supposed to meet someone...

My bank, for example, guarantees to cash everything up to $400 over what I have in my account. So If I accidentally bounced a check, it will still go through as long as it isn't over $400 bucks. Now they would charge me if I did that and I haven't ever used it. But just letting you know that many banks will go ahead and process it. Then again, if your person has a history of not having money in his account then you might have a hard time.

But somebody else made a good point. I'd go there everyday or every PAY day and try to cash that check at his/her bank.

and if you did do it you would find that even though your bank guarantees to cash it, if it bounces they will charge you for the amount of the check in addition to a fee-and if it causes your account to overdraw they will charge you a fee for every check or debit charge that bounces-and most banks purposely set up their systems such that your largest charges are processed first in the batch each night (so if you deposit a bad check for $300 and assume you have $500 in the bank and do one check for $199 and 10 checks/debits for the remaining $301-they will process the $199 first so they can hit you for 10 overdraws, not process the others up to the amount of $199 so you just get hit with the minimum amount of overdraws).

most banks won't cash a check without a fee for a non customer-you do best to walk in or call to verify funds-and verify they have'nt done a stop payment and then deposit (but don't withdraw or write checks on) into your own account.

So sad they were willing to give up your friendship for $100.

:grouphug:

I loaned $ to my brother 11 years ago and I haven't heard from him in 10 years. I know it is because he couldn't pay the money back. The saddest part is dh and I decided to consider it a gift, we would tell him so if we ever heard from him again. Crushing what debt can do :sad1: :sad1: :sad1:

I'm so sorry...that is awful.

I would completely understand if they told me they just didn't have it. I could have made arrangements for what I need it for. I really wish they could just be upfront.

Yes I understand all of that. My point was for the OP to go try and get the check cashed at the check writer's bank. I don't care if the money borrowing bum gets a bounced check fee as long as the OP gets the money.

okey dokey-but unless they bank with the same institution the bank likely won't cash it for them.

They may just not want to give you the money, but they do have it in their account. Is their a branch of that person's bank nearby? Cash it there. You will find out if they have the money or not.

MIkeeee

Personal checks are only good for 6 months I think. I would go to their bank and cash it before you can't.

All checks are good for 1 year...unless the check specifically states otherwise.

Yes, you can go to the bank it is drawn on & cash it - provided there are enough funds in the account to cover it. Its possible you may need 2 types of ID however. And yes, lets hope they haven't placed a stop payment on it already.

Former asst bank manager here. Its VERY common for people to go to the bank a check is drawn on & cash it in person. Especially small handyman type businesses. They want their cash right away. Check has to be payable to a person however. A check made payable to a business can only be deposited.

Anytime my sister-in-law gives us a check.....I go cash it at her bank rather than depositing it in our account. But I really hate taking checks from her at all.

I disagree with barkleys last statement. If the funds are available --go cash it! If you deposit it, the funds may not be there by the time the check gets to the bank.

Yes, they will. No reason not too with proper id. The check is an order to pay from the account holder. The bank must cash the check if id is valid & funds are available & there is no stop payment. I've NEVER heard of a bank not cashing a check (especially for $100) because the person is not a member. If its a large check, they'll compare signatures on file....and sometimes even call the maker of the check to verify that they wrote it out.

If your bank won't follow your instructions to pay someone...its time to find a new bank.

Some of the 'larger' banks around here will charge you a fee to cash a check if you are not a member. Once I went to a bank to cash a check and they said I had to have an account or they'd have to charge me a $20 fee to cash the check. So went over to one of the account people, opened an account, took the account card I just got, went back to the teller and cashed the check and then went back to the account person to close the account.

After that I spoke with the manager about the rule and that it was rather a silly rule. He said yes, but it was 'corporate policy'. Oh well. Took me an extra 20 minutes to cash the check, but I got it cashed. :)

I like the way you think! :thumbsup2
