Suspension from school

Well, sadly I have been there, done that and I took the day off and made ds wash windows all day. Not sure why, but he hated that chore the most. And when I say all day, I mean all day. From 7 am until after dark, he washed my windows, my mom's windows and my sister's windows. His arms were sore for a week! :rotfl:

:rotfl2: bet her either learned to behave or learned how to improve on how to clean the windows in 2 hours or less:laughing:

My 15 year old son has never had a detention, BUT this year he was suspended for fighting. I am proud of my son and he did nothing wrong. They were having a teacher vs student assembly and the teachers that were not playing were cheering. Some boy pushed my son at the top of the bleachers. My son responded with "chill man, I don't wanna fight". Then the kid called my son a name and my son turned and sat back down with his friends. The other boy gets in his face and shoves my son's head into the hard wall. Well, that was about all it took for my son to get up and get in defensive stance (he takes tae kwon do) and he told someone to get a teacher. The boy rushed him and they fought. Ended up both of them rolled down the stairs even. The boy would not quit until my son had no choice but to protect himself. I am sure the boy is very upset that he chose the wrong kid to mess with since my son knew how to handle himself well during this fight. Our school has a no tolerance policy for fighting. The principal flat out told me she wishes she could clone my boy beccause he is such a good kid, but that she had no choice but to give him the same suspension as the other kid. The other kid cornered my son, attacked him twice and my son sent for assistance. STILL, my son was suspended. Infuriates me, but I am sooo proud of my suspended kid! He did everything he could to handle that situation. I love him and I took him out to eat for lunch each day of his suspension. He was devastated the whole time because he hated missing those days. The downside of it all is that he missed 5 days of work he would not be able to make up. He will no longer be in the running for national honor society, but there are worse things in this life. Be aware that many students who do not give a crap about their futures will mess with the kids that do because of reasons known only to them. Schools with no tolerance policies have kids that will do these things just to get someone in trouble. My son is lazy sometimes, sleeps too much and spends way too much time worrying about his girlfriend and texting, BUT a troublemaker he is not. Love that kid lol :love:

Something similar happened to my oldest. A kid assaulted him and that kid was suspended but they wanted to give mine a detention "because of his history," (?WTH). Anyways, I refused to agree to the detention, my son did nothing wrong. I sent an email to the principal, who didn't respond. Found out it went to spam, I called and left a message about how disappointed I was. She immediately called me back, I explained the situation and she couldn't understand why he was given a detention. She didn't make him serve it.

ETA: I have no issue for suspending for the right reasons. I fully support the teachers and staff, but I wish they would take each case into consideration instead of a blanket-no tolerance-policy

ETA2: As for punishment. Community service. Haven't for suspension but for fighting with their brothers. I make them shovel in the winter and pick at the ice on the neighbor's drive. Now that it's nice out, they will start pulling dandelions out if they fight with each other.

ICAM the blanket no tolerance truly boggles my mind.... especially since the kids who do not care and want to get suspended use it to their advantage UGH!

Have you talked to the board? This is a great case of why they should give the principal room to make decisions.

When my son got suspended, I had a friend who did daycare take him for the day. (He was way too old for daycare, so this was embarrassing to him.) I also made him pay her her daily rate out of his allowance. She allowed him to earn it back by doing chores for her.

I knew if I left him alone, it would be too fun for him. We also were planning a trip, and did not want to take any days. If he stayed with grandparents, it would have been a day of fun and relaxation for him.

I thought it was the perfect solution and he actually did a lot of work for my friend.

Whatever the arrangement I'd make sure the child PAID whoever had to take their time to stay with them. If I lost a day of work then then would either pay me for the missed day or pay it back doing chores.

The school board and superintendent are the ones who set the policy to begin with. :( I wish there were something we could have done, but we were told there was absolutely nothing they would do if we took it above the principal's head. She was very kind and I do accept that she truly had no control over the punishment, but I feel it is completely unjustified to punish both kids equally. If more parents have this happen and come together we might be able to push for a change in the future.

Depends will child do what you say? Also do you disprove of why they got suspend or agree agree with the school? I know that sounds odd but it makes a difference.

If you agree with school and your child will follow your rules: I'd have a nice long list of chores to be completed. I'd disable the network and the cable and take away the wires for any video games. I'd also take the cell phone any talking that needs to take place can happen on house phone I'd leave ipod kids need music to clean =) also ask school for make up work that child will be missing by not attending classes.

If you don't agree with the school I'd contact the school and get make up work for day lost and request a meeting with the principal.

If your child will likely wander about and not follow the rules I'd take the day off and ask the school to let my child come to school and I'd sit in class with him. My friends dad did this for a week so that his son wouldn't serve a suspension and trust me he never got in trouble again. The embarrassment of having his father in school with his was all he needed.
