I think people often rate the shows based on the music they already enjoy, and many believe the best show was Prince.

But, I love this one from the Millennium Celebration with the parade music and We Go On. Superbowl XXXIV

Very cool. I don't think I had ever seen that before. Loved the Millenium celebration and loved hearing the music from the celebration again!

I remember when Super Bowl Halftime Shows were big affairs and in the 80's and 90's they had artists like Aretha Franklin Patti Labelle Diana Ross Billy Joel Bruce Springsteen Michael Jackson and other artists perform a big halftime show and each show used to be themed like in the 90's there was a Motown tribute show. But as soon as the famous Justin Timberlake/Janet Jackson Super Bowl Halftime Show aired this halftime show was the end of big affair halftime shows. And so when U2 performed an entire halftime show in 2003 this marked the new image of Super Bowl Halftime Shows and the same thing was repeated with Prince and once they saw that these solo halftime shows worked the Super Bowl began repeating it ever since. But why they get artists like the late Tom Petty to do Super Bowl Halftime Shows is that they are cheaper to get. But why they have Paul McCartney The Who and The Rolling Stones to perform halftime shows i'll never know. And the same thing with artists like Shakira Madonna Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce is simply because they want to promote their new albums if they release any. But this obsession with rap artists having Super Bowl Halftime shows is somewhat becoming strange and I think they get rap artists because they are much cheaper and want to make them more well-known. But there should be country music halftime shows or have one with jazz artists like actor Jeff Goldblum or make one with Billy Joel and if a Billy Joel halftime show were to exist i'd be watching

I think they should alternate the genre every year. I get they are going for the younger crowd, but the last 15-20 years it seems like pretty much just pop/r&b. While r&b and hip hop are my favorites genres, I think they should start doing some other ones too. I do not enjoy country at all, but why not throw a country singer in there? Or go back to some rock.

SuperBowl half time shows are all very subjective and there isn't any reliable way to rate which ones are the best. Due to the high cost of those broadcasts, it seems whatever artists they choose try to jam as much into their show as possible and they often seem overly hectic. It seems in the past several years, if you weren't already familiar with those performing, the show wouldn't have meant very much to you or whatever 'message' they were trying to convey.

Half time at most football games aren't even shown and it is more a time for those 5+ panelists to explain what happened in the first half. I have no idea how they decide which genre or artist(s) are chosen each year. Perhaps some were offered but turned down the request for any number of reasons.

Super Bowl halftime performers aren’t paid.

I think it goes my popularity and hoping for high ratings and like a PP mentioned, bringing in the younger generation. Kendrick had an ongoing feud with Drake this year and the main diss track was performed at the Super Bowl. He has huge hits last year and won 5 Grammys too.

You really don't seem to understand how popular Kendrick is! He doesn't need to me more well-known. He's won many awards and has sold a lot of music. He's very talented. If rap isn't your thing (and I must say, it's not my favorite), that's fine. Don't watch. But based on the very high ratings for this year's SB halftime show, it's clearly popular with a large portion of the younger generation. I don't think Jeff Goldblum would get the same ratings!!

I just have to keep reminding myself to go wayyyy back to my teenaged years, and my parents complaining about the music I was playing way too loudly - music they hated and I loved at the time. Each generation has their own thing....... Rap is popular internationally and is a big part of the current music scene.

They should rotate halftime shows and national anthems. Maybe next year some rapper for the national anthem. Maybe Lynyrd skynard, kid rock or something for halftime, hey you know, keeping it DEI.

The last ten halftime headliner performers have been :

Katy Perry
Coldplay
Lady Gaga
Justin Timberlake
Maroon 5
Shakira/Jennifer Lopez
The Weeknd
Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg/Eminem
Rihanna
Usher
Kendrick

I think this is very diverse.

Super Bowl artists do not get paid what you think and most of the money comes out of their own pocket. From Sports Illustrated:

Do Super Bowl Halftime Performers Get Paid?

Surprisingly, not much.

Super Bowl halftime performers are paid the union-rate minimum. For Usher, that meant $671 for the actual performance last year and about $1,800 for the rehearsals leading up to the Super Bowl.

The NFL and Apple Music pick up the costs for the set, special effects and extras. There have been times where that cost ends up in the $15 million range. In 2021, The Weeknd spent more than $7 million of his own money (while unconfirmed, it has been reported that the extra money went toward elaborate stages).

I like the diversity of the artists and like a PP said if you don't like it then don't watch.

I don't think sponsors are going to be clamoring to foot the bill for Jeff Goldblum, or Billy Joel for that matter. The sponsors and the performers are looking to get something in return for their resources and/or efforts.

Honestly, I think people mostly watch the SuperBowl for the football game. If someone isn't into football, seems unlikely they would tune in just to watch the halftime show since you can't be sure at exactly what time it will start. Many who watch the game, probably use half-time as a chance to refresh their drinks or get some other snacks from the kitchen..................LOL. 'Ratings' for the half-time show seem more a reflection of how many are watching the game. Never really sure how they even measure that, your TV might be on but everyone could be out of the room doing something else.

I know plenty of people who only tune in for the halftime show. Especially when Dr. Dre headlined. It’s usually at superbowl parties but they mingle, talk, eat and ignore the game but come running in to watch the halftime show.
