SW credit use question

some of you folks here are real experts,I figured I'd ask here.... if I have some SW credits,but they're in various names of my fam members...I have till Jan 28th to use them,say toward purchase of another ticket,after that,I can only apply the credits in each persons name,(original flyers)-right?
they won't expire till next Fall,and I'm wondering,could I buy a ticket for a relative before the 28th,using my credits,and then later on,if I have to change a date or something on the ticket,be able to do that?(still using before they expire)
is there a rule against this? would there be penalties? is it even possible?

I don't think there are any penalties for changing a date so long as you're still using the credits before they expire. Once you apply the credits to your relative, he/she is the only one who can use them.

I just used some credits today and boy, what a major hassle! I had credits for four of us and since two of us are traveling in June, I wanted to distribute the four to the two before the 28th. I got to the end and owed about $11 more, put in all the credit card info and kept getting a red message saying I couldn't do it that way. Called Southwest and the agent couldn't figure it out, finally she said just buy each ticket separately.

So that's what I had to do....bought one ticket, applied travel funds to that, then bought the second ticket and applied the remaining funds to that. Then it allowed me to put in my credit card info.

I only purchased the outbound flight so if the prices drop, I can apply those funds to each ticket. The original expiration date did not change.
