SW - Now I am nervous about the husband

Not sure why you are worried about SW. On SW, people generally wait in orderly lines. On other carries, people mill around the gate waiting for the boarding groups to be called, then pounce.

Or, putting it another way, I can't remember the last time I was on a SW flight where somebody was trying to board ahead of their assigned group. On just about every single assigned-seat flight, somebody tries to get on the plane and gets told they have to wait for their row/group to be called.

When someone tries to cut me off I always say "Please go ahead. You're obviously more important."

I'm praying that SW doesn't institute preassigned seats. I love their boarding procedure. If you want a good seat you check in early. End of story.

I'm flying out of Hartford (to Chicago) this Sunday...I'm a little nervous about SW as well, it's only my 2nd time flying with them, but I know I'll be fine. The last time I went, my mother and grandmother pre-boarded (Gram is handicapped) and my ex-H and I had B passes. We still ended up with seats directly behind Mum and Gram. And no, they weren't saving - we all figured, we're adults, we don't have to sit together, we'll still end up at the same place :)

ITA! This has been my experience with other airlines. People start lining up like maniacs - you can't even get near the gate if you happen to be part of the group boarding before those that are waiting. It's nuts! At least with SWA, they have orderly LINES for people to stand in, so folks aren't making random lines throughout the bording area. Assigned seats or not - as long as you check in 24 hours ahead of time you are NOT going to have a problem finding an excellent seat on SWA...better than I often get when I'm flying AA or United for business.
