We'll be heading to Oahu in July for my youngest DD's Make A Wish trip. My older DD(20yo) and husband would like to try and surf. I've been trying to do some research and have found a wide range of prices. Some are as low as $40 (Surf Academy) and others are much higher (Hawaiian Fire is $109).

Any suggestions?

We spent Christmas on Oahu a few years back and our youngest daughter (15 at the time) wanted to take surf lessons. We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village which is located on Waikiki Beach. There was a place set up right on the beach in front of the hotel that offered surf lessons. I don't remember the price, but I know it seemed reasonable, and our daughter even took a private lesson.

The first part of the lesson was given in a small group on the sand, then one of the surf instructors took my daughter out in the ocean for a longer lesson. My daughter had never surfed before and by the end of her lesson, she was standing up and catching a few waves.:) There were also photographers in the water taking pictures and videos of all the people taking lessons.

After that day, my daughter (along with several other family members) rented surfboards and went out on their own. My daughter had a lot of fun learning to surf! The instructors were all wonderful.

Oahu is an amazing place! It was one of our very favorite vacations, and I'd love to go back someday. I hope your family has a wonderful time there!

My sister and I took surf lessons on Oahu many years ago. It was so much fun! It was just the two of us and the instructor. If I recall it was just a stand set up on the beach. I don't remember the cost but it couldn't have been that bad as we were young. We really did have so much fun though so no matter what it cost it was worth it.

DS just did this yesterday, a kind of Easter Present to himself. He really enjoyed it. He didn't tell me the name of the company, but he did tell me about the cost. It was $40 per person, if there were 3 or more people at the lesson. For 2 people, it would have been $55 each. Matt and his roommate were planning on just the two of them, but for that price, the roommate's girlfriend also did it.
