to Orlando!
I hope this is ok to report on here. If not, mods please let me know and I will take it to the community board or something...

I started one of these earlier, then the transfer was canceled so my husband and I kept our happy little selves in the DC metro area. And took a trip to Orlando in January.

Driving out of Orlando (yes we roadtrip and love love LOVE it!) I said to him, ya know honey, we aren't due home for a few days (we cut our disney trip short by a few days) maybe we should stay an extra night or two and check out the city, see some houses and apartments, ya know just in case we ever get trasnfered here. We laughed and said, oh you know that's never going to happen for real. And kept on driving... all the way back to snowy VA.

UM WRONG! It has happened. It's offical, we are moving to Orlando. June 1. Just in time for summer. FANTASTIC.

I haven't told ,my boss yet, just on the offhand of something falling through in the next 10 days (every other time we were "moving" it fell through in the 10 days following. Then again, maybe I need to do it in the next few days because I didn't believe my husband when he called to tell me, so his boss called to tell me. And my dh has a lot of the upstairs packed up. So I am pretty sure this is happening. Like 99.9% sure.

The following is the story of my life (for the next 2 years at least or more if I love it!) living "at" disneyworld.

I'm SO jealous!! Can you swing by Fredericksburg and pick me up on your way down? Please?!! My kids won't miss me until the lights get shut off....

All kidding aside, I'm excited for you both! June definitely is not the month to get acclimated to Florida but heck - you have a/c in the car, house and stores so just make a run for it to the car if you have to go outside :lmao: (We sort of moved to Orlando in 1994 (my hubby, me and our 5 kids ages 1 1/2 to 16 yrs old), drove from Oregon and were going to see WDW and Sea World and see if we liked the area, and if so, we were ready to stay. We had sold everything in Oregon so we were pretty much homeless so to speak lol. But our van gave us troubles all the way across country and we sort of just stayed in a Days Inn Suites hotel trying to get it fixed and never went to WDW. Sadly my husb suffered a heart attack in the hotel room and died so we made the decision not to bury him there since we had no family in Florida so we sent him up to WV to his family's cemetary and we moved up there.) Sorry about the long story but I had to share because life is an adventure, we had so much fun traveling to Florida even with all the troubles and the sad ending, we wouldn't have done it any other way. My husband lived his dream to see parts of America along the way plus he got to swim in the Atlantic Ocean a few days before he passed away and he spent quality time with his family which was the most important part of our journey.

I wish you all the best on your adventure and hope you get that Resident's pass as soon as you arrive to start visiting WDW as soon as possible :grouphug:

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your husband while on your trip.
:grouphug: At least he was doing something he really wanted to do when it had to happen. In a way that would comfort me the way it seemingly comforted you.
Family is extremely important to me, and that is one thing that scared me about this move, is being away from my grandmother-she raised me and I'm not used to going more than 24 hours without seeing her. I have breakfast at her house every morning. :lovestruc It is going to be hard on me and on her. I know its goign to take some adjustment time.

I didn't intend of starting a thread and leaving for 10 days, but that looks like the story here...

We've been packing and getting ready for the last week and a half. The word is final, there is no turning back now.

I'm terrified and excited all at the same time. I can't believe this is actually happening for real.

DH's work is flying us to Orlando on the 5th of May to find a place to live. We will have about 4 days to check out places and pick one. We've been going through all of the apartments and rental homes so that we can have a master list and hopefully work our way through seeing them all in a timely manner.

I am still not sure if I want to go down for the home picking excursion. I HATE flying to start, and I don't want to miss work. I LOVE my job, its family owned, and I feel like the family that owns it is a second family to me. I really don't want to leave my job, that is one very disappointing thing for me. I might stay here and work so that I don't miss out on the little time I have left there. Also, I am tyring to avoid flying. ;) I know I need to go though-I can't keep avoiding flying, I like takeoff, and being in the air, I am just phobic of vomit (clinically and everything, not just scared but actually phobic-anywho.) and am terrified someone will get air sick from turbulance near me. I realize this is a stupid fear and I am trying to work my way through it, so avoiding the flight will not help me, and I am bound and determined to not pass on this stupid, irrational fear to my children. I've come leaps and bounds but am not "cured" yet. I know I should keep experiencing flying to help me.

I think we are actually going to live about 30 minutes away from WDW. Closer to DH's work. Maybe near UCF.

We know we need a home with a garden tub, and no farther than 20 minutes away :goodvibes

I'm really :goodvibesexcited an can't wait to get my first annual pass. And go see fireworks. I'm so excited about the fireworks.

I wish I could post pictures of our potential homes, but I think it's kind of weird to post pictures of a random strangers home when we aren't even tenants in it yet.

Hopefully there will be more to come, in a more timely manner soon.

Congratulations! That must be exciting and sad at the same time, with your job and your grandmother.

But, yes, I think I'll move you to the Community Board, as this isn't a WDW trip, so to speak. Good luck! :thumbsup2

Since you mentioned that your husbands employer is close to UCF, they mentioned on the news here just today that Oveido was once again voted one of the best places to live in America.
This location will put you about 30-40 minutes from WDW depending on the time of day that you are driving there.

Tuskawilla is a nice area as well.

Good Luck on your move.

I'm glad to hear this good feedback! I've been using another message board that is all about relocation and different cities, and people paint Orlando in a terrible light. Sure, we've been to wdw, but I've never explored the city outside of the immediate wdw area, and I was actually considering staying in No. VA with a friend, and letting my husband take a dog and get a studio apartment. They make it seem like you can't go out of your house without getting mugged and you can't leave your house because it will get broken into.

I understand that all cities have their bad areas, and its unavoidable, but I was pretty scared because all of the people saying these things. I guess it ties into the whole scared of moving away from home for the first time thing.

My DH is going to check out Oveido today and see what matches our criteria, so thanks again!

OMG!! Your story is almost exactly the same as ours. DH applied for a new position the 5th of April and starts in Celebration May 3. We were not even considering moving but he was really mad at his boss. I'm having all the same feelings as you are:upsidedow It's really overwhelming. Al our friends and family are here. But I keep telling myself life is meant to be lived and experienced not just gotten through on autopilot.
Just a hint if you haven't committed to a house yet. New boss suggested we rent a vacation home for a month or 6 weeks. They are fully furnished and all utilities including cable and internet. That way you can look around and really begin to see neighborhoods and traffic. We got a 3 BR for $1300 total for the entire month of May.
DH is going on Saturday, I'm staying to get the house together and to finish out the school year. Good Luck!

*cough* *cough* house for sale *cough* *cough*

lol

In all seriousness if you need to be near UCF, that is where I'd look. Oviedo, the east side of Winter Springs (Tuskawilla)...the area north of UCF off of Alafaya. I wouldn't rule out Winter Park either though the commute can be wonky.

What a fun adventure for you young people!

Would you two ladies, who are relocating, mind sharing what profession your DH's have that "force" them to relocate to the happiest place on earth?
I need DH to change careers;)

I'm definitely subscribing! We have been thinking of moving to Florida for years now too. I even look at homes on realtor .com in hopes of moving someday. Also did you check out city data? That is a good website as well. I can't wait to see what your husband thinks of Oviedo. We thought about Oviedo, Lake Mary or Winter Springs since we need good school for the kids.

Anyway I'm excited for you but I understand how overwhelming this all must be. Just think you will so close to Disney!

I don't want to hijack ACEJKA's thread> I posted myself about 10 days ago about our sudden move. But, any help, support and info I can get going into this is a plus.
DH is a network computer security whiz. He won't be working for Disney:sad2:, but he will be working with Disney's computers. It sounds like Acejka is young, we, however, are middle aged. We've lived in our current community for 26 years and raised our family here. As long as I focus on the big picture, new adventures and new opportunities I'm fine. When I think about leaving the people I love it becomes much harder. Luckily Orlando is a place EVERYONE wants to come and visit. The vacation weeks are already filling up with visitors from the cold north:) Our two grown sons are even considering relocating to the area. I hope they will, it would make everything seem better.
Acejka, I want you to know that a move can be a wonderful thing for a young married couple. We did it 5 times in 6 years in our early marriage. You come to realize that being with that one person is more important than anything else. You make a life together in a new place and it becomes home.

Congratulations! What an adventure. From what I have heard of the DC area, if you're used to that you will be fine in Orlando. Sure, Orlando has it's fair share of crime but I assume that you can find a safe neighborhood to live in. Just like an city there are safe places to live and not-so-safe places to live.

I have flown dozens of times, sometimes in turbulence, and have NEVER seen or heard someone use the barf bag. Ever. I know that irrational fears are, well, irrational ... but I don't think there is a higher chance of being near a vomiting person in a plane than anywhere else . I would NOT pass on helping find a place to live just because you are afraid of someone possibly (maybe, perhaps, one in a gazillion chance) vomiting on a plane. It's simply not going to happen and you will miss out on helping select a place to live for both of you. Plus, you'll miss going to WDW on your house hunting trip :rolleyes1.

I love the idea of a vacation house! I just wonder where we will put all of our stuff in the meantime... I kind of wish I could just go right now and be done with it. The anticipation is driving me insane...

My dh works for a major defnese contractor who has an office in Orlando... He is a computer nerd, a security analyst.

Aww...I wish we could trade places.

We are moving up to VA--Manassas.

Don't worry about the summer--just find a pool to cool off in.

I'd like to say you'll love it here--b/c I know I do..at least in my little beach cottage.

I think it will be good for our marriage, we will be forced to deal with our problems and be ourselves rather than me run home to my family when things get tough. I have a list of people a mile long who already want to come visit, so hopefully that will keep my spirits up. My family won't visit though. :guilty: That is super cool that your dh will be working with disney's computers!

Thanks! And I don't why I associate the turbulance with throwing up... I guess because I've heard so many stories about it... I know it can happen anywhere! It's so stupid and irrational :headache: I wish we could go to wdw on the trip, but its going to be really quick and dh has to work a half day two of the days we are there... I won't mind laying by a pool though!

Isn't Faralpeg (Sp/) from Florida, she lives near Windemere. Hopefully she will chime in. We saw a few homes east of Sea World, and it looked like it had some decent neighborhoods. But lots of traffic zipping in from the East into Orlando.

That's so funny! We are essentially trading places! We aren't too far from Manassas.

I hope I do love it in Florida. Most of my friends and family sound like they are wanting me to hate it...

:lmao:

My husband is trying to get me to love Virginia. Sorry--nope--not going to work. I'm complying with a move, but that's as close I get to loving it.:rotfl:

One good thing about VA--homeowners on a house twice the size of my Florida home that is walking distance to the beach...no lie, 1/5th the cost.:scared1:

That's the only thing I'll "love".:rolleyes1
:rotfl:

I guess if all of your family is up there, it stands to reason why they feel you should hate Florida.

But hating a location doesn't make a job in the place you love magically appear. You have to go where the work is, suck it up, and make the best of it. My son cannot wait for his "Cars Room" at his Virginia house.
