During our drive to Disney in June I noticed there was a Sunpass device the vending machines in the rest stops. There were no instructions or information posted and the welcome center was closed so I could not ask them. Anyway, can someone tell me how this works? Looks like it could save us some drive time.

Thanks

It used to be super-simple, but SunPass is in the throes of switching their computer system to an outside vendor and it's been a nightmare so far. The system itself works great, but the vendor is apparently having great difficulty...and not just in Florida.

The instructions are included in the packaging. Basically you set up your account, link a credit card for automatic replenishment, set a replenishment amount, and enter your car info (make, model, tag, etc.) Then you just drive through the SunPass lanes and skip the toll booths. SunPass tolls are somewhat less than the regular tolls, and if the SunPass reader doesn't work, you get billed by your license plate at the discounted SunPass rates.

If you are just using it for a Florida vacation, I would set the replenishment amount at the minimum $10 so you don't end up with a bunch of money on the account and have to work out a refund.

There are two SunPasses. One is a disposable sticker which costs $5; the other is a portable unit which costs $20. The portable unit could be used with the SunPass app for your phone, but I don't know if that will be the case with the new system. We used the stickers for years without problems.

try search ... this gets discussed in depth at least once a month

go to https://www.sunpass.com/en/home/index.shtml

you can order it and have mailed to you ... then set it up b4 you leave on your trip

I recommend the portable version. It costs more but supports moving from vehicle to vehicle and having it associated with more than one vehicle. The less expensive sticker is intended for use on ONE vehicle and is 'stuck' to the windshield. Removing it destroys it .... I've been using my portable for over ten years and even loan it to visitors with no complications ....

For a trip to Orlando from the north on I-75, does anyone know what the SunPass tolls would be? I'd like o replenish my account but not have too much on there.

There is a toll estimator on the Sunpass website Capt_BJ gave above.

The website is confusing for someone not familiar with the area, but I think its around $4.30 each way with a Sun pass.

I bought one that sticks on your window at the Florida Welcome Center on a previous trip and will load toll money on there.

Thanks!

I picked up an e-pass last year at a toll booth. Somehow the conversation with the attendant led to me telling her that I had a Maryland EZ Pass at home. She advised me that the $20 transponder fee was waived for EZ Pass holders and I only had to load toll money on the device.
Lesson: buy in person and check if you need to pay or if it is free for you.
