Surprise announcement update!

I don't see how Disney could think we'd be excited about a "free day" promotion. With a family of four, if you stay at a moderate, a free day would save about $250. I guess it would be more if they added a free day on the dining plan, but to get that I'm sure you'd have to buy the rest of your trip on the dining plan...which kind of nullifies the one free day.

Kids Stay and Play free could save a family $500 to $750, the free dining plan has saved my family more than $600, and even pure room discounts can save hundreds of dollars.

I can't see how they think one free day would bring in any reservations - it wouldn't make me pick up the phone.

I don't think Disney NEEDS to provide any type of fantastic deal in 2012. With the upcoming Fantasyland expansion opening, that will sell itself. Expect large crowds this coming year. Disney can just sit back and relax this year.

This may be true of 2013, but hardly of 2012. Pretty much anything beyond the basic refurbs and alterations to existing rides is scheduled for "late 2012" (which could mean anything) and 2013. If anything, I think this year may be light because people who only go down there every few years may wait for 2013 to make the trip.

Here is a twist on the "free day" that I seriously doubt Disney would do - give you the FIRST day free. As in the first day of the ticket, not the last day which is only a $8 savings.

In other words - buy a package deal of at least X days, get the first day free. Or another way, an $85 dollar credit towards a park ticket, with a minimum X-day ticket purchase as part of a package.

I really don't think they're going for a room/package discount. I expect if there is a promotion it will be something along the lines of Year of a Million Dreams/free on your birthday/give-a-day... IOW, something that exists independent of the resort booking and which can be combined with other discounts if they're offered, and that is open to *all* guests rather than just those staying at a Disney owned resort.

Free for ypur birthday! We will be there for my birthday. That would be great!!

I hope it's worthwhile. We're thisclose to convincing the in-laws for a May trip and it would be nice to have something extra to convince them!

The thing that has me intrigued is that they say it is something they have never done before. They have done all sorts of BOGO's in the past. So a free day on the ticket wouldn't really be something they have never done before.

The 24 hours on 2/29 doesn't make sense either, at least by itself. Most people going in February already have their plans and tickets, so it would only be marketing to a very small group of people, not the hundreds of millions that the advertising campaign is going out to.

My theories are:

1- Ticket promotion, maybe free extra days (Buy 3 days, get 1 free, Buy 6 days, get 2 free or any sort of combination) or free park hopper add on.

2- Disney originally had no idea what their announcement was when they made the pre-announcement and were hoping to gather some ideas from various message boards.

3- I'm also starting to fear the announcement is being so over-hyped that it will be disappointing to regular Disney-goers.

Also, I'm not certain if this has been asked already, so I apologize for any repetition.. but the countdown clock on the Disney site - does that refer to EST, CT, ?? Or is it only counting down to the start of the show, not necessarily the announcement?

Hello fellow Tosa resident! :goodvibes Hope you can convince your in laws to go.

Excited to find out about what the deal will be.

"Never done before" announcement likely made by a PR person who has no idea of just what has or has not been done before.

I'm not holding a high expectation at all.

It says "One More Disney Day." Could it be the announcement of a new park to be built? Wouldn't that add one more day to stay at Disney?

Highly unlikely as they said they were dialing back spending on the parks after the FLE and Pandora/Avatar expansion. It would also take several years to complete so have nothing to do with the upcoming year.

And they've built new parks before, so it wouldn't qualify under the "not been done before" quote...

I really loved celebrating my 40th birthday during the birthday celebrations in 2009.

It was really neat to be in the parks during that time especially since we had decided to go for my birthday before the announcement was made about special birthdays.

All of the CMs were amazing, and the celebration cost the company practically nothing. (That is assuming that they spent some money on training or incentives to make the CMs so completely pumped up about MY birthday.)
