Sunpass and rental vehicles

This may have already been posted, but thought I'd mention it again.

Was in south Florida a couple weeks ago and rented a car through Economy. Not sure whether this is unique to Economy but I was not able to add the Economy rental vehicle to my Sunpass because the vehicle was already registered to another Sunpass account. Called Sunpass and spoke to a rep and they reiterated that the rental vehicle was already registered to another Sunpass account and the only way to switch it to my Sunpass account was to ask Economy to release it on their end. Well I didn't bother to call Economy because I could imagine what their answer would be.

Other than that, my Economy rental went smoothly. Is this unique to Economy or is this widespread across the other car rental companies?

Did you try using your Sunpass anyway or did the rental company bill you for extra free money for using automation? (yes editorial opinion expressed here)

Since I could not add the rental vehicle to my Sunpass account, I did not use my Sunpass. I did not want to chance being hit with all sorts of fees from Economy. Instead, I just reconfigured my maps app to avoid toll roads for the duration of my trip. A little bit of a pain driving around south Florida, but managable.

Im wondering whether this is a recent change to force renters to opt into the rental car company's toll program, or whether this is just unique to Economy.

Was Economy an on-airport or off-airport rental? If the visitor sunpass program resumes it is supposed to apply to all on-airport companies. I would think the same process would apply to those of us who own our own Sunpass transponders.

We use our Sunpass all the time in rental vehicles - both on airport and off airport. However, we typically use one of the following agencies: Alamo, National, Enterprise, Avis, Budget and Dollar.

In the past, I was always able to add rental cars to my Sunpass account without any problems. This was my first time using Economy, which is an offsite car rental company. Perhaps that is the reason.

I can't find anything online that indicates how Economy handles tolls in Florida.

It's possible that a previous renter added that vehicle to their SunPass account incorrectly by failing to click the rental car check box and entering the end date of the rental.
