refrain from eating anything they may have brought on board containing peanuts.

Again - your best option is to speak with SWA and find out what they suggest to keep your son safe on the flight.

When we flew southwest in march 2005, there was a child on our flight with a severe peanut allergy, I guess the family requested there be no peanuts handed out, and it was granted, nobody on the entire plane got a bag of peanuts as a precaution, you could always request that to feel safer, good luck.

That happened on a flight I was on last month. The pilot also asked that nobody open any peanut products they brought on board.

Preboarders are already denied choice of the wing exit seats unless they were granted pre-boarding expressly to get one of those seats (as compensation for something). Extrapolating from this, would boarding proceed well if pre-boarders were required to choose seats behind the wings, and with that requirement would fewer people ask to preboard? (Or has this been tried before without success?)
