Suzy and Perla Skip the Lines Again: From roughing it to the lap of luxury

I'm really enjoying reading your TR.:thumbsup2

Your pre-trip organization, planning and packing is very impressive - and I love how you set up your camp site!

Looking forward to more stories from your time @ the Dolphin!

I meant to say hey in the last quote thing but it didn't pop yours up. Anyway, thanks!

We just camped this weekend and because of all of you and my guilt in misleading you I timed how long it took us to breakdown. Literally from the moment I said, "Let's breakdown," to the time we were in our van was 45 minutes. So we are quick. My girls are able to stay focused and not need much direction and Donald is an amazing packer (have I mentioned this? :rotfl:) and I'm a hard worker and fairly organized.

And there were no fights. So there ya go. Plus when we got home we unloaded everything out of the van within a half hour and the next day we all worked together to get it all put back where it belongs. I think we could be even faster at it if we did it more often. We get better, more efficient, and less fighting every single time.

Sorry this Dolphin time is big on promise short on delivery. Don't cha hate when life interrupts Dis-ing?

DHS could be a one day park for us, a full day, but just the one day. But it isn't. Because of the show schedule. I realize that they have actors and complications and the shows are expensive. I TRY to be reasonable in my expectations. But WHY oh WHY are Beauty and the Beast and Indiana Jones scheduled for the exact same times always? Why? And why does Lights, Motors, Action have to be at 1:20 or 4:30? This makes it nearly impossible to see these three things in one day and do anything else but Toy Story. Who is with me on this? If you hit TSM, the see little Mermaid then ToT, RnR and then do Beauty and the Beast at 11:30. You then cannot make either the 12:45 nor the 2:00 Indiana Jones and still do LMA at 1:20. Let's say you do Indiana at 2:00 (and eat lunch in between) you then must choose between American Idol and LMA. Sigh.

So our strategy is always to try and go for a short day first and pick off a few things and one major show. Then we can go back for our real day of DHS without the stress of minute by minute scheduling. So that was this day. A short day.

But even if you will only be in the park for a short time, they must make sure you have no fire arms nor contraband (cause terrorists always wear matching tshirts with their names on them):

We then had to scan our tickets which never really worked:

PHOTOPASS!
Photo0658FourBySix.jpg

And then we did a mad dash to LUNCH! I cannot remember what happened to some of our people. Suzy? Any clue? But somewhere between Photopass and lunch we lost a few and so Boo and I had time to watch Darth Vader while they all caught up.
IMG_1466.jpg

Darth Vader is a very tricky character for Boo. He is clearly scary. And she hates him. But she also loves him and gets really excited when she sees him because he is clearly cool. It's like a sick fascination. Her face pretty much tells the story.

Before long we were all together and HUNGRY and we had those CS burning a hole in our pockets. We love this eatery. Suzy gets the grilled vegetable sandwich every time and EVERY time thanks us all for letting her go here. It's not really a hardship but she's still very appreciative.

There is indoor air conditioned seating here. But in March it was lovely and this outdoor seating on the non-Darth Vader side is peaceful:
IMG_1467.jpg

There was time to take this photo because despite there being only a short line it was SLOW this day. I felt like my food never came. I struck up a conversation with the other people waiting with me, however, and the time quickly passed. Even still, though, when you have young kids like mine you can't fully get caught up because you know they are back at the table waiting crankily.

It seemed like we ate a long time. But we didn't. Because we only got to the park at 12:30 and we were easily in our LMA seats by 1:15. It just felt slow and peaceful. Well, as peaceful as eating french fries with a bunch kids ever feels. I'll change that and say it was drama free which for a mom is super awesome.

We quickly used the potty that is right there and marched ourselves over to the LMA. Here there was mass confusion. I haven't done this show in awhile as I'm not a huge fan and Boo would have hated it so I've just sat outside and waited. Therefore I did not know they had changed the entrance nor the stroller parking. Families were lost all over the place. I can't put my finger on it but my (TIP TIME) advice would be to stay together when you park your stroller and then move together to the seats. Normally it's more efficient to just have one person park the stroller while the rest wait off to the side. But, I don't know why, there was just so much commotion that once separated we had a stressful time reconnecting here.

Also, there was no jet ski scene making the show shorter, the movie make no sense, and the whole thing seem kinda lame.
IMG_5088.jpg

The best part was unlike in August and September where all I can focus on is how hot I am in here, in March is was VERY pleasant:

IMG_5089.jpg

IMG_5090.jpg

Goodbye Herbie! We love you!
IMG_5091.jpg

Boo barely handled this show this time. It's SO loud. My arms ached afterwards and Donald tried to help me as I looked at him in desperation but there was no way Boo was leaving Mommy so he settled for taking a picture of us:
IMG_0972.jpg

I'm not sure who took this picture but I think I need it at work. I recently had a job switch and I'm over men who are in a fairly dangerous job and my FIRST day on the job I had a guy go to the emergency room. So much for me being the safety patrol. Disney just holds all the answers, doesn't it?

IMG_1468.jpg

You see all these people? They enter and exit together. A LOT of people. Donald was gone again as we exited and we couldn't see him. Thank goodness for cell phones but you can see we all look a tiny bit lost.
IMG_5095.jpg

Here they are:
IMG_5096.jpg

We were a little hot after this and Jack-Jack has recently discovered the little mermaid so we headed off to the voyage. We were some of the first in the holding tank which you may recall I hate since it means we'll have to longest wait. But this was our bonus day so wait we shall and we plopped down on the floor and proceeded to sit there for our max waiting limit of 10 minutes:

IMG_5097.jpg

Great seats, again. We really scored this time on our theater seats:
IMG_5098.jpg

TIP TIME! You can't always tell which doors will have center/front/back seats. But you CAN always hold on to your family members and not let them barge in as the first people into the theater. It is ALWAYS best to be in the middle of the pack or the back of the pack in Disney theaters (with the exception of Disney Junior.) With the rule of moving all the way to the end of the row, the first people in often have the worst seats. Hold back. The Biblical rule of: "The first shall be last and the last shall be first" works great when entering Disney theaters.

If you have never been to Disney World, I think the Little Mermaid is a must see. So if you've never been please ignore my next comments.

OH MY GOODNESS! This little mermaid was LAME. She had a terrible voice, was not attractive, was not as thin as me (and you know what I look like), and was not graceful. And I do not believe for a minute that the Prince Eric actor cared for her one bit. Ugh! Why? Who? Who cast this girl? I was cuter and have a better voice and let me tell you, that is NOT a compliment to me. The only thing you can say about my voice is I can mostly carry a tune. Which is to say this girl couldn't. That's not good. It was so very bad. And it was spring break. Put your A game in during peak crowds, people. A game. Not the D-list.

This is why it's a not to be missed:
IMG_1235.jpg

It's cool puppets, really neat laser water effects, and generally great singing. {{shudder}} Oh Ariel, why? Anyone remember how in the movie she's known for her singing? Yeah....

And there my uploaded photos abruptly end. Stay tuned for my promised Dolphin review and the best (for some) and worst (for some) restaurant on Disney property.

So I have to tell you that I have been so inspired by your matching T-shirts that I tried making some for my family. Perhaps I got carried away. But we're doing a huge family reunion (9 people) in the parks in June and I thought it would be cute if at least the kids matched--good for pictures and easier to keep an eye on them, right? So I made a set of shirts for all the kids, but then I got a better idea, tried another set, and then another, and ultimately ended up with 5 sets total. I sent them off to the extended family, sooooo proud of myself...and they aren't into it. The kids seemed sort of excited about it, but the other mom, not so much. And I wasn't even trying to convince the grown-ups to wear the shirts, just the kids! I wish my extended family was more like yours...

DHS is tough with all the shows. We also have to try to fit in Disney Junior. We're also going during Star Wars weekend so there's no way we're going to fit everything in. I don't think I've seen Indiana Jones since our honeymoon and we've only seen LMA once (that's one we'll be skipping in the heat of June FOR SURE).

Can't wait for you Dolphin review (we leave in 9 days)

Love the matching green shirts, especially that shade of green.

Love the expression on Boo's face. She looks so excited to see you, as if you hadn't spent the last 20/30 minutes holding her ears. :rotfl:

Love the tips, they are fabulous as always. Now I have to ask a question... Is Indiana Jones inside or out? And Beauty and the Beast is outside, right? I really want to see some shows when we go in June but I don't want to fry in the heat to see one either.

Yeah, I was actually not into it at all before either. I probably was the least into it the first year. My advice is to have your family match and they will find it SO easy to see you they may want to do it too. Maybe just ask her to bring the tshirts and see after the first day if she can see the value. The girlfriend who is going with us was hesitant at first but once I explained that no one will think she is with us since we'll all be in matching tees and it'll make getting through lines together much easier she was totally in. Plus I told her she could design one more and we'd all wear it one day. She LOVED that and we spent 2 hours designing it.

Good work, though. As you clearly saw, it's addicting!

We did Disney Junior this time too, since we had the two days we could squeeze it all in. But this upcoming trip we are skipping Disney Junior. Thank goodness.

I'm gonna do my Dolphin review hopefully tonight. Just got home from work and need to clean my house and grocery shop and then I'm all yours!

Love the matching green shirts, especially that shade of green.

Indiana Jones is outside. They have fans but the show has fire in it. And on a 100 degree day I almost want to die. No joke. It can get HOT in there. Fortunately, you can bring ice cream in and eat it inside. But ice cream only takes you so far when a big fire is burning in your face on a 100 degree day.

B&B is also outside. If you get there 15 minutes early and not at the last minute it is totally shady and seems cooler than Indiana Jones. But the bleacher seating in the way back is FAR away, in full sun and miserable. So don't push it timing wise.

And since they don't start until 11:30 it's heat of the day for all the shows. But really, B&B isn't too bad. And if you have ToT or RnR FP's you can get all sweaty at BnB and dash into AC the second it's over.

Hey there!! I've been a travel agent for 18 years and Disney is my speciality. I'm just amazed how much you know and how much you love Disney. I've been there many times as well but I found myself reading all of your trip reports (all the way back to 2007!) every day for the last week! I've only taken my family there twice since I always go for work.....I have a 12 year old boy and a 9 year old girl. We went back in 2007 and now we're and now we're going this August. We're staying at Windsor Hills in a 2 bedroom condo and can't wait!!

Here's my question.....when will be seeing your June pretrip report?? I look every day to see if you started it yet. I can't wait!! :dance3:

:love::love: Thanks for the high praise! People tell Suzy and I we should be Disney travel agents but as with anything, when it's a hobby it's fun. When it's a business it's not always. I would hate to lose the fun. :sad2: And I'm a little busy already!

Before we were Disney freaks I still loved travel. At first I just followed my parents around and they planned everything. I took full control of my first vacation a year before I got pregnant with Mulan. My parents, Donald, and I decided to go to Italy. Suzy already had Charming so she was doomed to stay at home. ;) I took a full year to plan. It was before the internet was what it is, though it did exist and I did use it for what it was worth. But I decided my first strategy would be to learn Italian. :lmao: And I did. I got an Italian tutor and everything. That way I could figure out EXACTLY what we were doing before we ever got there.

That trip was AMAZING! My parents fell in love with me all over again. And I discovered that (other than the airport losing my luggage ) vacations go MUCH smoother for my family when one person (well, ok, ME) plans out every single thing. For example I had learned in my reading that two things stressed people more than others: 1) getting lost in Venice. 2) wandering around museums having no idea the significance of what you are looking at and being bored to death. I dealt with these by 1) memorizing the Venice map by looking at it every night before bed for 6 months (we never got lost, not once) and 2) buying a Rick Steves book called Mona Lisa Winks and reading it as the official tour guide outloud to my family as we walked around the museums.

The experience changed me forever. And changed Donald's expectations wholeheartedly. As I'm a VERY flexible person. So to everyone else it sounds commando. But by knowing everything I can switch gears on a dime. Hot and sweaty? There's air conditioning and ice cream one block over. Hungry? I read about this super cool eatery right here. I even found before we left the only restaurant at the time in Rome that had margaritas and chips and salsa (Mexican is Donald's fave) and memorized the route from our hotel to it. This made Donald SO happy we went there twice. That's right, I'm so flexible I was willing to go to Mexican twice when in ROME! And enjoyed myself and wasn't bitter.

It also made it possible for me to travel with Suzy and Milo as the year before we had all gone to France and I had spontaneously talked everyone into visiting Geneva, Switzerland. This spontaneous trip almost made Milo never speak to me again and certainly never want to travel with me again. Lesson LEARNED!

Anyway, I think I have already told these stories on here but after years of trip reporting I get confused what you all know. And as significant as every Disney trip has been to our gaining Disney knowledge, our other travel experience has been just as valuable in knowing what we all like and don't AND in helping us appreciate just how special Disney is in the world of tourism.

Whew, bet that was more than you bargained for!!!

To answer your question, I have a 250 serving pink fondant and silver wedding cake that I am making for a Sunday wedding. In addition to the 40-60 hours I'm working and all the other stuff I've been whining about I'm doing. So Suzy, I, and our girlfriend have agreed that Memorial day begins our planning/attention to our June trip. By midnight on Memorial Day, My June TR will be begun. And that's a promise!!!

Thanks for the response! You really amaze me with raising 3 kids, working a full time plus job, cake making, and all of your trip reporting details and pictures. My marketing department at my travel agency does a great dining reservation "menu" that is great to keep track of all yoiur dining reservations. It's also a great scrapbooking piece to remember your trip! If your interested, you're welcome to email me your dining reservations for June (place, time, confirmation number) and I'll make one up for you. I do it for all my clients and they really love it. Feel free to email me anytime and I can get it done for you.

I'm so looking forward to your finish to your March trip and also to the start of your June trip.!!

Theresa

Awww, thanks! :flower3:

I know, everybody, I said I'd do the Dolphin review and THEN the next chapter but I'm gonna go with the pictures I already have uploaded. So this chapter, THEN the review.

I got behind on your TR, but am all caught up now.

LMA doesn't hold a lot of attraction for my family and I haven't seen it in years, so I enjoyed your pictures. It doesn't look like it has changed much in a long time.

Sorry to hear about the poor vocal abilities of Ariel. That would make it really difficult to enjoy that show. We saw it for the first time last year and I wish I had done a little more research to know about the water. My 1 year old fell asleep while we were waiting for the show to start and the water was NOT a good way to wake him up. Oops.

We are thinking about the Dolphin for a future trip. We have eaten there in the past, but never stayed there so I am looking forward to your review.

OK, here's the truth. I don't have notes from here on and whenever we all split up no one takes photos but me. Cursed people who think vacations are for enjoying and forget all about poor me trying to reconstruct the whole thing months later. How dare they?

So now my entire family is sitting here looking at pictures and trying desperately to remember what on earth we did in the holes left in our memories?

Hmmmm....

This hole was not that big of a hole, maybe just 20 minutes. I THINK we went to the bathroom. Here is a picture. It is the most nondescript wall ever and I don't know which bathroom is it? Anyone? Could this be a game? Which bench at which bathroom? Or was it just a random bench some random place?

I'll tell you this. We went from Little Mermaid to Sounds Dangerous. That I know. Where we pitstopped in between is the ambiguous part.

IMG_1469.jpg

It's a cute picture. It was taken at DHS. And there is no story whatsoever to go with it. Sorry.

I also don't remember meeting this Little Einstein. But I have photos and my whole family claims I was there. Plus we have photos from Donald and my cameras. Whoops. Guess Leo didn't have much of an impact on me.

IMG_0977.jpg

You can be guaranteed there was almost no line here. Had I stood in a line, I'd remember it better.

But I DO remember VERY well the Pixar Parade. I had wanted to see this in September but it was so very hot that we bailed at the last minute and went back for a rest in the air conditioning of our room. I was sad as I heard and saw the tops of the floats from the bus stop.

So I was happy when people decided to go see Sounds Dangerous at the perfect time for me to set up shop outside and see the parade. I  parades and my family is mostly indifferent.

Be prepared, I took a bunch of photos. I'll try to hold back.

Boo is always talking about the Ladybug Dance at Disney World and I'm always saying there ISN'T a ladybug dance at Disney World. Here, finally, is proof that there are ladybugs dancing at Disney World. One point Boo, Perla zero.

TIP TIME! This photo is out of order to show you where we were sitting. These are good seats. It's between American Idol and Sounds Dangerous, where the scary bust of Oprah Winfrey is. See the cement wall there? You can't sit on that, they are very vigorous in policing this, as you can see it would be delightful to be there in the shade. Our seats were in the sun but if you suck it up and sit there in the sun then the sun is behind you. Whereas if you opt to sit on the other side you are facing the sun making it less enjoyable. If you get there early enough (we never stake out seats before 10 minutes before parades) you can have that shady spot where you see those other people there on the inside portion of the wall. Clearly, this is ideal. But we just can't "waste" that much time sitting around so we opt to pop in last minute and just deal with the sunshine and heat.

IMG_5103.jpg

See? We're just this side of shade. That girl next to Boo is in shade. We just took turns going and looking in the shady little tiny shop behind us while the other parent saved the spot with the kids.

Then the other direction is Indiana Jones:

IMG_5115.jpg

There has been much complaining on here the last two years about Disney's new parades being lame. I never have seen the DHS parade so I have no comment. I liked this parade. The MK parade is a bit lamer as they shortened it so they can manipulate the crowds by spontaneously having Move It Shake It Celebrate It or whatever the little "where did this parade come from at some weird time?" parade is called. Personally, I would never waste more than 20 minutes waiting on a parade other than the MK night time parade.

My reasoning? You can always see the parades from a quieter spot. You simply can. You can watch the parades as you walk by them.

TIP TIME! Just because you see a crowd does not mean you have to rush over and participate. Why do people do this? Just because you see people lining up for a 3:00 parade at 2:00 does not make it an emergency for you. You can see we had great seats for this parade, we did not have to shove anyone out of the way to get them, and we acquired them 5 minutes before the parade started, but the were OFF the main thoroughway. That's the tip. No need to see parades where they begin. They will still be performing at the END of the parade too. I'd say we got these seats at 2:55 and the beginning of the parade reached us at 3:10.

When we were done we headed into Sounds Dangerous sound area which we had completely to ourselves. I sat my booty down on the floor and chilled. The kids said Sounds Dangerous was just okay and Mulan said she wished she'd done the parade. She's 10. So if a 10 year old girl would rather watch Toy Story characters than Sounds Dangerous it might not be that good. It's been years since I saw it and I enjoyed it but clearly not ridiculously so since I haven't been back.

Everyone did enjoy this giant room, however.
IMG_5117.jpg

IMG_5118.jpg

This is a nice cool area and you don't have to do the show to play with this sound stage stuff.

We are thinking about the Dolphin for a future trip. We have eaten there in the past, but never stayed there so I am looking forward to your review.

LMA hadn't changed for the better, that's for sure. However they recently added Lightening McQueen so it may hold more appeal now for the younger set of boys and if they add the jet ski scene back in it is a genuinely good show, if you're into that kind of thing. Personally, I'd just as soon watch paint dry as learn anything at all about cars but I know I'm certainly in the minority on that if NASCAR is any indication.

I think you'd enjoy the Dolphin. As soon as I get those photos up, my review is all yours.

We chose Dolphin for two reasons: price and location. Because Fort Wilderness is an MK resort we decided to do MK and AK from there. And then wanted an Epcot/DHS resort for our second half of the trip. However Disney Epcot resorts are cost prohibitive. And believe me you, Suzy and I have researched all about DVC rental of points. But for 11 people, it's still nuts cost wise.

So Suzy had read about a teacher discount at the Dolphin. Milo, as a professor, would qualify, we assumed. So I called and got my all options. True confessions, I may have called 3 times in a row as we kept thinking of more things to ask. After a fairly quick conference we opted to rent the last Dolphin 2 bedroom executive suite available.

Here is how the costs broke down in our decision, it was a peak week so we knew we'd have sticker shock:

These are the internet prices we started with:
The Dolphin reg. room $262.00 per night.
The Yacht Club for $326.25
Renting DVC points 2 bedroom villa: 1 bedroom studio & 1 bedroom room $329.00
DTD resort Lake Buena Vista $158.86
Bonnet Creek share 2 bedroom $120.99
Port Orleans $180.00
ASM Suite $225.00
ASM $127.00

After my three phone Dolphin phone calls I had the following choices:
Dolphin discount choices:
Dolphin Executive Suite 2 bedroom, 3 bath: $618.00 per night +$10.00 resort fee. AAA percentage off would be $506.00
Teacher rate: $169.00 (plus $10.00)
Alcove: $244.00/regular (plus $10.00)

The teacher rate was the same as AAA for our dates.

The allure of having 3 bathrooms and a kitchen area made us pick the $506.00 suite and split it.

With our camping savings we felt we could swing the $250.00 per family for three nights to have our dream location and extra space.

Here is the central room:
P3250234.jpg

When we walked in the door, which is right out of sight there next to the kitchen. Also right there is a big bathroom and a giant closet. This whole floor area was big tiles.

The kitchen was a college size fridge and a microwave and a bar sink. But the extra space of having a "real" kitchen was quite useful.

Then you see the dining room. This was a great table and and office area. And with this and the living room area we had plenty of space for all 11 of us to eat breakfast, pizza, and hang out all together.

And here is the dining table (pizza review later ;)) which was everything you need in a dining table and more.
IMG_1319.jpg

And this is standing facing Suzy and Milo's bedroom, which was a two queen bed room. The dining room is directly to my left and the living room to the right.

P3260237.jpg

This is directly to the left of the dining table. We squeezed a cot in here and this was Mulan and Boo's bed. It gave them a little piece of privacy and Mulan Loved it.

Sorry these pictures are so lame but I never did take photos just of the room for the TR. Sorry.

My review of the actual bedrooms is thus: They are pretty roomy. We had an extra cot squished into ours so that made it not as roomy but even still we were able totally walk around so that tells you how nicely sized they were.

Not so for my bathroom. I did not think the getting ready area was roomy nor nicely laid out. There is a toilet/bath area with a door. Then there is a sink area. The sink, however, was in the corner of this area and I thought it was awkward. And there is only one sink.

There was, though, a bar area that also had a mirror outside of the bathroom area altogether and this is where I did the girl's hair.

The beds were just as amazing as you hear they are.
This could be you:
IMG_0384.jpg

I give this 2 bedroom executive suite 8 out of 10 stars. It was worth my $250.00 per night. The kitchen could have been better. The sink area could have been better. And it was luxurious but so understated, nothing WOWED me. So it lost 2 stars for that.

Now for the pool:
IMG_1259.jpg

There was plenty of seating. And I found the seating comfortable.

And the beach area was cool. We didn't spend any time at all on this beach but we could have. We just didn't really have buckets and sand toys and only had limited pool time at the Dolphin.
IMG_5239.jpg

They had these cool floaties they provided for kids at the towel handing out area.
IMG_5238.jpg

This picture of the kiddie pool is really nice. But when I was actually there I felt like this area was lame. To be fair, I have no reason for this. It was just my feeling. It's in the shade, so that's nice, but where is the fun here? It's just so boring.
IMG_5237.jpg

The waterfall was neat and the bathroom was over there. In the heat of summer it would be nice to have such deep shade to retreat to:
IMG_1258.jpg

I give the pool 8 out of 10. There was nothing spectacular but it was huge and very nice. The beach behind was alluring. My negatives were that I found it hard to find the towels, there was no sign and they aren't for the taking, you have to ask where they are. Also, like everywhere at the Dolphin (I'll talk about this later) there were people in business suits about. I found this awkward. Finally, I may have given it 9 out of 10 but there were mean people in this pool that kind of ruined the peaceful nature for the kids and I'm thinking that isn't a rarity. I think when business suit people go swimming, kids annoy them. And that is disconcerting at Disney World.

The boat dock was between the Dolphin and Swan. It was convenient and wonderful. Easy and relaxing to DHS or Epcot. 10 of 10.
IMG_1478.jpg

As you well know, we walk. And for some totally unknown reason they had square water cut outs around the wings of the Dolphin. This meant that to walk to the Boardwalk we had to do a stupid square walk. This was stupid. 5 of 10 to whomever decided guests would enjoy walking in a square.
P3230162.jpg

See? You have to walk around this rectangle of water to get from our room to the Boardwalk. The end of this was a service entrance so you couldn't just walk through the building. Who thought this was smart?
IMG_0381.jpg

P3230163.jpg

I have no idea what the point of the balloons in the lobby were. Are they sails? Hmmm... Honestly, I never really figured out the theme of the decor at the Dolphin at all. But it was wowing. Definitely wowing.
IMG_0382.jpg

And this was a very nice touch:
IMG_5145.jpg

I give the lobby and the staff 9 out of 10. I've heard people say they don't feel like they are at Disney when they are at the Dolphin. I think the staff here was every bit as good as any true Disney resort. They were exceptional. And compared to non-Disney resorts/hotels I've stayed at it was very, very nice. But the theme was ambiguous and that is a not-Disney thing. So only in comparison to cruise ships and Disney does it lose a star.

The best part of the Dolphin? Location.
IMG_1482.jpg

10 of 10 stars for location.

Now to talk about things I don't have pictures of.

People in suits:
EVERYWHERE at the Dolphin there are business people attending business stuff. They have absolutely no interest in Disney World and may not even know that the Dolphin is on Disney property. They are truly interested in whatever they are learning at whatever conference they are attending. I realize this is shocking. But it is true.

Being that I am a business person and spend a fair portion of life dressed up, I wasn't too bothered. But be warned.

The layout is slightly confusing. And once in one wing you cannot switch to another. The elevators are individual to each wing and not interchangable. You have to learn landmarks to get to your room. Much more like a cruise ship than a Disney resort layout. So had we been there a week and utilized all the Dolphin had to offer this would have been fine. But in just 3 days, it was a tiny bit hard to take because any time I wanted to go to an area I hadn't been before I had to try and find my way and signage and maps were not available.

Overall, I give the Dolphin 8 of 10 stars. I have a feeling Donald would rate it lower as the business people bothered him more than me. He didn't like being reminded of home on vacation. But the beds, the luxury, the LOCATION, the price for the location, the wonderful staff, the more than adequate pool makes me say, for $169.00 for a regular room at peak week prices, BARGAIN!!!! If it's $169.00 for this or $169.00 for POR, I would pick the Dolphin.

But be aware, you can't buy a package, no DDP. In the future that will be the fight, I'm sure.

All in all, I would definitely stay here again. And if you've already booked it, you know who you are, ;) I'll be jealous of you in a week!!! Have fun!

The kitchen was a college size fridge and a microwave and a bar sink. But the extra space of having a "real" kitchen was quite useful.

Seriously?! Only a mini fridge and microwave in the executive suite? I would have expected better.

LOVE this picture!!!! Precious. :lovestruc

Still loving your trip report. It was nice to read about the Dolphin. Don't know that we will ever stay there, even with the teacher discount, but it looks beautiful. Just not very family vacation friendly with the stuffy convention people.

:cool2: Great pics of the Pixar parade. I'm sad that we won't get to see that when we go in June. Not sure we will still be in any of the parks for the early afternoon parades though. But I am looking forward to Spectro at MK.

I know about the fridge! We didn't need a bigger fridge but it would have been annoying had I been thinking something different for this trip.

Chamring took that picture of Boo and Jack. He put them to sleep on his own. More about that later ;).

It was a lovely resort and maybe at a different time it would have been less conventioners, I'm not sure. I'm sure there are plenty of families here somewhere but it's a GIANT resort and we almost never had anyone in line for us for the boats which I found odd, certainly not many families. But later when I talk about the Boardwalk you will see I loved this area of Disney SO much that I will willingly stay at a convention resort to get the chance to be on the Boardwalk.

And I know about those parades in summer. SO HOT! Sorry, but it's just too hot for me to sit on a sidewalk in the sunshine at 3 o'clock in mid summer in Florida. NO THANKS!

Did you ever get the explanation as to why the Dolphin Hotel has Fish on top of it instead of Dolphins?

Did you ever get the explanation as to why the Dolphin Hotel has Fish on top of it instead of Dolphins?

In actuality, I'm kind of morally against the Dolphin being so gigantic and being able to be seen from Epcot. I don't think Disney himself would have approved of this.

But at the time it happened the Disney family was in danger of losing Disney altogether and hired Eisner to do what needed done. So though I wish it hadn't been approved, I think the back story is not that well thought out, they are pretty and whimsical.

You can read an opinion about this subject here:
http://land.allears.net/blogs/jackspence/2010/09/swan_dolphin_part_three.html

Here is an explanation for the fish themselves, they are a cartoon, happy version of dolphins, much in the way that no one questions the Mickey represents a mouse when the classic Mickey Head clearly looks nothing like a real mouse at all. :mickeyjum

"... The dolphin image was inspired by the work of Italian sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini [7 December 1598 – 28 November 1680]. An example of Bernini's dolphins can be seen in the King Neptune fountain in the Italian pavilion at Epcot. However, there is a major difference that [Architect Michael] Graves pointed out to us. Bernini's dolphins had mouths that curved downward, and [Disney CEO Michael] Eisner insisted that wasn't going to happen on Walt Disney World property—so Graves' dolphins have their mouths curved upwards as if smiling... "

Of course, due to Suzy's obsession with keeping FP's in our pockets constantly, we had grabbed ToT FP's and RnR FP's as our day had happened. As you can see, in the smaller parks like DHS and AK it isn't even worth mentioning when someone runs and gets them as it can happen while someone is using the restroom. And if you aren't trying to ride TSM, you can get to DHS at noon and easily get FP's to the other major rides. Not sure how Star Tours 2.0 will change the DHS scene in June but I betcha we still will be ok with our DHS 1.5 days plan.

But before we headed over to that area Donald had need insistent on visiting Star Traders, the store attached to Star Tours as he was hoping to get our Vinylmation trading going there with perhaps a Star Wars Vinylmation and a cheap tradable one. But his plans were foiled and we ended up with just the cheap, ugly one.

I admit, we are geeks. We love this store.

IMG_0979.jpg

We then decided to use the rest of our snack credits getting cupcakes at the Rolling Stars bakery. I have a true confession. I've never been in this store. :scared1:

I just  the Writer's Shop so much that I've never gone in here. And I must say, though the cupcakes are AWESOME!!!! I still will be going back to the Writer's Shop. Where the Writer's Shop is quiet and peaceful, the Rolling Stars bakery is absolute mayhem, even in mid afternoon when coffee time should be over.

We bought the giant-est yummist looking cupcakes ever and put them in to go boxes in a bag to take back for later as we were still plenty full from lunch. I also bought Boo a chocolate dipped strawberry. I make these all the time and to spend $4.00 on one is always absolutely ridiculous to me when in 15 minutes and for $2.00 (in summer) I can make 2 dozen. But look at her:
IMG_5119.jpg

What kind of evil mother would I be?

We then split and Suzy, myself, Milo, Boo, Jack-Jack, Buzz, Mulan, and McQueen headed into Beauty and the Beast.

IMG_5121.jpg

Hmmm... maybe Boo got a white chocolate dipped berry? Even a bigger waste. If you're gonna spend $4.00 it ought to be on real chocolate.

Here is Mulan who could not WAIT to trade this bad boy:
IMG_5122.jpg

And this is where my true whining begins. My camera was biting the dust big time. Every time I went to take a picture it wouldn't work and I would have to rip the thing apart, beat it on my leg, and then it would finally work, with mixed, fuzzy results. Since I take 80-90% of all our family photos this was a BAD thing. It had been acting up all week but this show was the point where I had had enough. It still worked through this day, again with mixed results (I get in trouble later this day for bad camera usage) until finally at one point the next day Suzy just let me use hers for the rest of the trip.

This also drove me bonkers as mine can turn on and take a photo seconds later. Hers takes 15 seconds to be ready making me miss a lot of good shots. That is why from this Beauty and the Beast show onwards I was searching on the internet for a new camera.

Fortunately I have a MILLION pictures of this show as it is a favorite of mine. On this trip I think I took 2 pictures of this show. It was just too stressful to try. Also, fortunately, the Disney casting agent who chose Ariel was not on staff when the cast of this show was chosen. GREAT singers. Great actors, LOVE!
IMG_5124.jpg

While we were doing this, the rest of our team was ToT'ing it.
IMG_1472.jpg

Look at what hams they are, pretend screaming for the camera. Shoulda bought this one, it's great!
IMG_0980.jpg

I can't remember what exactly everyone was doing. Shopping, pottying, etc. But our base was right here in this shady spot outside Beauty and the Beast. Milo and Buzz were there the whole time reading. Like father like son:
IMG_1470.jpg

Milo took this unflattering photo of me and I'm only including it to show you exactly what a mom looks like after days of Disney touring. You, too, can look this exhausted:
IMG_1471.jpg

What I am saying in the above photo is, "I'm going into this store." I'm not much of a shopper but I was sitting there looking at the window display for a very long time and it had this subtle, pretty line of women items, handbags and scarves and jewelry. And I said to myself, "Self, if they have that scarf in black and white and it is under $20.00 then that can be my souvenir." So I went in and it was under $15.00 and in black and white and 15 seconds later, I had myself a souvenir and was sitting back on my behind there in the shade. THAT is my kind of shopping. I wear that scarf at least once a week and I'm gonna look for another this trip.

When Donald came back he and Mulan and Boo went to trade the Vinylmation:
P3230156.jpg

And because Mulan is the best sister EVER she let Boo pick her very first trade.
P3230157.jpg

P3230158.jpg

It was super lame so on our way out they dashed in a few more stores looking for the black Vinylmation trading box. I believe they traded it once more on our way out.

I so love the picture of you sitting in the shade. It's such an accurate description of what a mom looks like half way through a Disney vacation.

When we were heading out of Epcot at closing one (particularly hellish) night, I saw a photopass photographer standing there and made the snap decision to have him take mine and my sons picture in front of Spaceship Earth (my daughter and husband weren't there because she had peed her pants on Mission:Space. I told you it was a hellish night). Anyway, that picture is one of my favorites because I'm so disheveled and sweaty and I've got my 11 month old in the sling and he's leaning WAY back and chewing on his Pooh bear and my 9 year old is looking mad because he had mouthed off and wasn't allowed to speak at the moment. It just such true picture of what one looks like at the end of a long Disney day!
