Super Goofs Ringing in the New Year

I also think Suzanne would make a great captain. You have my vote too!

Lisa, thank you so much for being our captain last year. Your hard work was greatly appreciated by us! Take care and best of luck with your family's activities!

Suzanne I think it would be great if you want to be captain. Thanks for considering it.

Hope everyone else is motivated towards their own best fitness goals for the year. Still trying to figure out mine. Today I am going to run for the first time since the marathon. Just a short one.

Anyone have a race coming up soon?

Lisa, I know we haven't talked in months! :scared1: But I want you to know that I'll miss just knowing you're around--but understand your reasons. You'll be in my thoughts and I WISH you the best with these precious years with your kidlets.

Other Goofs--Love ya! But more business right now. It's certainly interfering with my social time. Harumph! :lmao:

It sounds like there's enough support to continue to the teams, in some form or another, this year. Lots of decisions to be made, though, so I'm hoping for some more input--specifically from team members:

For more, please see this post to the Teams 2010? thread, of which I've posted an excerpt here:

From what I understand, a (sort of) collective response to the teams seems to be

1) People appreciate the smaller, intimate teams, especially as WISH gets bigger, for team members of active threads, and new WISHers who want to get involved.
2) But people are concerned for about the effects of the teams on the WISH team as a whole, both terms of online activities (weekly/monthly thread, talking with other WISHers, getting more feedback outside one's team, the worries about emergent cliques & feelings of outsiderness) and at physical WISH meets.

It sounds as if the teams will continue in one form or another, whether as a challenge or more like a social thread (like the Bots, the Leaners, or any of the event-oriented threads like the Princess). They seem to serve a purpose for many people. But like others, I'd like to see the team aspect enable more interaction between all members of WISH. Best of both worlds.

Teams: To help facilitate this decision-making, I'd like all team members to take that extra step, go that extra mile (sorry, couldn't resist) to address concerns about the teams' effect. Talk amongst themselves, brainstorm, and have your representative make suggestions. Are you willing to be disbanded and reformed as a new group, starting new teams for an entirely new game with new teammates? If not a miles & minutes challenge, then what? People assigned to your roster or a join-at-will? What could you do to reach out to other WISHers? Etc.

Once teams have reached some sort of consensus, or a collection of ideas, could one person post them to this thread?

I'm for keeping the Goofs together, but not doing miles/minutes--or else only reporting them for the month. Even though I log my own, I was always forgetting to do the online spreadsheet and then having to convert from how I track mibe. But a monthly total would be okay if others really want to keep this aspect.

I do think we need a realistic "body count:, though. Not to put anyone on the psot--but to find out realistically who will/won't be staying--like Lisa did. That way we can ask for some new members.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming.....

My marathon recovery is taking a long time as evidenced by my short, crappy 2.5 mile run yesterday. Right leg is strained--not sure why. So no running for me for a while (I tend to do this a lot it seems!) It's not doctor-worthy. I think I'm just old!

Maura

I keep forgetting to update the spreadsheet too. (In fact, I think I need to go back and finish off December.) I am all for keeping the teams though.

The one thing that always bugged me (a small bit, admittedly) about the miles/minutes challenge was that racking up miles is actually really easy. If I cut my running down to a couple miles per day, but started biking again, logging 120 mile weeks would be pretty simple. (The time would be about the same, though.) Minutes always seemed to be a better metric - especially since some types of chores (gardening, IIRC) could count as minutes

Agreed, I will go back and try and find an old thread with our team listed and maybe send out a mass private message. Any other suggestions?

Hi Goofs! I will stick with the Goofs if the teams continue. although, I am not really for keeping the spreadsheet...it is hard enough for me to get here and read/post, logging on to a spreadsheet is too much for me.

Suzanne--thanks for offering to be captain...you have my vote.

Lisa--thanks for being our captain the last few years, you were great! i am sorry to see you go, but I will keep up with your escapades on facebook!

Ok..goofs...i will try to check more often now that things in my life are slowing down. i have two races coming up in the spring so i need to keep on track with my training!

Howdy Goofs!

I just ran a 10K this morning. I still feel a bit fatigued from the WDW Marathon but I managed to knock 3:00 off of last year's time in the same race. It was a tough and hilly but beautiful course through one of our local state parks.

We also had our running club's awards ceremonies at a local pizza place. I EASILY won my age division. It's hard not to lose when you are the only one competing! :rotfl2: I didn't feel too deserving as I'm the slowest winner in any bracket under 65-69 years old (I'm 36). Regardless, I'll gladly display my award in my little running shrine with my finisher medals.

I'm going through major Disney race withdrawals right now. I had such a great time at the WDW Marathon that nothing else I have lined up this year can compare unless I can somehow get to Disneyland to complete the coast to coast. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Tomorrow is a rest day so I'm trying to convince my wife that it also means rest from chores so I can lounge and watch the playoffs!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Thanks!!

Hey Goofs!

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing! Today is my last day of rest before starting up again with my training. My achilles tendon was very sore after the Goofy, so I decided to take a few weeks off to rest it, and it is feeling much better now! I have 2 half's on the schedule for the spring, so i will be starting my half training tomorrow afternoon. the goal for these races is to get faster!! I am hoping to break 2 hours in the half.....that is going to be tough, but I want to try!

Steve--great job in your 10k...and congrats on the age group award. Doesn't matter how fast you were compared to others, you got out there and did the races, so you deserve it!

Suzanne--thanks again for stepping up to be our captain! The team looks good! and i promise to do my best to get here more often!!

Hey Goofs! I'd like to stay on the team, if you'll have me. I might be the odd one out, but I didn't mind logging my miles/minutes in the spreadsheet. It gave me something to look back on when I forgot to log my miles in my hard copy running log. But I'm willing to do whatever the group decides. Suzanne, thanks for volunteering to lead us this time around!

Of course we want you to stay Kim!!

Hi Goofs,

Sorry to be gone for a few days. Between trying to finish painting my bedroom and trying to sort out the WISH teams and members, I was a little tied up. No new members for us right now since we had a couple of teams way down, but next request I will bring to us!

Steve Congrats on your 10k and your age group win. So what if you're slower than the rest--at least you're out there racing. And it's nice to get awards. I will admit that sometimes before signing up for a race, I look at past results and see where I would have placed. If I think I have a shot at placing, I'm more inclined to run it. (I know-bad, but I haven't done it often and it is incentive to get up and run !)

Mike Have you started your Steelhead training yet? Liz said she is soing this race and her DH, Patrick is looking to do it as a relay. I had thoughts about trying a half-IM this year, but have sort of put it on the back burner. Although yesterday, I went and bought a wetsuit! (Found a great deal at XTerra) So I better plan something.

Laurie Hope your half training goes well. Are you going to be doing some speedwork? I actually like that part--even if it is only for short distances!

Suzanne No princess weekend for me this year. Almost had plans to come down since my DS was going to be there for her birthday, but she's now unemployed and has decided not to do that trip.

I've been cross training lately--want to give myself til next week before I really run, althought the self-imposed break doesn't seem to be eliminating my various leg strains. Sigh--I think it's just old age.

Did everyone see the thread on goals for 2010? I'd love to hear what the Goofs have planned (Mike, you've already weighed in). I said that I wanted to:

Run healthy and strong all year (well....the rest ofthe year, anyhow)
Run a sub-2:00 half (Let's go Laurie!)
Maybe try and BQ in the fall
Learn to enjoy races and recognize that not every race is going to be a PR.

I think the last one will be hardest.

Maura

Maura, I will miss you for Princess weekend. I had fun last year cheering with you at Epcot!!

My goal for 2010, to start and finish the January 1/2 (done!!), to start and finish the Princess 1/2 and to start and finish the Wine and Dine 1/2. I am thinking about adding one more 1/2 to my calendar in November. I've decided to forgo most of the little $20-$40 races that I've done the past few years and put my money into the 1/2's.

There's a thread on the boards about who is not coming for marathon weekend 2011 whether it be personal choice, money choice or work/family choice. Anyone on the fence? One person basically said, been there, done that, no need to do it again...anyone else feel that way?
