SW credit card with free flights- can both my DH and I get one?

DH got his SW card last year with the 50,000 pts. and we used them on our trip last month. It was so wonderful to have 4 free flights!

Anyway, can I apply for one also or is it one per family? Are they still giving out 50,000 pts.?

I was able to book 2 R/T tickets for my DD and myself to go in Nov and 2 one way flights for my dh and I to tampa out of Islip, ny to Fl. We had the 50,000 points. So 6 tickets all together. The card cost $69.00 - Yay, best deal I ever made.

You should be able to see the points on your Rapid Rewards account. When you book a flight on SW, they show both the cash price as well as the points price.

I am flying to florida next month but I can book alliegant for $215 for two RT so I think I would get better use of the points to go to Cali.... But questions:
1. Once I apply and get accepted and charge something to get the 50,000 how long until those points expire? Again, it will be a year until my cali trip.
2. Does the card have to stay active until I use the points? So I charge something once and then NEVER use it (but I wont close the account until after the trip)

That "partner earning activity" can be RR dining done at a participating restaurant and paid for with any registered CC, a stay at a partner hotel that is booked thru SWA's link, a car rental booked thru the same link, or an online purchase made thru their shopping portal (similar to shopping thru a rewards website like ebates or mypoints).

2. The card does not have to remain active until you use the points. The points go right into your RR account, which is separate from the Chase credit card account. But you will be charged an annual fee on your anniversary unless you cancel the card before then.

Wow, I didn't know this. Do they remind you before your 24 months are up that you need to do this? I would hate to lose points. Thanks

If I am reading right, the credit card itself is a Rapid Rewards partner, so all you have to do is use the card to keep your points from expiring. We signed up for the one that was $99 per year, so we get RR points equal to that when we are charged the fee. Works for me!

DH and I each got our own SW card, back when they gave out 2 RT (or 4 one way) flights per card.

I would not have thought of applying for 2 separate cards, until I read the tip on DIS!

We used our points for our trip to California. For our dates, in January, it was 13,020 points each to fly into Orange County airport; LAX would've only been 8,040 points. Round trip for 3 from Chicago to LAX would've been paid for completely out of the 50,000 bonus points!

We really prefer Orange County, so we spent the extra points for the convenience, if we would've been paying cash, we probably would've gone with LAX because of the significant price difference.

Your first question has been answered, but I wanted to add regarding your second question. As long as you already paid the first annual fee, you might as well keep the account open for the first year and rack up points if you can. They go into your Southwest Rapid Rewards account, so even when you close the credit card account before the 2nd years fees are due, you still have the points. We've been paying with our major purchases with this credit card and the points really rack up. We don't even use our Disney card anymore!

The annual fee is typically charged on your very first statement, to avoid people getting the card for the miles and then immediately canceling.

I have a quick question... If because I only have a part-time job (that doesn't pay awesomely ) would my husband and I still be able to apply separately or just together? Also, how often does SW have a 50,000 points promotion? Thx!

My husband and I each have a card. We run all of the household expenses that we can through the cards and even after the initial bonus points we manage to get at least a trip each per year out of the points earned on purchases. Well worth the annual fee for us.

The trick is to pay it off every month! We do all the expenses in quicken as they occur so when the bill comes we know what we will owe.
