Does anyone have any "official" info regarding the specific purpose of the little round survey markers embedded into the ground all throughout the resort?

I saw a picture of one on another thread, and it re-piqued my interest. I've seen them around, but I've always been curious about them :]

Are you sure they are survey markers? There are several round markers with a hole in the middle throughout the parks. They are used to hold the posts for the parade ropes.

I've never even noticed them, but I don't usually look at the ground while I'm walking in the World.

don't ever tell anyone a Librarian sent you here ;)

These are EVERYWHERE in the US. Most are a standard disc, as seen in the article, but special places, like WDW were able to get custom made ones. When I had more free time, I used to "hunt" for these...you'll need a GPS that can give you latitude and longitude though.

If you want a list of the markers around WDW go here:

Just something else to add to the list of "collectibles"...including Hidden Mickeys, Character signatures, Character pics, etc :thumbsup2

Any good Civil Engineer could tell you they are for surveying the property. Determining elevations, etc.

As mentioned above, the markers are a point of reference for location and elevation. All future expansion or refurb work will be designed and constructed using these markers, provided they remain intact. Very cool to find them. Do they count as a hidden mickey? ;-)

We've noticed them, very cool. They are set, know points of reference where a surveyor can set his transit on, plumb bob to that marker and then take coordinates for various surveying, altitudes, direction, footage in different directions.
