Is it me or have we not been hearing much about the covid surge lately?

Before Thanksgiving it was all gloom and doom and how we were heading for a dark winter and cases will skyrocket and people will die etc. It was at the point where the news was causing a lot of anxiety and stress. After Thanksgiving there was the "well now we are seeing the rise in cases due to holiday gatherings." But even that has dropped off. I am not hearing the dire predictions on the news or the warnings not to gather at Christmas like we heard the warning for Thanksgiving gatherings.

I guess maybe they are now focused on the vaccine?

All we hear is the surge....we have more daily cases than ever before and likely going back on lock down. Will know this afternoon.

Update: going under modified stay at home order with curfew midnight to 5 am.

No. Our headlines today are record high hospitalizations and 2nd highest day of new cases. Def still talking surge here.

Don't know where you are, but here it's the lead (and basically only) story on every news program. Highest case numbers and deaths yet in the pandemic, and being linked to Thanksgiving get-togethers. Here in southern California we're on a 3 week lock down. As in "don't go anywhere" lock down. Due to the low numbers of ICU beds available. I believe at last count we're down to 9% UCI bed availability in the region.

It just seems they have been mentioning the deaths and surge etc. but not to the extent they were before. Now it seems like it's just a quick blip then on to the vaccine news. I have not heard the warnings about gathering for Christmas like I was hearing about Thanksgiving.

All we hear about here in CA is the surge. Lead story on the local news, mentioned during the weather report, several personal interest stories about the surge. On every station. We even get "Amber alert" style notices on our phones - sometimes twice a day.

Even on the radio. We listen to an all Christmas music station and twice an hour there is a PSA about the surge and the lock-downs here in the area.

NC just put in a curfew. Numbers are climbing nationwide. Yes they are warning people not to gather for the holidays but like at Thanksgiving many will ignore it.

If I look towards today's COVID briefing for my metro area they said this: "a potential Thanksgiving “surge” in cases may not be evident for another two weeks." And a briefing from 6 days ago mentioned "It’s still too early to tell if there will be another surge from the Thanksgiving holiday"

That said a lot of conversation about surge from Thanksgiving has quieted down in favor of vaccine talks, especially distribution of where it's going and who would be included as well as other stuff.

The post Thanksgiving surge is definitely happening. My husband is a physician in the Covid ICU. Things are really really bad. In just one day they had to put 8 Covid patients on ventilators (his ICU is normally a 24 bed icu). Usually he might put a patient on a ventilator once or twice a week in non Covid times, 8 in one day is unheard of in his unit. They also have 2 additional Overflow Covid ICUs that are full also. They have had to stop taking transfers from other hospitals (they were getting so many requests each day from hospitals many states away wanting to send patients to him because they were full). Now we are full too. Things are much much worse than any other time during the pandemic. The reasons you aren’t hearing as much lately is because healthcare workers are completely exhausted, frustrated, and really have no hope that anyone cares about the warnings they have been trying to give. Despite all of their pleas we continue to see friends and family traveling, gatherings, and fake news about Covid. It is honestly maddening and he (and I) don’t have the mental energy to spend on anything other than making it through this dark time right now.

I don’t know what news you are watching, but I still see lots on the increasing numbers. Is it as “much” as a few weeks ago? I don’t know because I’m hadn’t timed the stories. It is still the most important story & getting coverage. Of course the vaccine news is now getting a lot of time too, it is the next important step in trying to get this crisis under control. News & government agencies have been begging people to alter their behavior for months. People are either doing it or not. There is nothing new in those recommendation, so that part is no longer “news”. I don’t know, maybe news agencies don’t think doing those stories repeatedly is the best use of their time & staff. The record numbers of positive cases, hospitalizations & deaths is news & is being reported. And the authorization & distribution of the vaccine is currently just happening, so that is “news” in the true sense of the word. Makes sense you would be hearing more about that right now.

And for what it’s worth, I still hear health & our government officials talking about a dark winter as well as urging people to alter travel & Christmas holiday plans. They have said mid January is going to be a really bad time if the public doesn’t heed the warnings.

I'm so over the "I'm special" attitude of those who go about their business like there's no problem. As I said, we're on a stay at home order here. Business are supposed to be closed. And what do I see this morning? At our neighbor's house - a party rental truck unloading. Guess she's having a big get-together.

In MD we are starting to slide downhill again, Baltimore is tightening up restrictions as of 5pm on Friday (I think), AA County JUST announced similar restrictions for 4 weeks starting this weekend, and our Governor is holding a press conference at 3PM. He had said he wouldn't "lock down" or put additional restrictions on things in the state unless hospitalizations went up, and up they have gone. I think general consensus is he's going to tighten things up state-wide. I just can't imagine how the already struggling and hardly making it establishments are going to survive this. So many people losing their livelihoods. The blood, sweat & tears so many put into their small businesses, and over the holidays where they potentially make a fair bit of their yearly income. It just breaks my heart -

So far (fingers crossed, knock wood), Illinois is actually decreasing in both positivity rate and hospitalizations since before Thanksgiving. We've also been on a modified shutdown too.

As with many stories, it depends on where you're getting your news. I frequently watch a particular national news channel that has been reporting very detailed information on the Covid surge. Thanksgiving gatherings and travel seem to have contributed greatly to the total of national cases.

We still don't have the entire picture. If a person contracted the virus over Thanksgiving weekend, it would take a number of days for symptoms to appear, for the person to get tested and for the results to be recorded. On average, it would take that person another 10 days to get sick enough to go to the hospital (if their level of virus is severe). It would an average of 7 more days for that person to die. Thanksgiving was 14 days ago, so many cases are still being discovered. Then you have to think of the number of people who were subsequently exposed by someone who contracted the virus over Thanksgiving weekend. Those people will develop symptoms and get tested later. A number of people could be asymptomatic and spreading the virus without knowing. It all creates a huge surge in cases and deaths that we're beginning to see.

My area of California has been on a stay-at-home order since Monday. We can leave the house for essential purposes, like grocery shopping and outdoor exercise. My preschool class was in-person for two months, but the school district shut us down after Thanksgiving break. We're on our second week of online classes. We are hearing strong warnings about traveling or gathering for Christmas. My mom, brother and sister all live in the same city as us, but we won't be together on Christmas. We will drop off presents on each other's porches and open them together via Zoom. It won't be as much fun, but that's what we have to do this year.
