I just received two seperate invitations to sign up for a SW credit card, and receive 20,000 after your first purchase.

Did any one else get this? Is it worth getting for the free points? How many points is an average ticket.

I really don't want to sign up for another credit card, but we do need to book 4 tickets for Nov, and if this is worth doing.......

The number of points required depends on the amount of the ticket you want. If there's a "wanna get away" fare available, it's 60 points per $100. So if the fare is $300, you would need 18,000 points for the free ticket.

One thing I read on their web site is that you can't use part points/part cash to purchase a ticket. For example, if a flight costs 6900 points and you only have 6850, you can't figure out how much the 50 points cost in cash and pay that amount or combine your points with points from another card (such as your spouse). You have to "purchase" more points that are sold in blocks of 1000 ($25/1000). I can't remember but there may be a 2000 minimum purchase.

You'll get one free ticket and purchases made on the card can give you enough points for another one. You'll need to charge about $2560 on it to get the rest of the points for a second free ticket.

If you have the credit card, you get points when you make purchases. I have a Delta American Express, I put my groceries, gas, etc. on it and get around 600 miles a month. I pay it off when I get the bill so it doesn't cost anything (I'm still in the first year with no annual fee).

That's how I figured out ours, too. Also, we received an unexpected 250 point sign-on bonus on each card. I'm not sure that the points can be used toward taxes/fees, though.

Hopefully someone with more experience will come along and verify this is right.

I have a question about the card for those that are familiar. I see online about the 20,000 bonus for the card. I had this card before, but I cancelled it... if I reapplied, would I be eligible still for the promotion?

That is how it plays out, you also have to pay $5 per ticket to cover the mandatory government fees so you would need to take on $20 to your current total.

As with purchasing of points, you can buy them in $1,000 increments but you have to buy at least $2,000 worth.

To get extra points you can also sign up for the Rapid Rewards Dining program. If you happen to dine out often, it could add up quickly. You get 3 points per $1 you spend at participating restaurants, and then get points for doing a review on the restaurant as well. I just signed up because I figured what the heck. It didn't cost anything and I might as well earn points if I'm dining out anyway. Here's the link:

both times ours posted within a week of paying the bill. the only thing that took longer was the 300 point bonus for writing a rapid rewards dining review. the 3x points from the restaurant bill posted immediately after I paid the credit card bill, but the bonus points have not and its been several weeks.

the fine print says points could take 6-8 weeks to post.

I applied for the SW Visa in the Orlando airport on 5/4. I received my cards in the mail on 5/16 and used it for a gas purchase that evening. The first statement cut on 5/27 and my 20,000 points as well as the other points I earned through purchases posted to my Rapid Rewards acct at SW on the same day! I didn't have to wait to pay the bill which isn't due until 6/24.
