Superman Returns PG-13....How come?

dvcfamily - I'm glad you posted this. My DH & I were having the same question. We have kidos DS12, DD9, DS6 & DS5.

about the kids-in-mind site...under "VIOLENCE/GORE" the last thing listed is "A man burps." :confused3 Dang...my house is extremely violent!

I just saw Superman Returns and really enjoyed it. It seems, however, to be a bit darker than the prior Superman movies and there was more violence. Lois Lane was on the receiving end of a beating and that was disturbing. PG-13 sounds about right, although children vary widely in their sophistication and maturity.

We saw it last night. What an AWESOME MOVIE! What a GORGEOUS SUPERMAN!!!! Okay now that aside it is a bit much for younger kids. At the beginning an old lady dies. Its pretty sad. I don't know how to post without spoilers either.

Also its pretty bad when the fight is going on between Superman and Lex and his gang and Lois does get hit.

Then the whole birds and the bees thing also.

I think PG13 is an excellent rating and anyone younger could very possibly have some hard questions although there were tons of younger kids at our showing.

I just found this post and noticed that the OP was probably going yesturday afternoon, but wanted to toss my two cents in.
I saw the movie on Wednesday afternoon, and I've seen all the comic book movies that have been made so far. I'm 20 and I was a little taken aback by a couple scenes in the movie. Don't want to give anything away, but there are some fight scenes that made me cringe and one scene early on that made me want to walk out almost. Also, there is a very intense airplane scene. If you want to know more, pm me, because I don't want to give everything away to those who haven't seen it yet.

The scene with Lex Luther's men was pretty intense. The worst scene for me involved a couple of pets. I won't say anything to spoil, but it was pretty gruesome (though it might go over a child's head).

There is a great website, www.screenit.com that tells what content a movie has. It lists all acts of violence, number of cuss words and kind (abbreviated), sexual stuff, things a kid might copy, and topics the movie might bring up.

The worst scene for me involved a couple of pets.

You know the ONLY way I watched that without getting mad was thinking,
1. ITS JUST A MOVIE AND NOT REAL!
2. My mom has a dog just like those and its a DEVIL DOG! I had to laugh because we always threaten her dog!

SMALL SPOILER BELOW, VERY SMALL WON'T RUIN THE MOVIE BUT TALKS MENTIONS SOMETHING NOT APPROPRIATE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN!!!

That scene with the pets was what ruined it for me. Honestly. My jaw dropped to the floor and I couldn't enjoy the movie as much because that's all I could think about. Why they thought that was even worth including is beyond me. :faint: :scared1:  :sad1:

SSB saw night before last... enjoyed, but thought a bit too much (read: silly) at times. It is scary in a odd way how much this actor is like C. Reeve.

Was also odd SSB thought that they used the same music from the original films, as well as similar graphics for opening credits. If had been billed as Superman V, could see.. but thought that this was to be a whole new beginning for the film series.

My comments on the scene mentioned above (highlight for spoilers) --

This is the one thing I do wish they had done differently with the movie. I can understand why -- they wanted to show that this Luthor isn't the same slightly-campy one we've seen before, but rather a heartless, soulless individual out for himself and for revenge. They also showed that Luthor's willing to sacrifice anything and anyone when he really cut the brake lines in Kitty's car for her rescue by Superman, but what better way to make the point than through man's best friend? I can separate fiction from reality, but if anything had to change it would've been what they inferred with the dogs.

However, I didn't see the dogs kissing the old lady's hand after she died as gruesome. I thought it was them showing their love for her and that they'll miss her.

We did go see it yesterday afternoon. We all liked it. DS did not ask any questions and did not mention anything bothering him. I thought the previews for other movies were worse than anything in the Superman Returns movie.

Obi

I agree it showed they loved her but I thought maybe younger kids might find it disturbing. I thought it was so sad. I agree with your reasoning though to show this Lex as cruel and heartless.
