Hey all , just a quick question about towing an RV on route 417 (to bypass route 4) and Sunpass .
We have the portable Sunpass and it works great for 417 . Never towed the RV on 417 though .
First , I am assuming you CAN tow an RV on 417 correct ?
What vehicle and "plate" gets registered with the Sunpass ? The Tow rig, or the trailer ? Does it automatically charge the correct amount for multiple axles ?
Just trying to avoid route 4 in a few weeks on route to FW .

Thanks !

I have an E-Pass and come down 429. It charges all the axles when towing. The pass is tied to the plate on the tow vehicle.

Uh, I've towed on 417 and never thought to ask if I could/should. It's pretty empty most times I've been on it.

The vehicle and plate are registered with Sunpass but there is a checkbox to designate a plate as a trailer plate. So my Sunpass profile shows one transponder and two plates (one for the vehicle and one for the trailer).

Does it automatically charge the correct amount for multiple axles? Not always (personal experience). I've gotten over-charged by an axle a few times - do I care though? Not in the least - I keep moving through the toll booths at speed on 417 and slower through the booths on the upper Turnpike (although I hear those are/will go away).

I come down I75 and the Turnpike to WDW but did divert to Jacksonville once and in on I4 to Orlando towing (although not to Disney) and I swore never again. Construction on the north part of O meant temporary painted lanes 6 wide zigging and zagging across the pavement. I needed a stiff drink once I got to my destination and swore I would never do that again and felt sorry for those folks coming down I95 to I4. Going on down I95 to 528 and 417 and getting off at the Disney exit (which is Hwy 536) and just staying straight and riding onto property as it becomes Epcot Drive is SO much easier and adds only 15 minutes maybe. Well worth it IMO.

I know 528 comes in on the north side of the airport and hooks into I4 and is more direct but traffic on I4 is heavy nearly all times of the day. So I always divert around on 417.

PS - I like to camp near Port Canaveral and come in to Disney sometimes on 528/417 for the parks or dinner at Disney Springs and NEVER touch I4. :sad2:

I take 417 all the time to bypass Orlando.
Normally we are in our class A pulling a Tahoe. It counts axles, we have a tag so three axles on the coach and two additional on the toad. Total of 5.
So far it counts everything and charges accordingly.
I've used the portable Sun pass up until recently. Now I have the stick on in the coach. Hope I remember to take the portable out of the Tahoe so I don't get charged twice!
I don't think it cares which vehicle it's on as long as they're associated with a Sunpass.
Did that take care of everything, or did I miss something?
PS: Wow! I must really type slow! By the time I hit post Ed and Jim had both jumped in.

Yea, we usually jump off 95 and on 417 up in Sanford . Then its straight on to WDW without even touching route 4 in Orlando . Its a much less stressful / easier drive . It may actually be faster as well, because ........when is there NOT traffic on route 4 ? Plus all that construction !

I was able to add a "trailer" plate to my Sunpass account , and surprisingly it even listed most RV manufacturers to choose from (ours was on the list) . Just was not exactly sure if I should keep both the truck and RV plate "active" . Dont want to get double charged .......... but actually , I guess since its a double axe trailer , I WILL be getting double charged (or more) :rotfl2:.

That works too, of course.

Just did the toll calculator , and just like I thought ..........somehow its about $2. MORE than double the price for 4 axles vs 2 !:rotfl:

We go down from Jacksonville/Fleming Island. I never take I-4. Never. I'll go the 'back route', which takes just as long, but less traffic. I feel safer driving fast on those little 2 lane roads than I do driving slow on I4.

From my place, down US 17S through Green Cove Springs; skirt Palatka on FL 19 S; through Caravelle Ranch Wildlife Management Area. bop thru Altoona, down thru Lake Norris Conservation Area, (bunch of little turns after Altoona), which puts us on 429S thru Winter Garden/Ocoee. I'm not sure how well a big camper would fair on those little roads after Altoona, but there's always the option to stay on 19 through Eustis, and pick up 441 to 414/429.

Thanks for the reply . I know that area pretty well (Georgetown , Welaka , Lake George) . I Think that route may a bit more out of the way than I need to be going (imho) . Kind of a slow drive as well . I think that jumping on 417 in Sanford then straight to WDW , should take me away from most of the route 4 traffic issues . The 95 stretch in Northern FLA , shouldn't be too bad by next weekend as Bike week should be all but wrapped up by then .

I drove the I95 stretch from Jville to Cape Canaveral today and the stretch to I4 wasnt crowded because of bikes (altho we saw plenty).

At the I4 split 75% went towards Orlando and 25% down I95. But i was SB and the NB traffic the heavier of the two FWIW. Folks going home?

Ps - anything to avoid i4 thru downtown Orlando is a win tho.

Yea, Bike week should be wrapping up this weekend, with stragglers leaving though-out the week.
Did you see any signs for the NEW Buc-ee's off exit 323 on 95 ?
