I just wanted to share this funny little story. Well, I was amused by it anyway.

A couple of weeks ago we were flying home from MCO. A good 20-30 minutes before we would even be starting to line up to board this man stands up and takes his place at the A1 position. He was nicely dressed in business casual attire with his A1 boarding card clearly displayed for all to see in his shirt pocket.

So when the rest of us...less than A1er's get on I look over and there he is sitting across the aisle from me. Now I would have thought that perhaps he would take a seat in the first or second row or perhaps a nice exit row seat...he was rather tall. No...he's a good 8-10 rows back and in the middle seat.:rotfl2:

The only thing I can guess is that he never got the A1 before and was really excited about it :confused3

My guess is he was saving a seat (or seats) for family members with higher BPs. He took the middle seat and his traveling companion(s) took the window and/or aisle seat. Saving a seat in the exit aisle can lead to "issues". Taking a middle seat and saving the seat next to you 8-10 rows back isn't generally an issue.

No...he was alone. I saw him when we first got to the gate. He was seated behind where I was. He was hard to miss...tall and wearing a bright coloured shirt.

Was he alone the entire flight? It's possible his other family members had C BPs and boarded after you.

Unless the flight was very full this might have been a strategy designed to get an entire row to yourself. Take the window or aisle seat and a couple might take the other two seats. Take a middle seat in row 8 and a couple will keep walking to the back of the plane until they find two seats together. No longer two seats together the couple is likely to just grab 2 seats near the back of the plane and not walk back up.

edited to add--I guess it's possible that's his "lucky seat" and he pays for business select so he can get it. I think the other two possibilities are a lot more likely.

I can't say for 100% sure but every time I saw hime he was alone. Like i said he was hard to miss...a bit unusual looking.

His boarding pass likely matches his type "A" personality.;) He must like to be first and like lots of control.

He may have initially taken the middle seat as a strategry. By taking the middle it ups his odds that only a single person will join him in the row, hence leaving the option for an open middle seat and hopes that no family with small children decide to take the two seats next to him. It is a calculated risk.

The flight was sold out and had been for over a month....it was the end of our spring break.

You mean that he sat with no one next to him for the entire flight? And he was tall?

If so, there is your answer. He sat in an undesirable seat position in order to try to keep the seat next to him empty so that he could put his legs sideways into the space.

As to "displaying" his boarding card, lots of people do that, especially those with that particular number. The GA's need to find that person in order to let the FA's know that preboarding is over and open seat selection has begun, because preboarders may not sit in the exit rows. (It also helps dissuade line-cutters from trying to claim that boarding position in hopes that the GA will let them through anyway in the interest of efficient boarding -- something I have witnessed more times than I can count.)

No...every seat was filled.

I guess maybe this is not amusing to other people.....I did not mean to start a debate as to why he sat in the middle seat. I suppose you had to be there. I just got a bit of a laugh at seeing this guy standing in the boarding line 20 minutes before everyone else....as if you still had to camp out to board the plane......and with his boarding card practically pinned to his chest. To me it was as if he wanted everyone to see him and notice his A1. :confused3

and he was doing penance for his team not making the hockey playoffs for the 10th straight year. go sabres.

:rotfl2: how did you know we were flying to BUF???? Where you Mr. A1?

but a leaf fan would be a good guess. a1 boarding pass ...it's lent and he must do penance for the poor play of his beloved leafs. which is why the middle seat was chosen. go sabres.

maybe he works for the leafs and was looking for resorts and nearby golf courses for the leafs soon to be off season vacation..hey wait the leafs will be staying at the disney swan hotel. (swan song =leafs ).
