Sushi 101

California rolls...but honestly, I'd skip sushi if you are a vegetarians. I know a lot of pescatarians who eat sushi, but the vegetarians I know are almost always disappointed - not nearly enough food or variety in veggie sushi.

No no! Don't skip it! I don't eat fish and am allergic to shellfish (so no California Rolls for me), but I love veggie sushi -- OK, probably not technically sushi, but the maki rolls.

Usually, I have to go off the menu, but the chefs have always been great about helping me get creative. About two rolls with a bowl of miso soup and some edamame and you've got a perfectly yummy veggie sushi meal.

Some of my favorite combos:

Veggie tempura (usually sweet potato) with spicy mayo and eel sauce (no it's not actually made from eel).

Asparagus, cucumber, avocado, mayo and sesame seeds -- this one is usually on the veggie menu

Spinach, Kampyo (marinated gourd), avocado, and sesame seeds -- this is a futo roll without the crab and roe

Cucumber, cream cheese and green onion

Some sushi DOES taste fishy. Ever had fresh mackerel? If not, try it.

Heh, no kidding! The first time I ordered saba nigiri I almost complained that it wasn't fresh, but I tend to be conservative about such things, and said nothing. I was glad I didn't as I later learned the truth!

The California Grill has Sushi

recent menu....

Yoshie's Sushi Sampler...... Maki and Nigiri $13
Yellowfin Tuna Three Ways ..... Poki, Tartar, and Tataki $20
Sashimi Trio......Yellowfin Tuna, Salmon, and Hamachi $16
Spicy Sensation.....Scallops, Tuna, Asparagus, Tobiko, and Fireball Sauce $18
"Snake in the Grass"..... Shrimp Tempura with Avacado, Eel, and Cucumber $22
Dungeness Crab California Roll with Avacado and Cucumber $17
Yoshie's Deluxe Sushi Platter.....Maki and Nigiri $24

Another one here who has never tried Sushi, but wants to give it a try. Tempanyaki has combo roll (spicy tuna roll and California roll) and also has Sushi sampler (tuna, yellowtail, salmon nigiri, California roll) on their menu. Exactly what are those and are they raw or cooked? Would there be several pieces or just a bite of each? They're only like $7.95. Also what do the soybean pods taste like? One more question, I don't think I want to embarrass my self trying to use chopsticks. Is it considered bad to ask for and use a fork?

While my mom and my ex are using the dining plan I'd like to pay OOP and try a soup and sushi, while possibly nibbling off their plates. Would Tempanyaki have a problem with that.
