My son wants a super mario birthday party. Which is fine. But I am trying to figure out cheap/free things to do for the party. There are favors you can purchase, but they will be so expensive for as many kids as we will have. I can be pretty crafty, but have no ideas. Anyone?

Maybe do an obstacle course, (try to get ideas from his favorite Mario games). Winner gets a ribbon, cheap toy or candy. If you do the race alot, the all time winner gets a trophy.

My DS loves Mario too, if I think of anything else I will let ya know, my mind is not working well at the moment (tired) LOL

I did a Mario party for my son last June and we gave out Mario and Luigi hats...I found cheap hats from Oriental in green and red, did iron on M's and L's and also found some cheap stick on mustaches for all the boys....everyone really like the hats as favors and I did have a few girls and we did Princess Peach crowns for them....also cheap from Oriental.

We did one of these parties last year.

We printed out 8 1/2 x 11" photos of the "major" characters, laminated them, and then the kids played a variation of Musical Chairs by walking around on the photos (music played was the game music). Played this several times! Kids loved it.

Prizes for the party games were the chocolate gold-foil wrapped coins, like the coins you see in the Mario games - HUGE hit!

A pop the koopa (balloon) game - similar to a game in SM?

There were other games, etc., but I can't remember them now. DS will remember though...

We did one for my DS last June, for favors you can use any small box and stamp the outside to look like bricks , then fill with gold chocolate coins, just like the ones in the game.

If you have mario kart game an 2 controlers you can have the kids do a mario kart tournament teams of 2 takes turns racing winners play winners till there only 1 player left

a friend of mine did printables of Mario and Luigi faces and then used them on top of lollipops for a favor at a party. I guess she just glued them onto the wrapper but it was cute. You could do an obstacle course that mimics MarioKart and for sure do some kind of jumping game, even if it is onto squares of construction paper across the floor to get to Princess Peach...have fun!

They have a section in Walmart with bags of inexpensive prizes to give out at parties--they are in a bunch of bins in the Birthday party decorations area. One of the things they have in there are packages of gold medals that you can hang around their neck--there were quite a few in a pack & nothing in that section is expensive.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the ideas, keep them coming! We rented a bounce house, so that is a huge budget buster, so want to keep everything else as cheap as possible!!! I like the game ideas, and the chocolate coins sound great. Have to find some of those! I am going to try to make a chain chomp pinata myself. Haven't done any paper mache in about 25 years, but we'll see how it goes!!

My son loves your idea of the chain chomp pinata - good luck!!!

The other games we did:
Pin the tail on the Koopa
Pop the P-balloons
Musical Marios (the game I mentioned before with stepping on the photos)
Hot Fireball (we have a Mario ball from McDonalds and the kids played Hot Potato with it - again to the game theme music)

Have fun!

we are having a mario party too --- the boys will play the mario games on the wii --- i went to dollar tree and got the generic wii steering wheels and wii baseball bats and then the boys can take them home with them. That is going to be the favors.

loved that blog! The easter eggs for the koopa was great. I'll have to hit the clearance after Easter. We are having our party the next week, so that is great! I found decorations online, but may try to make some instead. I'll see how the images print out.

We did a yoshi party last year. Since I couldn't find anything in the stores we found a place on ebay that makes edible personalized cake toppers, so you just buy a plain cake and when the day gets here you put the topper on and it looks great. Do an ebay search for "mario cake" there are lots of them.

We also have ordered lots of little mario figurines from Hong Kong, they take a while to get here but are pretty cheap :)

You could fill a CD with all his favorite video game music. Make a copy with a nice cover for all the kids.

My girls have a combined party because the birthdays are a week apart. This year they had almost 50 kids. We filled a disk with songs. it was about $40 with covers. We put it in a bag with some candy. It was less then $50.

I have a template for the cover if you are interested.

Thanks again for all the ideas. I made a chain chomp pinata, we played yoshi's egg hunt, and had a balloon pop to find princess Peach. The bounce house was Bowser's castle. I made one up cookies, and mushroom cupcakes. Served Bowser burgers, and goomba dogs. Kids had a blast! It was a lot of work, but well worth it. Also made the question mark boxes filled with gold chocolate coins. had coloring pages printed out for goodie bags. good times!
