I have a $500 gift card I got from SW that I really have no use for. I get much better flights/times on other airlines out of our home airport. Has anyone been successful turning a gift card back to SW to get the cash instead? I didn't buy it, it really was a gift.

It can not be exchanged for cash, once you have purchased it. I have either received these from SW, from getting bumped to purchasing Gift cards for others. It does state it, in it's policy.

You could check out some of the gift card exchange websites. You can sell your gift card or exchange it for a card you will actually use.

Exchange it? That's not a bad idea. Now I have to find such a site.

Plastic Jungle is one you can try. Keep in mind, though, that most of these sites only pay a % of the card's value, whether it be in cash or for another gift card that you can use.

Good luck.

Is there anybody you really, really care about, to whom you would be comfortable giving a large gift? A whole family, maybe? One that lives somewhere that makes SW a good choice? Regifting a gift card = good, and saves you a LOT of money ;)

Nope. That isn't a particularly large gift for me as I'm generous to my family/relatives. But DH and I are the ones who do the flying for the most part and the rest fly when we take them with us. SW just isnt a good choice for us as fares are higher and scheduled flights aren't convenient compared to other options. Also, other options offer nonstop where most of the SW flights have a layover involved for us.

I found a site that will give me $420 for the card. I can use that $420 to get the same flights on another airline that would have cost the $500 on SW so I don't think I'm losing anything. Also, I'll gain the convenience of better times and routes. That was the final decision point on trading in the card for the cash.
