Super Goofs Flying into February team thread

Just back from a 3 miler. I'm very happy cause I had a 10:08 pace! That is flying for me! :woohoo:

Morning Super Goofs!!

Shan/Steve - I'll have Patrick post on the Garmin thing. He sets his for interval and it does beep.

Mike - pretty darn good for so soon after surgery.

Big HELLOs to everyone - if  feel better soon, if well hope we stay that way.:thumbsup2

Got in 2 miles Saturday on a trail that is still partially snow/ice covered. I have got to get me a pair of trail runners.

Was supposed to get out for long miles yesterday. I've got to get more disciplined with my workouts. Did really well before the full, did ok when first back but right now every time I think about going out in the cold again it's no way. Think it's winter blahs big time. Have my gym bag packed today. On tap 50 min TM followed by weight routine. Tomorrow going to the Latin Fusion class I've been wanting to try. (I will go...I will go...) Problem is it starts about the time I'm done with cardio and moving on to weights/core. Guess I need to flip that on Tuesdays.

Keep up the great work everyone!

Hi gang !
Just wanted to drop by and start reporting miles this week.
Not sure how it is going to go, but I do need to get a little more serious about my training if I am going to keep up with our illustrious leader at the CMM.
Got an hour of TM on tap for this afternoon after work, in brand new shoes!!
Going to see if new sneaks make a difference to the "ball -of-foot" pain I have been having when doing longer distances.
Liz insists my old shoes are shot, sooo..
We shall see how the new ones fare tonite.

Happy miles, everyone !

Patrick

Hey Goofs, remember me? Sorry I've been MIA for so long. The IT band is still wreaking havoc, but I can usually run for 2-3 miles before it complains. Not sure if I should be doing my usual three 2-mile training runs each week as a result. :confused3 What do you guys think? Am I OK if I quit before it gets painful, or am I doing more harm than good by continuing to run? I did invest in The Stick and am stretching it, but I'm not fully recovered yet.

I have to check my records before I update the spreadsheet, but I have a 2-miler or 2 and a 5-miler to add to the books.

In other news, I want to report that I ran the BEST unplanned 2 miles yesterday. I was cheering for my Team in Training teammates who were running the half and full Mercedes Marathon. One of the guys I'd trained with since September started lagging behind at the end of the full. An earlier TNT cheer station called and told us to keep an eye out for him, so another cheerleader and I walked up the course to try and meet him. He later told us he was ready to quit at mile 24 due to his legs cramping up, but the paramedics and the "Balloon Lady" (our friendly neighborhood version of the sweeper bus) wouldn't let him give up. We caught up to him around 24.2 (give or take) miles. We ran with him and another struggling runner we'd never met before, and then picked up various people from TNT along the way who jumped in and ran with us. These included our Leukemia and Lymphoma staff person (who had run with us most Saturdays), one of our coaches and 2 of the women in our training group (who had all finished the half marathon earlier that day), the TNT walk coach, other TNT volunteers, and our teammate's wife. He later described it as "a sea of purple" coming toward him! We served as the two runners' personal pit crews, fetching water for them, cheering them on, and even grabbing hold of their arms and running with them as needed. It was so wonderful to see both of "our" runners make it to the finish! Crossing that finish line was just as remarkable as crossing the finish line when I ran the Disney half. I'd never played sports growing up, so this was my first real "team" experience and it was truly moving.

If you're interested, here are links to the photos taken by the Birmingham News. This one shows just how close the sweeper vehicles were! http://photos.al.com/birmingham-news/2009/02/mercedes_marathon_18.html I'm the one with her head turned to the side. The guy in red behind us was the other runner, who actually finished just a hair before my teammate.
This one shows my teammate being supported literally and figuratively by TNT. http://photos.al.com/birmingham-news/2009/02/mercedes_marathon_19.html
And finally, his moment of triumph! http://photos.al.com/birmingham-news/2009/02/mercedes_marathon_21.html

:goodvibes I love this sport!

So cool that you guys helped him finish! I plan on doing TnT for the WDW marathon in January. I'm trying to get myself to the point where I can run 3 miles without walking by the time their training starts. It wil be nice to join them here because the training alternates between Kelly Drive in Philly and Valley Forge park near my house.

I'm going to update the spread sheet with my numbers in a few minutes...

Sigh. Megan, I miss Kelly Drive SO much! We lived in Philly while DH attended the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (now part of Temple University) that's right by the Round House. I lived at the Presidential for 9 months or so and it was awesome to walk, bike and rollerblade down by Kelly Drive.

I think you'll be in great shape for TNT by the time you're up to 3 miles without a walk break. Our chapter offered groups for advanced runners, walkers and then beginning runner folk (like me). They wanted our group to be able to run for at least 2 miles without a walk break and we eventually worked our way up to 4 later in our training schedules, but our long runs were all at 5:2 and then 5:1 run/walk ratios. YMMV as each team, coach, and chapter seem to have a slightly different programs, but I'm sure you'll be in terrific shape at the start of your training season!

Good morning Goofs! I think I am finally over my yucky yuck and back on the road again!!

Kim, those photos gave me goose bumps. How awesome of all of you to help him reach his goal!!

Patrick, nice to see ya buddy. Oh and what Patrick is not telling you all is that he is WALKING keeping up with me running. :lmao: Darned long legs. Why wasn't I born with those???? I am slowing my runs down a bit and I am pretty sure I can hold a 12 mpm pace, now as far as holding it for 26.2....:rolleyes1

Liz, how goes the training? Latin fusion sounds like fun!!! Make sure we get the full report....(see now you have to go....).

Megan, you will get there with the 3 miles. Heck, some days I can't even go 3 miles without walking...:upsidedow

Vicki, sorry about the computer thing. Sounds time consuming and very frustrating. Glad I am only the one inputing things and not having to fix them!

Mike, nice job on the slow and easy run. See I knew you could do it!! I know you will be back to (semi) normal soon!!! :goodvibes

Shan, :woohoo: :woohoo: Nice pace!!!

Everyone else, good morning, good morning, good morning to you!!!! :dance3:

As for me, I got out for 3 miles yesterday. I am concentrating on slowing down a little and pacing myself better for the marathon. I had intended to do my 9 miles but that got a little side tracked by swim practice so I decided to do the long run on Wednesday instead (being my usual rest day). I maintained an 11:57 the first mile, a 12:06 the second mile and then a 10:06 for the last mile. Sorry Patrick, it's mostly downhill. What is a girl to do???? Anyway, today is 5-6 miles and I have to take the girls to the gym after work. I may do some at the gym and then run the rest after I get home. It is nice here for now, low 30s but sunny and bright. The roads are clear and just being out in the fresh air is great!! Wish me luck!

Have a Super Goofy day everyone!!! :flower3:

Shan Great pace for your run! Something about getting close to 10 mpm that was a real motivator for me.

Liz Phew! I get tired just reading about your workouts. The Latin Fusion thing sounds fun--as long as they do it in a room with dark curtains so no one can see how goofy (pun intended) I look while doing it. My DD would cringe and DS would disown me!

Kim You beat me over to the Triple D's board I see--I just went there to post and say hi to Bryan. Anyway, about the ITB. Having suffered through 2 bouts of it so far, gone to the doctors a few times and tried PT, I tend to try and give mine rest. Like go a week without running (other XT okay). I do know that on one of my trips to the doctor, I asked him flat out--what damage would i do if I kept runnning. He said--no damage (to knees or anything), just pain. My reason for ITB occurring has to do with my "weak hip"--yours may be for a different reason, so I am diligent about doing strenghtening exercises and also stretching. Stretching alone didn't seem to do it for me. Hope you find the root cause of yours and the exercises to correct. Don't worry if you do take some running time off--you won't "lose it all".

As for me..let's just say that I had a crappy work day yesterday and today visualized "running far away from work as I could". This helped me get through speedwork quite well! :rotfl: 4.6 miles for me in 40 minutes. I'm delinquent in updating the spreadsheet--should get to it soon.

ksoehrlien: My brother also attended Philadelphia School of Podiatric Medicine! (before it was Temple) Small world, huh? (my dsil also went there, and was a year behind my brother)

I got my 8 miler in on Sunday.....will try to do 10 next weekend, but boy it's hard to get the miles in at home!

Beth

Morning Team!

Kim - how very cool that you guys did that!

Maura - Reading Lisa's workouts exhaust me! I plan on moving to the far side of the classroom away from the glass wall. Patrick will be at home and DS works out in the middle of the night so no worries about family being able to make fun of me after. :lmao: Oh and I've been watching the continued mess the auto industry is making - hang in there! You need a WDW break in a couple weeks - think a few of us will be there. ;)

Last night got in 3 miles on TM then 45 min of weights/core. Believe my arms should either fall off or merely cease functioning later today. If my spelling goes to heck you'll know why.

Have a great day everyone!

Hi Everyone!

I sat in the sauna after my run this morning trying to get warmed up. I was cold down to my bones. I couldn't even fathom getting in a shower I was so cold. People in the sauna said just looking at me made them cold - now thats a "You know you are cold when" moment!

Kim - GREAT pictures! I love TNT for just that - they won't leave anyone behind.

Mike - I am glad to hear you are walking - how does the knee feel? Or is it too soon to tell?

Shan - you are getting speedy!

Cecilia

Hi Goofs...still here, still sick.

I just signed up for the Princess 5K on March 7th before it sells out, it was at 95% full this morning. Anyone else here for Princess weekend?

yay for more people joining the Princess weekend events! I updated my numbers on the spreadsheet earlier.

My doctor gave me greater incentive to exercise more (as if a trip to Disney isn't enough). My blood pressure was high today when I was visiting THAT doctor. I have to go see my regular doctor on Thursday. My blood pressure always fluctuates, so it will probably be okay on Thursday, but it is really upsetting to me. Well, I am going to really watch my salt intake from now on (along with all the other things that I am supposed to do).

Going to the orthopod for my 8 day checkup.

Please help me hope that I am cleared for training...I'm going CRAZY with inactivity!

Mike

Good luck Mike.......but promise to follow what the doctor says! (that's just the mom in me) I know how frustrating it is not to be able to work out......but remember the greater good! My fingers are crossed, let us know what happens!

Beth

Got in my last run today before my surgery. Ran 3 miles, pace was 10:27. DH put Tommy the broadway musical on my ipod for me and I ran to that this morning. (I know, weird music selection! :lmao: ) It was raining a little, but I wanted to get in this run. I'll check back in next week when I'm able. Hope everyone has a nice weekend! :grouphug:
