We will be eating at the California Grill and I have always wanted to try Sushi. Can someone help me out with what I should order for a first timer. I don't want anything to over bearing if that is possible.

Thanks

When I take newbies out for sushi I usually start with something easy like a California Roll. It is just Crab (cooked) rice ,seaweed and avacado. It's easier to start out with something cooked. My next choice to intro uncooked fish would be a spicy tuna roll. Which is Maguro tuna with sirachi(sp?) sauce it is usually slightly spicy but not overpowering. I also look at rolls with deep fried shrimp and if they are feeling adventurous something with Unagi which is smoked Eel. Which sounds kinda scary (EEL?) but I find most people really enjoy it.

Word of caution....the green stuff on your plate is Wasabi which is a type of horseradish ....not Guacamole. I have a friend who thought it was Guac and ate a huge chunk. Boy, did she get a surprise!!!

As a 1st-timer you'll want to keep things simple. A california roll would be a good start: nori(dried seaweed) wrapped around a roll of crab (or imitation crab) avocado, cucumber and rice. Has a nice fresh taste and no raw fish. If you are feeling more adventursome you may like a tuna roll or a salmon roll. Both are easy to eat and fairly mild in flavor. One tip to keep in mind is that each roll usually comes cut into 6 pieces. The sushi is usually served with the wasabi (green putty appearing horseradish) and the pickled ginger (pink or tan slices). The wasabi can be added to your soy sauce if you want to spice it up. The ginger is meant to be a palate-cleanser between pieces of sushi. Enjoy!

Oh, I'm so glad somebody posted this. I'll be at California Grill, using the DxDDP in May and would love to try sushi as my appetizer, but have no idea what to order. I know the two most expensive sushi rolls you can't get, even on the DxDDP. I have had California rolls and enjoyed them and would like to try something else. The Fiery Kaza Roll (spicy crab, shrimp, pickled vegetables, kazan sauce), the Spicy Sensation (scallops, tuna, avocado, tobiko, Fireball sauce), or maybe the Double Crunch Rainbow Roll (cobia, salmon, tuna, tempura crunch, tobiko) all sound interesting. What is kazan sauce, tobiko, fireball sauce, and cobia?:confused3 What would be good for my second excursion into sushi? Are any of these meats cooked? Not sushi of course, but I had the tuna tartare appetizers at Jiko's and at Wolfgang Pucks and enjoyed them. I love spicy food if that helps. Also does anyone have any pictures of these? Thanks!

Okay, for sushi newbies, the name is going to turn you off, but this was excellent. Last month at CG I had the "Snake in the grass". It's 2 pieces of tempura shrimp (really good lightly crispy fried shrimp) with cooked and seasoned eel. It was all cooked and you would have never known it was eel if the description didn't say so. Of course it also had rice, the standard seaweed wrap and maybe some avacado. It was excellent.

I was in town on business and by myself and they put me at the sushi chef's table. It's the counter that literally overlooks the sushi prep area. So I had a glass of wine and just watched for about 30 minutes before I decided to order so I'd know what was popular. I am not a sushi connoiseur by any means.

By far, there were more orders of this type of sushi than anything else.

However, there was another one that looked really interesting. It was a sushi roll that they then lightly fried in tempura batter. I think it was called Double Crunch or something like that. It looked like it would be really yummy too.

I'm adding my vote for Snake in the Grass. It might be the best roll I've ever had. It is huge and delicious.

DH & I went to CG for our 15th anniversary. Our waiter was disappointed that we weren't into sushi but with his encouragement we decided we wanted to try it. He had suggested a plate of california rolls (some were with crab and some with shrimp). Wasn't on the menu but everything on it was cooked and delish! We've not ventured far from that in our sushi experience. But we do like california rolls now!

Has anyone ever gone to CG just to eat sushi? We are going in November and we just want to eat sushi and maybe a flatbread, will they care if we skip the entree?

The Yoshi's Sushi Platter counts as an entree, I think. At least you can't order it as an appetizer on the DDP. Same for Snake in the Grass. Anyway, I think they wouldn't have a problem with it. I seriously doubt you'd be the only one... after all, sushi is a meal in itself. ;)

I loved the Yoshi platter. My DH had the flatbread which was delicous.
