Do they take everything out of your carryons and purses or just run them through a machine or look through them?

I will have a tote sized carryon with (1) change of clothes for me and DH and one quart sized baggie with mini-toothbrushes(for all)toothpaste/floss and I will also have my Baggallini filled with tickets, wallet, digital camera, etc....

DS will have a backpack with (1) change of clothes and (2) books and DD will have her backback with her DVD case with player and movies in it and (1) change of clothes.

Only if they see something they can't make out.

Now they can always and do have the right to empty ang search but most of the time only let it go through the X-Ray sometimes will do a vapor search run a swap over the zippers handles and such and the analize it .

They do want your ziploc baggie of liquids to be taken out of your carryon prior to the xray. Other than that, they just run everything through the xray machine. They do make you take off your shoes and xray those too, so something that slips on/off is appreciated to quicken the process. If you have a stroller, that needs to be folded and xrayed too. If the kids carry anything outside of their carryon such as a blankie, pillow, or stuffed animal... you guess it, that goes on the xray belt too. Remember to keep your ID handy, you will need it more than once and don't want to be digging through your bag to find it each time. Don't carry a lot in your pockets because you will need to empty them at the xray machine too.

Have fun!

just wanted to add that the last time we flew we had to remove video cameras out of the cases and have those scanned too. Not sure if that's new or not ~ it was the first time we took a video camera with us.
edited to add....I use usually take a roll of quarters with us(for tolls going to Port Canaveral and/or laundry) so if you have that, take those out of the carry on also. I had to have my bag pulled apart one time because they couldn't tell what it was from the x-ray. And of course it was all the way at the bottom of the bag :rolleyes2

Odd, but they do make this distinction:

Video cameras that use tape cartridges rather than digital media need to be removed from your carry-ons and placed separately in the bins along with baggies of liquids and laptops. They don't care about the camcorders that use DVDs or memory card media.

I just want to add to keep you boarding passes out with you. You will need to show your boarding pass and ID before you get to the x-ray belts and you will need to show your boarding pass when you walk through the metal detector. :)

Yep, and if you have film cameras you need to keep those out and keep any extra film out as well. Also do not put film or tapes in checked luggage. The xray machines can damage the film and/or tapes and the airport/airline is not liable for any damage that may be caused.

DH has a big backpack for all his professional photo equipment. He has always had to empty it out going through security.

I will have to keep the quarter roll thing in mind. I plan on taking one with me for the panny machines and laundry!

that's weird becasue our video camera uses dvd's not tapes :confused3

They probably can't tell just by looking at the camera case what kind of media it uses, so to be on the safe side I'm guessing they ask to have it taken out.

one quart sized baggie with mini-toothbrushes(for all)toothpaste/floss

Just wanted to mention, I think the toothpaste (which is a liquid/gel) might have to be in a separate baggie than the toothbrushes and floss. Also, remember the toothpaste will need to be under 3.4oz

Yes, toothpaste is "liquid" All liquids must be in a quart size zip top baggie. You get one baggie per passenger.....

Actually, I was commenting more on only putting liquids/gels in the 3-1-1 bag. Ie. I wouldn't put the toothbrush into the bag with the toothpaste. Not sure if it'd be an issue at security but figured I'd throw it out there lol. :)

there's no reason the toothbrush couldn't go in the bag with toothpaste (or other liquids) There's nothing that says only liquids go in the quart size bag. I have gone through security a number of times with DD's medications in one quart size bag and our toothbrushes and toothpaste in another bag with out any problems at all.

Ahh, good to know. Like I said, I wasn't sure. Thanks for the info :)
