Hi,

I am using Super Shuttle for the first time to get to and from the airport. I made the reservation over the phone and was asked if I wanted to pre-pay a tip or would I be paying cash. I elected to pay cash.

I was "advised" that the standard for gratuity is $30 each way. That is THIRTY PERCENT of my fare. We will have 1 golf bag and 4 regular bags for him to put in the SUV....30%, really?

So, I am here to ask (not if you tip or if you don't) if 30% really the industry standard for somebody helping you with 5 bags on top of the $100 you are paying each way?

If it is, can you please tell me what the $100 pays for if the driver does not see any of that? It would not cost more than $10 in gas if we drove ourselves in our most gas guzzling vehicle and the drive is only 35 - 40 minutes.

I always tip 20%. So if it's $20 one way, they get $4 each way. I believe their website suggests 18% and will figure it for you but I always round up to a whole $.

Your line of thinking is where mine is/was. I was not sure where the lady that booked us got $30 each way. It is $102 on the way there and $84 coming home (different airport).

Four bags is probably about $10. each way. Golf bag is another $5 or so

Sorry but if you travel with a lot of luggage you need to tip accordingly.

20% is the industry standard...that's what drivers have told me they expect when tipped. Now....if the driver merely drives the car, doesn't open his mouth to welcome me, or is just blah, then that 20% is getting cut back a bit. I once had a driver who didn't even help with the bags...he allowed my dh, dd, and I to schlep our bags from baggage claim across the street to his waiting car. Then he did grab one larger bag and put that in the trunk, while dh loaded the others...total of 3 plus 2 carryon bags. He neve said much other than welcome to Orlando. But, when we got to the resort, he hopped out, and grabbed all the bags, telling my dh that he 'had them'...not to worry. Yeah, he got about 10%. The return driver was much better and he got the full 20%.
A tip isn't automatic, otherwise it would be called 'pay'. THey get paid....do they depend on tips? Probably. But, if you depend on tips, then you may want to put yourself out there and be as pleasant as possible. I do NOT automatically tip 20%.
And 30%??? Not going to happen, not for any type service.

if your paying $100 each way your getting ripped. Take a cab, save money and tip what you want to.

I have to agree. Unless you are taking a true limo, then your cost should be a lot less. Car services are usually around $120ish r/t...not $100 one way.

My first thought was the driver is related to the person the OP spoke to on the phone.

How many passengers? 5 bags (including the golf bag) is more then one person usually takes. Two is probably normal. The "suggested" tip sounds like 15% + $5 for every bag over 2.

Two (or more) passengers? $20 should be more then enough. Probably enough for one but there are times where tip % doesn't work.
